Animals in the nursery

Animals in the Nursery Policy

Staff involvement
This policy was drawn up in the consultation with the Head Teacher of Taynuilt Primary School and the staff of Taynuilt Pre 5 Unit.

Animals, birds and fish may carry infections, which can be transmitted to humans. Strict hygiene procedures are therefore required when handling and caring for animals, to prevent illness. There may be opportunities for animals and their owners to visit the nursery.

Points to consider in relation to animals in the nursery:

  • Parents/carers will be informed before an animal visits the nursery to establish if a child has an allergy pr phobia to a particular animal.
  • Staff will risk assess the activity/visit.
  • It is recommended that children are only allowed to handle animals under the strict supervision of the staff.
  • Warn children not to put their hands in or near their mouths.
  • Children must wash their hands thoroughly before after coming into contact with any animals.
  • If animals come into contact with floors and surfaces, ensure that these are cleaned immediately afterwards.
  • Carefully wash any bites or scratches, if in any doubt seek medical advice.
  • Do not allow children to kiss animals.

Monitoring and Review
It is the responsibility of the Head Teacher along with the Pre 5 staff to monitor, evaluate and review the above arrangements and effectiveness of this policy and adjust them according to need.
