Strone Primary Schools pupils receive Sports Prize

Active Schools Co-Ordinator Lindsay Mitchell presented Strone Primary School pupils with a bag of sports equipment for having the highest percentage of pupils taking part in the Commonwealth Passports scheme last year, which rewarded pupils participating in extra-curricular sports activities both in and out of school.

Jump Rope for Heart challenge at Strone Primary School

As part of an action packed Health Week at Strone Primary, pupils took on the British Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart sponsored skipping challenge and raised a fantastic £260!

The week long programme also included taster sessions in yoga, karate and zumba, wildfire cooking and outdoor learning activities.

WHAT A GREAT OPPORTUNITY ROSNEATH!

4 lucky children from Rosneath Primary were invited to Glasgow City Chambers last Thursday to a Game On Scotland Celebration Event. They had the opportunity to meet up with 80 other children from schools all over Scotland for a fun-filled day where they met Team Scotland/Team GB athletes from 4 different sports. All schools taking part had been awarded a Game On Scotland plaque and shared their challenges.

It’s not every day that DGS pupils can boast of being part of a football training session with a national cup winning manager – but that is exactly what happened last week, when Dylan Kerr visited the school.
Dylan enjoyed a very long and distinguished playing career, including successful spells with Leeds United and Kilmarnock.

Strath of Appin Cycle Ride

Strath of Appin Pre-5 unit and P1 pupils went on a long cycle ride on 17th Sept. The event was suggested by a pre-schooler who enjoyed cycling and as the school is next to the Route 78 track the group took full advantage of this. The children were joined by staff and parent helpers. The children completed a total of 6km, which was a brilliant effort. All children gained a real sense of achievement, enjoyed keeping physically fit and were very responsible whilst cycling as they had to be aware of other users of the track. Campbeltown Grammar School golfers get up close to the Ryder Cup

Campbeltown Grammar School golfers get up close to the Ryder Cup Pupils from Campbeltown Grammar School welcomed the Ryder Cup to Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club in Kintyre on a tour of Scotland before the Gleneagles event tees off on 26th September. On that date Europe’s top golfers will take on those of the USA for the 2014 Ryder Cup  – from 26th to 28th September. Richard Hills, Europe’s Ryder Cup director, says: ‘This is about sharing the magic of the Ryder Cup. Whole School Orienteering at Sandbank Primary!

A whole school orienteering event took place at Sandbank Primary School on the last Thursday of the June term 2014. The pupils of Gaelic medium P6/7 had walked up to the Heritage trail the previous week, chosen a safe but challenging area for a star-orienteering exercise, drew the maps and planned the course. Back at school they prepared the materials (bilingually (Gaelic & English) and laminated the maps ready for the big day. Miss Wombwell split the rest of the school into mixed ability teams.

Game On – A Lasting Legacy

As part of the Scottish Government’s Legacy Gift initiative, Education Scotland was allocated 1000 Games tickets to distribute to children and young people who had engaged with the Game On Scotland programme, as part of the Commonwealth Games.
Schools were invited to apply for tickets by completing a survey about activities held in conjunction with the Game On website and Commonwealth Games, to be put in the ballot for a chance to win 10 tickets for sporting Games tickets.

Christian Aid Success for Cardross

Cardross primary were delighted to scoop the Christian aid trophies in both football and netball this year. Both teams faced stiff competition from Colgrain and their respective finals. The events were well organised and the pupils enjoyed taking part. Well done to all involved!

Sizzling Summer Spectacular to end school year at DGS

Over 180 S6 pupils, staff and their families enjoyed a samba inspired BBQ last Thursday evening (26 June) to mark the end of a successful school year.

The school yard was transformed into the ‘Copacabana Courtyard’ – complete with inflatable palm trees – as pupils and staff enjoyed a World Cup themed afternoon that included a bbq, beach volleyball, limbo dancing, football target challenge and trampoline.

Bowling Club Visit

Pupils from Garelochhead Primary School enjoyed a visit to Garelochhead Bowling Club recently.
The Primary 2 class went along to the club as part of their interdisciplinary learning on the Commonwealth Games. Club members Mr Kjorstad and Mr Leishman taught them about the rules, the object of the game and the equipment that you need to play.

Stramash visit Barcaldine Primary

Stramash visited us again last week however this time we got to stay in our own playground. We were joined by Achaleven primary School pupils and Rob from Stramash delivered a PE session with all the children. We certainly had a beautiful day for it and we actually had to take shelter because it was so hot.

Champions Campbeltown Pupils Visit Dalintober PS

Campbeltown Pupils’ Manager Norman Thomson visited Dalintober Primary last week with two of his squad members, John McCallum and Stuart Crossan, to take part in a Q & A and coaching session with the school football players and referees. They also brought along the League Trophy they recently secured and their medals. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we look forward to welcoming them back for future coaching sessions. A big thank you from Dalintober!

Barcaldine Primary and Stramash

Last week the children from Barcaldine Primary School had two excursions with Stramash. On Tuesday the children enjoyed a hiking adventure and went along to Ben Lora in Benderloch. The weather wasn’t kind to us but we managed to reach the viewpoint without too much mud on our wellies. On Thursday we were taken along to Loch Creran where we went canoeing. The children had a ball and we even found a starfish! Thanks very much to Stramash for two amazing days.

Strone Primary Commonwealth Sports Day

On Thursday 19th June we held our very own Commonwealth Games in fantastic sunshine at Grahams Point, hugely supported by our parents, carers, families and the local community. The four house teams each chose a Commonwealth country and made flags, decorated t-shirts, and made food to represent their country, which added to the carnival atmosphere. The winning team were Trinidad and Tobago and all the pupils received a medal for their efforts on the day.

News from Furnace and Minard

Joint sports day at Minard
The children at Minard and Furnace Primaries enjoyed a lovely afternoon of sporting activities at Minard Primary school on Wednesday the 18th. Organised by our PE teacher, Mrs Floyd, the children were split into four teams and took part in a variety of events including ‘Jimmygymnastics’ ‘water archery’ and the space hopper relay!

Robert Miller Baton Bearer Visits Dunoon Primary!

Robert Miller, a 4th year pupil at Dunoon Grammar School recently visited Dunoon Primary School to talk about his recent nomination as Baton Bearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay. During his enthusiastic presentation he said he was surprised to hear he had been selected from so many community nominations as up to 4000 Baton Bearers from 34 local authorities will take part in the relay.
