English and Literacy

Welcome to the English Department!

Proficiency in English is central to every pupil’s ability to access and develop in all areas of the curriculum. In the English department at Eastwood we aims to help pupils develop their oral and written expression so that they are confident and creative in their use of language and are able to clearly and fluently express ideas and opinions. Pupils are given the opportunity to fully engage with the broadest possible range of literature in order to stimulate their imagination and to give them the requisite critical skills.

The study of literature and media texts helps pupils to envisage and encounter a wider view of life, allowing them to discuss, think about and challenge their own values, beliefs and society. To that end pupils are given the opportunity to read a wide range of poetry, prose and drama as well as media and non- fiction texts which will allow them to develop their own perceptions and opinions.
As a department we endeavour to provide stimulating resources within the classroom; work closely with colleagues across the school to encourage literacy across the curriculum and also offer a range of extra- curricular opportunities for pupils. We place an emphasis on the importance of independent learning and personal reading which is central to the broader curriculum.
