Primary 2 from Castlehill Primary School enjoyed a visit from the Co-op who talked about the environment and Fairtrade Products and the children entered a Green schools Competition. Their Eco pictures were displayed in the foyer of the Co-op during the Easter holidays.
The children then visited the Co-op and would like to thank the staff for their kind donation of seeds and compost for their school garden and also for the Easter treats.

An inspired parent, Mr Michael Angus, offered his expertise and came to Garelochhead Primary to teach us about Architecture. We created imaginary cities based on our visions for the future. We had to describe our vision to others and they had to put our ideas onto a visual drawing.

Garelochhead Primary, Helensburgh Art Club
All classes have participated in an Art Liaison with Helensburgh Art Club. P7/6 were fortunate to work alongside Mrs Mary Duncan, a retired Art Teacher, to make Panda Puppets to be used with script work. We also created a scroll to highlight the need to keep pandas in their natural habitats – bamboo heaven!
Rockfield Gaelic classes launch books
Before the Easter break, children in Rockfield’s Gaelic classes hosted an open afternoon to celebrate the launch of their very own books. The event was a really enjoyable way to end a very productive term and to involve parents, carers and peers in the children’s learning.
P2/1G based their books on their topic ‘Air an Tuathanas’ (On the Farm) and P4/3G created imaginative stories about ‘Na Lochlannaich’ (The Vikings). The children were really inspired by the book-writing project and produced some excellent work.
P2 Viking Open Afternoon
Primary Two at Rhu Primary recently held an Open Afternoon with parents, to celebrate the completion of their Viking topic. Pupils enjoyed showcasing their learning, which included literacy, art and technology work. They also displayed their musical talents, performing Thor the Thunderer and Odin’s Daughters! Parents joined in with various activities including food tasting, internet research, interactive games, map work and decoding Viking runes. It was a very exciting end to a very successful topic!
The Great Escape at Rhu Primary
Primary 1 at Rhu lovingly made and decorated teddy bears, as part of their Toyland topic. The children were delighted with the results and couldn’t wait to take them home.
However, those teddies had other ideas and kept escaping. One day they just disappeared. Imagine the pupils’ surprise when their teddies turned up at ‘Helensburgh Toy Shop’. Fiona was happy to look after the teddies but was exhausted chasing after them and trying to serve customers at the same time.

THE BIG GREEN ADVENTURE
Pupils in P1-P7 at Kilcreggan Primary School recently entertained parents and friends with their wonderful production of The Big Green Adventure. The musical show had an eco message. Scenes and songs gave messages about recycling, being transport aware, switching off unneeded electrical appliances and caring for our environment. All classes participated in the song and action part of the show with P5-7 pupils taking on the speaking parts. Pupils amazed their audiences at both performances with their great acting. Young Art Talent Emerging in DGS
Corrie MacDonald, S2 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School proudly presents Head Teacher Mr. Mitchell with a piece of original artwork to hang outside his office. Corrie finds some aspects of the curriculum very challenging and does a lot of his learning in the learning centre. But, amongst other things, Corrie has a real talent for art.
Dalmally Daffodil tea
The children from d Dalmally Primary School organised and held a ”Daffodil Tea” with all proceeds split between Marie Curie Cancer Care and MacMillan cancer Support.
We had a fantastic turn out and raised £170 in only one hour!
‘Be our Guest’ at Dunoon Primary!
Dunoon Primary School Choir hosted a superb Daffodil Tea entitled ‘Be Our Guest’. The afternoon show was attended by members from various senior citizen groups within our local community and it has indeed become an annual event. The children began the programme with a medley of Scottish songs including old favourites like ‘Red Yoyo’, ‘Skyscraper Wean’ and ‘Loch Lomond’. The solo singers sang so sweetly and clearly wowing the audience both at the afternoon tea and in the evening, much to the pleasure of the very proud parents!
Rockfield’s Got Talent
Over the last eight weeks pupils of Rockfield Primary School have been organising a spectacular show. Primary7/6/5G and Primary 6 have put on an amazing school talent show for the community. The acts wowed the judges (Mr Degnan, Miss McKerrell and Mrs MacIntyre) with their huge amount of talent. We had a brilliant host from Oban High School and his name was Mr McKenna. We filled in application forms, stating which group we would like to be in.
Kilmartin Tie-Dye Enterprise Project
The children at Kilmartin P.S. showed off their new tie-dyed t-shirts at the recent Mid Argyll Music Festival. Who wants to perform in boring navy school sweatshirts when you can brighten everyone’s day with a touch of the Caribbean? As part of the Cloth Uncut project, the children have screen printed patterns after looking at a variety of fabrics from African countries, woven their own tartan with lace and ribbon to represent Cyprus and finally learned how to tie-dye after looking at Caribbean fabrics.
Clever Cloth Uncut at Rosneath
On Thursday 27th March pupils and staff at Rosneath Primary welcomed artist, Lee Hendrick into their school to teach them a variety of exciting skills. Cloth Uncut is a visual arts programme which was greatly received by all at Rosneath.
Islay Schools Band Concert
Last Thursday 27th March Islay Schools Bands held a fantastic concert, normally it is only the High School Band and the Primary Schools Band (children from all Primaries on Islay & Jura) but a brand new after school Band was formed last year to give younger children a chance to begin learning an instrument from Primary 3. They are called “Ceol na Cloinne” (Music of the Children) and they meet at Islay High School every Friday. Southend goes back in time
Pupils in the P5-7 class have been studying the Highland Clearances and Scottish Emigration through the novel, The Desperate Journey by Kathleen Fiddler. This inter-disciplinary project has brought together drama, art, music and literacy as well as learning about the lives of the Highland people 150 – 200 years ago. Model crofts were made of clay then thatched using dried grass and rashes from the fields.
‘Really Weird Removals.com’ author Daniela Sacredoti visits Kirn Primary 5
In Primary Five at Kirn we have been reading ‘Really Weird Removals.com’ as our novel study this term, and have used the story as the inspiration for creating film adverts, life size characters, emails and much more. So, how exciting to be able to meet the author, Daniela Sacerdoti, in person in our own classroom!

St Joseph’s Choir join LoCCo for a Community Performance
Saturday 29 March, 2014 was a ‘first’ for St Joseph’s Primary School choir. Aptly named ‘St Joseph’s Dynamic Diamonds’, the children sang for the first time with LoCCo – Lomond and Clyde Community Orchestra – for the community of Helensburgh at the Victoria Halls.

Luss Win Rotary Photographic Competition
Two pupils from Luss Primary School took top prizes in the Helensburgh Rotary Club Photographic Competition. A P7 pupil won the Intermediate 11-13 years category and a P5 pupil took second prize in the Junior 7-11 years category. Pupils and their families will attend a presentation ceremony in Helensburgh on 15th April where the overall competition winner will be announced.
‘Cloth Uncut’ visits Kilcreggan Primary
“Cloth Uncut” recently visited Kilcreggan Primary. “Cloth Uncut” is a primary school visual arts programme. Pupils were challenged to create a piece of cloth which represented Scotland’s welcome to the Commonwealth Games. Pupils at Kilcreggan Primary enjoyed working in vertical (mixed age) groups with artist, Lee Hendrick, to create their pieces of cloth. Pupils produced several pieces of woven material using a variety of materials inspired by our Commonwealth twinned nations, Swaziland and Cyprus. St Joseph’s Scoop The Double…..AGAIN!
Entries for the Helensburgh Rotary Club Young Photographer Competition 2014 were judged on 22 March, 2014 and St Joseph’s came out tops….for the second year running! Last year St Joseph’s had two winners in the Junior Category and this year again we had two prize winners in the Junior Section; one child won (age 7) third prize with one child (age 9) taking the top prize.
