National Guidelines

Several national documents and approaches exist to support staff in ensuring that your child receives high quality early learning and childcare. These include:

  • the national practice guidance for the early years is called Realising the Ambition: Being Me
  • from age 3 until early primary school your child will be working at the early level of Curriculum for Excellence.   The Early level was designed to ensure a joined-up approach across ELC and into primary school. National practice guidance,  provides advice and support for practitioners to ensure that your child receives the highest quality of experiences and the most appropriate approaches to teaching and learning. It emphasises the importance of play from the beginning of ELC, across the whole of the Early level and beyond.
  • In Scotland, the term early years is used to describe the period from pre-birth to 8 years old. The Early Years Framework explains that this broad definition of early years recognises the importance of pregnancy in influencing outcomes and that the transition into primary school is a critical period in children’s lives.
