Last week saw the whole school and Pre-5 unit get involved in Health Week here at St. Joseph’s. Fantastic Physical Health activities were delivered, particularly in conjunction with Active Schools.

SANDBANK PUPILS HELP TO ‘SEND MY FRIEND TO SCHOOL’
The pupils of Sandbank Primary School and the Early Learning and Childcare Unit are very aware of how lucky they are to have access to a safe and stable school environment where they can learn and have fun together with their friends. They, along with their teachers, know that this is unfortunately not the case for all children around the world and the school regularly has participated in the “Send My Friend to School Project”

Bowmore Goes Gaelic!
On Thursday 28th April, we hosted a Gaelic Open Afternoon to share our learning with our families and friends! Each class’s IDL had a Gaelic theme – whether it was historical or cultural!
Gaelic songs were sung, Gaelic stories were told. Lots of lovely art work illustrated the stories children had been learning about! The Gaelic tradition of the belief in the fairy world was explored – there was even a glittery fairy garden in the grounds of BPS! Many children are going home to create their own.

Miniature Creations at Strone Primary School
Strone Primary School pupils were delighted to work alongside Blairmore Village Trust to create 30 miniature gardens of wild flowers. The children worked really hard, asked many questions, and took great pleasure in planting up the miniature gardens. The wild flower seeds were supplied by “Your Scotland”; Morrison’s supplied us with their surplus polystyrene fish boxes which we recycled for planting; BVT supplied the compost and the children did the rest.

Allan’s Road Safety Magic Show
Pupils from Argyll and Bute’s Cardross Primary School had a ‘magical’ start to their week when they had a visit from Allan’s Road Safety Magic Show.
The innovative show uses magic tricks to highlight key road safety themes including safe places to cross, the importance of wearing bright clothing and keeping away from parked cars.
International Education at St. Joseph’s!
St. Joseph’s was delighted to host an information afternoon for some Dutch teaching colleagues this week. A total of nine colleagues from Holland joined us to find out a bit more about the Scottish Education System. We had been approached by Strathclyde University as the Dutch teachers were their visitors and were in Scotland to look at Science and Technology in particular. Having previously been involved with Strathclyde University in developing their VIP approach to Science (for which they won an award), we were happy to help.

Rothesay Primary School Eco Day
Rothesay Primary School held their first ever Eco day on Monday 9th May. It was a huge success. The Eco committee worked with teachers to organise lots of different activities and all 255 pupils took part. Some of the favourite things were making (and eating) fruit kebabs, making bird feeders, parachute games, Eco art, making Earth mobiles, and singing Eco songs. We also picked up every scrap of litter from the playground. The whole school learned about the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainability, too. Continue reading Rothesay Primary School Eco Day
Transition Time at Colgrain
It’s been a very busy few weeks for the Pre-5 boys and girls who will be coming to Primary 1 in Colgrain! All boys and girls have had the opportunity to come to school and see the classrooms while taking part in lots of exciting activities. We have explored the outdoor environment during our Free Flow sessions, and even planted some of our own vegetables! We have enjoyed meeting ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ and his animal companions.
Swimming with Dolphins and other Mammals at Salen PS
The children and staff had a lovely treat when the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust brought some of their friends to school. P1-5 learned lots of interesting facts about the types of mammals in our waters and enjoyed listening to recordings of the mammal conversations. It was fascinating to hear about the research and monitoring carried out by the HWDT.

Rockfield orienteers win Inter- school Championship
Following a short period of training 32 children from Rockfield P4-7 took part in the OLI Interschool Orienteering championships on Friday at Ganavan in glorious sunny weather. The children had a fantastic experience and were great ambassadors for the school. They all attempted to navigate their way around various courses at great speed with some children achieving first, second or third place but all children put in a fantastic effort and tried their very best.

First Shared Finish at Colgrain
On Tuesday we had our first Shared Finish of the Summer term. We couldn’t believe how beautiful the weather was, so we planned lots of outdoor learning opportunities! We had fun throwing wet sponges to create sums, making natural material graphs, using sticks to make capital letters, writing fairytale stories in the Magic Garden….and so much more! Lots and lots of parents came to share in the fun. Afterwards, we all came together to reflect on what we had enjoyed and what we had been learning about. We used this information to help us plan for next week. We can’t wait!
