Bookends prize Taynuilt Highland Games 2024
The Bookends prize will be awarded for the first time at the 2024 Games.
This commemorative medal was designed by the P7 pupils of the school and will be awarded to past pupils of Taynuilt Primary for significant contributions to the village or The Games.
The ‘Bookends’ are two teachers – one in the here and now, and one who came to Taynuilt more than 100 years ago.
Berni McMillan, Head Teacher of Taynuilt School is ‘now’, and Angus Murray, also Head Teacher of Taynuilt School, is ‘then’ – from 1921 to 1939.
They are joining together (through Angus’s granddaughter who is jointly sponsoring the prize with Berni) to support the music and sporting traditions shared by the school and the village.
Mr Murray was born on the Island of Lewis and was one of the very first from the remoter parts of the island to go to University and to become a teacher. He was a native Gaelic speaker, committed to the language and to the countryside, its names and traditions, as well a teacher who relished and sustained as wide a curriculum as possible in his school. He fished the Awe (recording the names, in English and Gaelic, of all its fishing pools), chaired the Hall Committee, walked the hills and was Gaelic tutor to the Taynuilt Gaelic Choir as well as an indefatigable organiser of the annual school sports.

Cheerio and thank you to Mrs Boyd and our Janny
After school the whole community gathered to say a fond farewell and express our gratitude to Mrs Boyd and Peter our Nanny as they retired.
Following a cuppa and some time together in the school hall Our Piper Ali led us all across to the church for a cheery carol service. The parents and children made a presentation to Mrs Boyd and Mr MacLennan to thank them for their years of service to the community.

End of term ceilidh with Gracie’s dad
On the last afternoon of term the whole school joined together to have a boogie. Gracie’s dad Gary brought his accordion along and played for us. This was the last part of Mrs Boyd’s last day so it was an extra special super duper send off.
We wrote recipes for a happy retirement
Staff and pupils wrote recipes for a happy retirement for Mrs Boyd. We hope she tries some of them in her new air fryer. P6 made chef’s hats and everyone who submitted a recipe got their photo taken wearing one. It was great fun trying to complete the task and take all the photos while keeping it Top Secret from Mrs Boyd who kept popping up when we least expected it. A real Team Taynuilt effort and a great result.
Our ELC staff visited Appletree Nursery on Bute
The ladies from the ELC spent the INSERVICE day chatting to the staff in their day nursery at Appletree in Rothesay about their practice. They came away with many ideas about things that they would like to try in our ELC.
It’s great to see what other people who are working in a similar area are doing. We are very grateful to them for their openness and support.
