A group of Primary 7 children at St. Mun’s were recently presented with their well-earned i-cycle certificates at a whole school assembly.
The children who had undergone their training in Term 1, had to demonstrate their ability to ride safely on the road (displaying knowledge of the Highway Code), cycle maintenance and road user awareness, as well as passing a written multiple choice test. Well done everyone.

Colgrain support Scotland at the Emirates Stadium
On 14th January, the Colgrain netball club travelled to the brand new Commonwealth Stadium in Glasgow to support the Scotland International team. The Scottish Ferns Netball team were playing the reigning commonwealth champions The New Zealand Ferns in an exciting and quick paced match at the Emirates Stadium!
Although the Ferns won 63 – 26, the pupils from Colgrain were always in good spirits, always encouraging the Thistles to do well with chants of ‘Come on Scotland’ and Mexican waves.

Dalintober PS Allotment wins ACHA ‘Garden In Boom 2013’ Competition
Dalintober Primary School pupils and staff were delighted to hear that they had been awarded first prize in Argyll Community Housing Association’s ‘Garden In Bloom 2013’ competition. Members of the Mid Argyll & Kintyre Area Committee scored allotments independently and Dalintober’s allotment was judged the best. Members of the Eco-Group, staff and parent and partners have all helped to maintain the allotment, growing a wide range of fruit and vegetables which has been used in school meals and for ‘Green Days’.

Dunoon Grammar School – Learning Support Festive Fun Raises Funds for Children and Communities all Over the World
Every year in Dunoon Grammar School, The Learning Support Department hosts a Christmas Fayre to raise money for their chosen charity, ‘World Vision.’ ‘World Vision’ is a charity that helps children and their community to achieve success in far less privileged parts of the world than ours. This year’s event was similar to previous years but unlike previous years, when teachers have organised everything, this year S6 pupil Rebecca Westwood played the coordinating role.

St Joseph’s sing for the Community!
The first public performance of St. Joseph’s Primary School’s new singing ensemble ‘St Joseph’s Dynamic Diamonds’ took place on Friday 13 December at Clyde View care home in Cardross. The recently formed ensemble practises each Tuesday under the excellent guidance and leadership of Mrs Helen Innes, one of our mums. Helen is a qualified Music Teacher and gives of her own time each Tuesday to practise with the children……..and on Friday it all paid off!
Oban Hoopsters Take the Win!
Oban High School Senior Boys A Team and Junior Girls took the top title in the Argyll & Bute Basketball Tournament held at Atlantic Leisure Centre on Thursday 12 December. Mrs Sharp, the Junior Girls’ and Boys’ team coach, was delighted with the teams’ win. “They have worked really hard to get to the top of their game and this win represents their high level of dedication and skill at basketball.” She added that she is confident the teams will continue to excel at the sport.

Dunoon Primary’s Eco School’s Commitee 2012/2013 were delighted to receive their second Green Flag Award in the summer of 2013. Our Eco School’s assessor, Paul Love was delighted with all the Eco School improvements our school had made for e.g. further improvements to our Fairy Garden and was delighted to witness a real life mum and dad Coal Tit fly out of the newly designed bird house made by one of our P6 pupils and their grandfather last year. Grandparents Day at Port Charlotte
Primary 1/2/3 pupils waited eagerly for the arrival of their very special guests. The children were looking forward to sharing what they had found out about family structures then and now. Lots of activities were planned and delivered by the children. Through interviewing grandparents they found out lots of information about the past. The day began with a ‘Grandma Rap’ which was so well received it had to be sung twice. Hermitage pupils win Cross Country awards.
Getting up early on a Sunday to brave freezing temperatures paid off for pupils of Hermitage Primary when they competed at the Garscube Harriers Cross Country. The challenging course didn’t deter the pupils who secured both individual and team prizes. Hermitage Primary is very proud of all the runners, not just due to the awards they received but also because they displayed excellent sportsmanship. A special mention goes to the team prize winners. Rachael McKillop, Sophie Muchie and Sophie McAuley won bronze for the Primary 7s while Calum McGilrvrary, Cameron Cromar and Ruaridh Fletcher scooped silver for the Primary 6s.
Rothesay Primary Scots Day
Rothesay Primary celebrated Book Week Scotland by learning more about the Scots language. Richt guid tales have been written, sangs sung and poems learned by heart. Pupils shared facts aboot famous Scots they admire and have voted for their favourite Scottish authors as part of the Scottish Book Awards. The finale to the week for Primary 1, 2 and 3 was a Scots Ceilidh. Primary 2 and 3 wowed us with their ‘St Bernard’s Waltz’ and ‘Canadian Barn Dance’ and we were fair dumfoonart with their rendition of ‘Is a dove a doo, dad?’ which has 5 verses! Easdale Primary Pre 5
Easdale Primary Pre 5 have been out and about investigating different modes of transport. Over the past few weeks they travelled to Oban on the bus and visited the Fire Station and Lifeboat Station, popping into the CalMac and Scot Rail offices to collect time tables. PC Moore came into school grounds with his police car. The children were very enthusiastic and asked lots of questions about the vehicle and rescue equipment. Their topic will hopefully end with santa and his sleigh.
Cardross Primary Mugdock Park Cross Country Success
Cardross Primary recently competed in the Mugdock Park Cross Country Championships. The pupils from P6 and P7 were accompanied and trained by Mrs Girling. All of the runners were impressive on the day but a notable mention must be given to the P7 boys team who came in first place with some excellent individual performances. This was a fantastic achievement for the boys who were up against some stiff competition from some very large Glasgow schools.

Internet Safety Caption
Nervously, on Friday 1st November 2013, we waited for Sergeant Rae to come in to teach us about the dangers of the internet.
First we learned about file sharing then cautiously we talked openly about e-mail. Crazily, most of us use e-mail often and it is very popular, although Facebook and Twitter are very well known and used as well.
Barnacle, Fish or Fowl?
On Friday Primary 6&7 pupils at Port Ellen were visited by artist and teacher Phillipa Mitchell for an afternoon of geese and art. Islay is famous for its winter visitors, the barnacle geese, and Phillipa wanted to find out how the children felt about the geese. In the morning children debated in class the pros and cons of the geese visiting Islay: they are beautiful and attract birdwatchers and tourists, but they also destroy the grass and make life very difficult for farmers. Opinion was divided about what should be done about the 50,000 visitors the Island receives each year.

Charlie only took up the sport this year and last weekend received a trophy to show her achievements this year. Well done Charlie!
Christmas Carpentry at Sandbank Primary School
Primary 3 (Mainstream and Gaelic) and GM 6/7 from Sandbank Primary School are using their woodwork skills to transform a square of wood into a star with the minimum of wasted material. GM 6/7 have proved themselves to be responsible and trustworthy therefore they are making their stars as an independent mini-topic whenever they have a spare moment of the day. The younger pupils get their instruction during their Friday afternoon activity lessons.

Alimacs Tennis at Cardross
P1-7 pupils at Cardross enjoyed a fun filled tennis day. The tennis sessions were taken by Alan MacBeath, Head Coach at Cardross Tennis Club. The pupils were not the only ones having fun! The staff were treated to an after-school CPD event too.
Rockfield Primary visit Oban Lifeboat Station
P2s from Rockfield had a fantastic trip to Oban Lifeboat Station on Friday 8th November. Working in 3 groups, the children got to find out more about the work of the lifeboat, what the crew wear when they are on a rescue and, most importantly, they got to climb aboard the lifeboat for a tour. The children have been learning about People Who Help Us and they were very keen to learn about the work of the RNLI as part of their topic work.

Pre-5 and P7 work together at Appin
‘The Primary 7 and pre-5 pupils at Strath of Appin school have been busy foraging berries along the local cycle track, learning about what berries you can eat and those that can be used to make jellies. Their efforts resulted in a sale of jellies that were made from the fruits picked. There were a variety of jellies such as rowan, hedgerow and bramble. £43.28 was raised and has been placed in school funds for future use. This project has developed from a pilot scheme where the P7’s meet with the pre 5 children every week, encouraging learning, developing good friendships, mentoring and building confidence all round.’
