A huge well done to all the performers who took part in our Spring Concerts this past week. Both nights were a huge success and we were delighted to welcome audiences to experience live music once again in City Halls.

UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK is the biggest, most ambitious creative programme ever presented on these shores. Dandelion will be enabling over 100,000 school children across Scotland to become ‘citizen scientists’, providing more than 100 specially-developed Grow Cubes to allow young people to learn all about the joys and challenges of growing in the country’s largest ever community-led growing experiment.

Please note that both concerts are public events and that GES CREATE have no control over the sale/distribution of tickets. Tickets for both evenings will be sold on a first come first served basis. Previous concerts have sold out in a matter of days so please ensure you purchase your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Both concerts will start at 1930 and run without an interval, finishing around 2050

All participants are asked to wear all black for concerts: long black trousers or long black skirt, long sleeved black collared shirt, black shoes (no trainers) and black socks or black tights.

Thanks to all who participated in our recent Guitar Play Day. What a great turn out we had. Enjoy some of the performances below that were captured on the day.
Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Covid 19 situation we were once again unable to present our School Concert Programme in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
I’m pleased to announce that we have videoed 5 school concerts and they will soon be available to watch on the Glasgow Life YouTube channel. These concerts feature some of the fantastic artists appearing at the Celtic Connections Festival in January. Links for each concert are included below.
I hope that you and your pupils enjoy these concerts. They will all go online at 09:00 on Monday 21st February and they will remain online until 17:00 on Friday 4th March.
Any feedback would be gratefully received. Hopefully we will be back live at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in 2023.

Talisk
One of Scotland’s most popular folk-based groups to emerge in the last decade, chart-toppers Talisk have toured the world stacking up major awards for their explosively energetic, yet artfully woven sound, including Folk Band of the Year at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award and the Belhaven Bursary for Innovation.
Siobhan Miller & Innes White
A richly celebrated Scottish folk singer and songwriter, Siobhan Miller’s soulful and stirring renewal of traditional song has won her the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Traditional Track, and the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards’ Scots Singer of the Year an unprecedented four times.
Innes White is one of the most sought-after multi-instrumentalists in the UK, frequently collaborating with artists such as John McCusker, Karen Mathieson, Eddi Reader and, of course, Siobhan Miller.
Ímar
The members of Ímar first met as teenagers through the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann tutoring programme. They reunited in Glasgow and formed the band in 2016, naming it after the Viking warlord Ímar. The profile of the band rose quickly, bolstered by their individual reputations as members of several prominent ensembles. In 2018 the band won the Horizon Award for Best Emerging Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Anahata is a meeting of four musicians already well known to Scottish audiences. Paul Towndrow’s alto sax finds partnership with Fraser Fifield’s distinct whistle/bagpipe/soprano sax combo while Graeme Stephen and Hardeep Deerhe complete the quartet with guitar and tabla. Gnoss
Gnoss’ signature sound is a rich tapestry of acoustic layers; outstanding musicianship, deep traditional roots and contemporary compositional flair combine to create songs and tunes brimming with character.
Double ‘Scots Trad Award’ nominees, the boys have built an invested following through their forward-thinking take on traditional music and the unique warmth of their live shows.
The Benedetti Foundation is delighted to be working in partnership with Glasgow CREATE Instrumental Music Service to bring our ‘Music Service Sessions’ to the city on Sunday 27 February in City Halls.
Young string players (violin, viola, cello, double bass), from P3-S2, and working from approximately Grade 1 to Grade 3 level, are invited to join us for a day of making music together. Please note no exams need to have been taken and these grades are given as a guideline.
This day has been designed for you. We want you to absorb as much as possible, leave any nerves or worries at the door and be relaxed, yet focused. Intense, yet calm. Our sole intention is to inspire you. In order for us all to gain the most from the workshop, we will require a level of commitment from you as we work towards the sessions. Regardless of your level, we want to help each and every one of you to remember that to be good at something, and therefore experience more enjoyment, it takes consistent and intelligent work. It doesn’t happen on its own.
By signing up to this workshop, you are also signing up for preparation. It doesn’t have to take long, but consistency is key. We have put together a tutorial video and a play along track to help you all with your practice. These will be shared with all those who are registered from the start of February. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis & more details will be shared once you have received confirmation of a place.
On the day, we will be working with an amazing team of tutors: Rachel Cooper and Joelle Broad (violins), Ruth Nelson (viola) Simone Seales (Cello) and Stewart Wilson (Double Bass). Click on their names to read more about them.

The CREATE FESTIVAL of MUSIC offers a fantastic opportunity for choirs and bands, from both Primary and Secondary schools, to perform in City Halls and receive feedback from peers and adjudicators.
Schools can apply below with spaces allocated on a first come first served basis. Applications close on Friday 25th February.
Your school band/ orchestra/ ensemble/choir are invited to take part in the CREATE FESTIVAL of MUSIC in City Halls, Education Services Centre for Music Training & Performance – City Halls, 87 – 101 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1LH, on Saturday 23rd April 2022 – Secondary Schools and Saturday 7thMay Primary Schools from 0930-1300
This is a non-competitive festival, which will feature groups of varying genres and styles and give young people the opportunity to perform in one of the countries iconic concert venues as well as listen to peers from schools across the city – each performance will be given a constructive critique.
Timps, drum kit and any other reasonable request for percussion and amps will be provided.
Places are limited and applications will be taken on a first come first served basis, if you have more than one group from your school that would like to perform please indicate on the return, but please remember it may not be possible to accommodate this.
Confirmation of places will be emailed on Friday 10th March 2022
You should arrive at least 15 minutes before you session is due to begin. Please enter City Halls (276 8440) via the Stage Door on Albion Street. Everyone attending should bring with them appropriate refreshments for a morning break. The session should finish at approximately 13.00.
On arrival you will be directed to your allocated space in the Grand Hall – there will be space for instruments to be opened in the row in front and left ready for your performance. There will be a 5 minute warm up time on stage for each group, 6 minute performance time and then time to leave stage and re seat in the auditorium to listen to the next performance
There is no charge for this event – schools/ parents will be responsible for transport arrangements, costs and permissions.

We are delighted to announce details of Glasgow Schools’ Symphony Orchestra 2022 schedule. GSSO provides a unique opportunity for Young People from across Glasgow schools to experience professional orchestral training, repertoire and performance delivered by our team of highly talented staff.

Closing date for applications is 15th December 2021
AUDITIONS will take place week beginning 10th January 2022 in City Halls, you will be informed of audition times by email once your application has been received.
Please be prepared to perform a short piece of roughly grade four or above at your audition, you will also be given a short piece of sight reading. Following your auditions places will be confirmed by email. Your instrumental instructor will be able to help you prepare and answer any further questions you have.

Course fees
This year’s course fees will be as follows : £280; if your child is in receipt of a Clothing Grant and/or free school meals, there will be a reduced fee of £93. Please note, these fees are for GSSO only and we are pleased to tell you that due to Scottish Government Funding, there will no longer be an annual charge for our extra-curricular city groups.
