After many weeks of studying cycling and road safety theory and practical sessions in the playground and on the road, Primary 6 were finally ready to sit their cycling proficiency in June. We were all very proud of everyone who took part and passed with flying colours.
Rothesay Primary would like to thank the parents and staff who worked with the pupils enabling them to achieve success. The smiles in the photo say it all!

Minard Primary School
The children of Minard Primary School conducted surveys last term to discover how much litter there was in school and around the village. They realised that there was quite a bit of dog mess in the village but nowhere to dispose of it. After writing letters to The Environment Officer in Lochgilphead they were very pleased when David came to meet them and to discuss what they wanted. They decided to install a special bin and display notices round the village to encourage people to pick up after their pets. The bin was installed during the summer break much to the delight of the children.mi
Essay Success – What does ‘sustainable living’ mean to you?
Each year the Trust for Sustainable Living organises a global essay competition, which this year invited schoolchildren to outline their ideas for sustainable living and the steps needed for societies to achieve them. This year 73 countries participated and essays were received from 1,094 children. We had several finalists from Port Ellen and in July Asher travelled down to Oxford to attend the international schools debate, which was attended by children from 23 countries.

Going back to school after the summer holidays can be difficult for everyone but just put yourself in the shoes of a 4 or 5 year old Primary One pupil. All those big children and ‘hard’ sums, not to mention the long day, would be enough to put even the most confident of us into a spin.

Christian Aid Success for Cardross
Cardross primary were delighted to scoop the Christian aid trophies in both football and netball this year. Both teams faced stiff competition from Colgrain and their respective finals. The events were well organised and the pupils enjoyed taking part. Well done to all involved!
Learning centre pupils trek to the top of Mount ‘Kilimancamelshump.’
On the 17th June, Dunoon Grammar School learning centre pupils, teaching and support staff walked up The Camel’s Hump to raise money for CLASP/Cornerstone. Parent, Frances Halligan, is walking to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa in September of this year and this learning centre sponsored walk was to support her huge fundraising efforts to help CLASP/Cornerstone provide a youth club service for young people with additional learning needs. Dancing their socks off!
Lochgilphead Primary 2 and Primary 3/2 classes have been dancing their socks off! As part of their topic this term these classes joined up to learn about different styles of dance. Children learned basic moves for merengue, hip hop and waltz then choreographed their own dance sequence. As a culmination of the topic the children put on a dance show for parents, families and friends. It was an enormous success and the children and audience loved every minute of it. Safety at Sea
As we are learning about the Sea this term, Achaleven Primary took up the kind offer from the volunteers at RNLI Oban Lifeboat to visit and learn all about the work they do. We had great fun trying on all the safety gear and seeing all the equipment that is on board the boat. Following on from this trip we have decided that we want to help raise money for RNLI next year. Thank you to the volunteers who took the time to show us around. Thanks also to Alba Sailing for lending us life jackets for our trip.
Roots of Empathy at Dunoon Primary
This session, Primary 3 have been involved in an exciting new initiative called Roots of Empathy. Throughout the year there have been weekly visits from the instructor Ailsa Dominic, Early Years & Family Support Worker and every three weeks a visit from a mother and baby, Kym and Harris Byron.

Champions Campbeltown Pupils Visit Dalintober PS
Campbeltown Pupils’ Manager Norman Thomson visited Dalintober Primary last week with two of his squad members, John McCallum and Stuart Crossan, to take part in a Q & A and coaching session with the school football players and referees. They also brought along the League Trophy they recently secured and their medals. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we look forward to welcoming them back for future coaching sessions. A big thank you from Dalintober!
Strone Primary Commonwealth Sports Day
On Thursday 19th June we held our very own Commonwealth Games in fantastic sunshine at Grahams Point, hugely supported by our parents, carers, families and the local community. The four house teams each chose a Commonwealth country and made flags, decorated t-shirts, and made food to represent their country, which added to the carnival atmosphere. The winning team were Trinidad and Tobago and all the pupils received a medal for their efforts on the day.

Joint sports day at Minard
The children at Minard and Furnace Primaries enjoyed a lovely afternoon of sporting activities at Minard Primary school on Wednesday the 18th. Organised by our PE teacher, Mrs Floyd, the children were split into four teams and took part in a variety of events including ‘Jimmygymnastics’ ‘water archery’ and the space hopper relay!
Cycling proficiency success Small Isles
Small Isles is proud to announce that our P7s successfully completed their cycling proficiency training on Thursday 19th June. It has taken two terms of regular training to get to this point, and to those of you who think that learning to ride a bike competently would be easy on Jura, we would say think again; a single track road has it’s own challenges, especially in tourist season. Well done P7s and a big thank you to Dorota, our instructor.

All P6 pupils in Dalintober PS completed and passed their Cycling Proficiency theory test and practicals. The class and their teacher, Miss Brown, would like to thank June and Kay and all the volunteers and parent helpers who gave up their time to help with training.
Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth
On the 4th of June some of the learning centre pupils of Dunoon Grammar school went to Scottish Disability Sports Athletics event at Grangemouth. We won 4 medals, 3 bronze medals and 1 gold medal. After a long day running we were all really sleepy, some of us had a sleep on the bus! We met lots of other kids from different schools in Scotland.

PHENOMENAL CYCLISTS – P6 AT ROSNEATH
Today, P6 were absolutely delighted that ALL 11 cyclists passed their Cycling Proficiency Theory Test and ALL got an ‘A’ Pass in the practical.
Kay, Road Safety Officer, said she had never seen such phenomenal cycling!

Exciting News from St. Muns!
St. Mun’s Pupils Awarded Blue Peter Green Badge
The Rolls Royce Science Project, ‘If You Go Down In The Woods Today’, has definitely inspired a number of children in the school. None more so than 3 Primary 7s, Leonie Cuddahy, Ewan McIntosh and Scott Stewart, who decided to write to Blue Peter and tell them what they had been up to over the course of the last year.
Commonwealth Games on Lismore
The North Lorn Primary Schools – Lismore, Strath of Appin, Ardchattan, Barcaldine along with Achaleven and Kilchrenan from further afield, held their own Commonwealth Games on Lismore on Thursday 5th June. Calmac very kindly ran two special ferries to accommodate the 70 visiting children together with staff and parents. The Games began with an Opening Ceremony where each school representing a different Commonwealth country paraded with a flag and a banner before performing a dance or song from their chosen nation.
Flushed With Success at Rothesay Joint Campus
Rothesay Joint Campus Eco Committee was invited to Edinburgh last week to discuss the findings of their enquiry into school toilets. The enquiry, ‘Flushed With Success’ was initiated by Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People and sounded just the sort of thing we would like to get our teeth into (in a manner of speaking!).
Over the last session we have conducted surveys about the Rights of the Child, questionnaires, created power points, had a poster campaign and uncovered the good, the bad and the ugly about school toilets!
