Science Week

This week, we have been confident individuals by exploring lots of different areas of science.

On Tuesday, we welcomed visitors to our school and took part in lots of activities. we particularly enjoyed exploring stars and planets in the planetarium, and creating out own stomp rockets before competing to see who’s would travel the furthest.

We have also been taking part in experiments within the class and created our own hypothesis by discussing what we thought might happen after each experiment. We were responsible citizens by taking turns with peers.

FAOL: Science – Cornflour Slime

*Successful Learners*     *Confident Individuals*

The Moonbeams have had a fantastic science week this week. They have participated in lots of lessons and activities.

The pupils enjoyed working with a partner to make cornflour slime. The children worked together to identify and explore their ingredients before mixing them together. All pupils enjoyed pouring, mixing and touching the ingredients before exploring the slime and some  recognised the change in textures when mixed together.

Science Week – Fireworks in a Glass

* SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS, EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS *

The Bluebells class enjoyed today’s science experiment where we created fireworks in a jar. We added food colouring to some oil, gave it a really good stir and added the mixture to a glass of hot water.

We waited and watched and noticed some fireworks appearing in our jar!

More Successful Science Experiments

We had more successful learners taking part in more science experiments. We turned a raw egg into a bouncy egg with no shell using vinegar. Everyone had great concentration and anticipation on where the experiment would work. Everyone focused their attention when waiting on the egg being bounced. It bounced quite a few times before going, splat!

We also made rainbow paper using water and clear nail varnish, everyone actively participated and took their turn at giving their black card a rainbow pattern.

We also took part in a coloured pen experiment, we chose our colours and used some water to separate the colours. Everyone enjoyed looking at the original colour separate and move up the paper.

Successful learners during Science week

This week has been full of lots of different science activities and experiments. On Tuesday we had a day of science. The people from the dark sky observatory came with an inflatable planetarium. We all went inside to view the stars and the planets. We experience some science activities with students from Grange. We got to explore robots and made our own circuits with the ladies from Dumfries House. We also enjoyed exploring the stomp rockets.

We also conducted some science experiments in the classroom. We all really enjoy water play to we investigated floating and sinking. The children were confident individuals in placing the items in the water and then had some capacity fun filling and emptying different containers.

Successful Learners during Science Week (part 1)

Our first experiment – making a dancing man with a white board pen and water.

Exciting times as we all focussed on a webcast where engineers spoke about developing Patrick’s Fair-ground garden design into reality. We learned a lot about having to make small changes to make it possible.

The Transition boys had a great morning actively engaging with robots! The boys showed great manners and listened well to instructions so they could confidently use remote control cameras, wind turbines and a trebuchet to name a few!

The class then took part in an exercise looking a design inspired by nature and had a chance to experience using a microscope.

The class also took part in a very colourful experiment. Each boy made a prediction about the number of colours in each ink. The boys then completed a chromatography experiment to separate the colours. We discovered that most inks in our pens contain a mix of colours.

In the afternoon the boys experienced the planetarium where we learned about the next steps in moon exploration.

On the way back to class the boys had time to explore and investigate the movement of Slinkys.

Once back in class the boys took part in a moon quiz where they scored 8/9.

Science Week – Making Slime!

* SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS, EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS, CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS *

Today’s science experiment involved us working together to make slime. We used blue food colouring to turn the slime a lovely blue colour and all participated in the mixing of the ingredients.

We enjoyed exploring our slime by stretching, rolling and squeezing it!

Effective Contributing to a Rights Respecting Schools Wall Display!

* EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS *

The Bluebells class actively participated in a whole school wall display. They used their finger print to decorate a small outline of a person. Each pupil in the school is contributing to this lovely display for our atrium.

Bluebells: Science Meets Art

Successful Learners & Effective Contributors!

The Bluebells are going to be creating a new wall display for their classroom. The theme for this is ‘The Jungle Book’.

Today the boys and girls tried their hand at marble inking.

What we used:
– A large tray with deep sides filled with cold water
– Marbling inks
– White A3 paper
– A spoon

The ink is carefully dropped onto the water where it floats because it contains oil. A spoon is used to swirl the ink before paper is placed on top. When the paper is lifted an interesting marble pattern is left.

Super creative!
