After having sat their exam in May, the Higher French class of 2012-13 benefited from the ability to keep up their speaking and language skills, through travelling to Geneva in Switzerland the following term. Although none of the pupils carried the subject on to Advanced Higher level, they were all keen to not lose the attribute of knowing a foreign language.

Help for the Philippines
We had a pop up collection on Tuesday 3rd December at break and lunch time. S1 pupils carried the buckets and everyone dropped in some coins. We raised £117.22 which has been sent to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to help with much needed short-term aid such as water purification tablets, food supplies and shelter. As we approach Christmas, we try to imagine the hardships which many people in that part of the world are facing.
A big thank you to the pop up helpers and thanks to everyone for donating!
Lochgilphead Joint Campus, Congratulations to Rachael
Congratulations to S4 Int 1 Skills for Work Hair pupil Rachael MacIndeor who competed in Argyll College’s annual hair competition. Rachael came 2nd place in the Hair Up category, competing against both full time and Skills for Work students. She received her certificate at the award ceremony at Argyll College in Oban on Wednesday 18th December
A fantastic achievement. Well done Rachael.
CHRISTMAS MARKET
Lochgilphead Joint Campus and Santa want to say “Thank You” to all who participated in any way to this wonderful event. The amount raised for the Campus currently stands at £2080. A total of £8030 has been raised over the 4 Christmas Markets we have had since 2010 . Well done to everyone involved!

S4 pupil Lorna Unkles achieved the amazing feat of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro over the October break. The ascent of just under 6000m took 8 days, with the climb to the summit being completed in a gruelling 15 hours. Accompanied by her dad, Lorna took on the challenge to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care and has so far accumulated the magnificent total of £4,500.00 with contributions still being accepted through her JustGiving page.

Nature of Scotland Awards 2013
On Wednesday 30th October representatives from SNAPBERRY, the photography collaboration between Lochgilphead High School and SNH, attended a black tie function in Edinburgh for the RSPB Nature of Scotland awards.
The group had been nominated and shortlisted in the largest category, the Community Initiative award, and faced fierce competition from projects across Scotland. We were absolutely thrilled to be runners-up and recieve a Highly Commended award which will have pride of place in the school trophy cabinet.

Author tours Argyll & Bute secondary schools.
Scots author Alan Bissett visited most of our secondary schools recently, delivering readings and hosting workshops.
The author of Boyracers, Pack Men, Death of a Ladies’ Man and The Incredible Adam Spark, who was brought up in Falkirk, spoke to S3-S6 pupils about what had inspired him to write his books. Alan, born in 1975, had his first novel published in 2001, and has also written two solo plays, a one-woman show and a short documentary, as well as numerous projects in collaboration with other artists. Lochgilphead Joint Campus provides a safe and relaxing environment which gives us many opportunities to learn through academic and extra-curricular activities for pupils of all ages.
The high level of teaching has allowed many pupils from the school to go into further education and broadens their experiences of learning.

Poplar Hawk Moth
This Poplar Hawk Moth was rescued from imminent danger of being squashed from the cashpoint at Tescos! It visited many classes throughout the campus, having been named ‘Reginald’ by an S4 Biology class. It was released back into the wild later that day after a day of adventure!
Snapberry makes Nature of Scotland awards shortlist
On Tuesday 18th June representatives from the Snapberry group attended a reception at the Scottish Parliament for the RSPB Nature of Scotland 2013 awards. Various groups and individuals were nominated in several categories from across Scotland and Snapberry were absolutely delighted to be placed in the finalists’ shortlist in the Community Initiative category – a real testament to how the project has evolved to include the school, SNH, ArtMap Argyll and the Lantern Parade over the last five years. P7 Induction Days
The P7s from all our Primaries were in High School for 4 days, gettiing to know new friends and experiencing different High School subjects. The theme this year was ‘The Commonwealth’ – pupils started work on this in Primaries. S6 Mentors were a great help throughout the week. Well done all P7s and hope you are looking forward to August!

Lochgilphead High School have had two exciting developments for their Snapberry project in recent weeks.
Kilmartin House Museum has asked to display and sell a selection of the students’ images from the last five years. The photos are on display at the Museum and monies raised will help the students support the work of Lochgilphead’s ARMS centre. Continue reading Snapberry Project
Campus Eco Schools Success
The Lochgilphead Joint Campus Eco Schools Committee have joined the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening and are reaping the benefits by reaching Level 3 of the organisations Benchmarking Scheme. This was achieved by providing evidence of pupil’s class work, putting a holiday maintenance scheme in place for the campus garden, growing a range of plants (see table by clicking HERE) adopting sustainable gardening practices, using appropriate signs and labels for seedlings & plants in the campus garden and finally showing the pupils in action using all of their gardening skills. Wordsmith Holly ‘seas’ off the competition
Holly Smith, first year student of Lochgilphead High School, was selected out of 74,000 entries to take part in the next stage of the Chris Evans’ 500 Word Short Story competition.
The nationwide competition held by the Radio 2 breakfast show was open to any pupil under the age of 14 that could invent an imaginative storyline. Holly came up with the concept of her story whilst doing a class exercise in English, and her piece was specially chosen to be included in the shortlist of the top 50 entrants.

Loghilphead Joint Campus – Fundraiser for Rainbow Valley
ON the 4th May a group of senior students and one of their teachers from Lochgilphead High School, bravely shaved their heads for charity.
The event which took place in front of the public at the Argyll Inn on Sunday was in aid of the local cancer charity, Rainbow Valley. The group of fundraisers included fifth year student Lee MacLean, fourth years Coll MacCallum and Patrick Feeney, as well as English teacher Ronnie Cameron. LOCHGILPHEAD HIGH SCHOOL – BADMINTON SCOTLAND SCHOOL OF THE MONTH
On Thursday the 2nd May, John Shearer of Badminton Scotland came to the Joint Campus to present the High School with the ‘School of the Month’ award for April 2013. Jillian Gibson, Active Schools Co-ordinator, nominated the High School largely due to the success of the after school club which ‘is the most popular club currently running at the school, with over 30 pupils attending each week.’

Argyll Brass is a band started up by Mr Tarn in January last year. The band is made up of primary 7’s to S5’s: Fiona cupples, Matthew Tanner, Gavin Johnson, Amy Lockhart, Eilish Malcolm, Carys Macpherson,Sean Doogan, Fergus Langlands, Sam Barker, Hollie MacGregor,Eden Mikula, Alister Cupples, Sinead Pow and Freya Corner and pupils from other schools. Lochgilphead Young Enterprise Team
Over the last year, Lochgilphead High School’s Young Enterprise team has created T-shirts designed by themselves, and have excelled in selling the product to fellow school pupils and peers. The team was automatically entered in the area finals which took place on the 23 of April at Inveraray, directly competing against other schools.

Lochgilphead High School Pupil Planner
Lochgilphead High School pupils receive a ‘Pupil Planner’ each year. The planners are issued to all four Clans and each Clan has it’s very own ‘Cover Design’. This coming August is no exception and S1 pupils were challenged to come up with a ‘Cover design’ during their art classes. The winning designs have been chosen and will be seen on each planner soon. Oban Dance Competition
Lochgilphead High School’s Fusion Dance Club competed in a dance competition at Oban High School on 25 March. They entered three groups; S1, S2 and Seniors. The S1 group danced to ‘Written in the Stars’ and won an award for ‘Best Presentation’ and were delighted at receiving the award for their very first competition. The S2 group who danced to ‘You Bring Joy’ and the Seniors who danced to ‘Radioactive’ thoroughly enjoyed the experience even though they weren’t as successful as the S1 group.
