Learning Centre @ Rockfield: We are going mad for DUCKS!

Rockfield PS LC Duck 1We have waited a very long 28 days for our duck eggs to hatch. Now they are finally here; and we think they are adorable! We have had so many pupils and staff members come to visit us and our ducklings. This term we have learnt about life cycles by hatching our ducklings and growing wonderful vegetables. It has been a fun term!

Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland

Tesco Bank & R-Breakers logoThis year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Aimed and 4-11 year olds, Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records. Children are encouraged to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays– it’s absolutely free – and pre-schoolers can take part in the mini-Challenge. Roots of Empathy

Rosneath Roots of Empathy 1This session, 21 pupils from Primary 2/3 have been involved in an exciting new initiative called Roots of Empathy. Throughout the year there have been weekly visits from the instructor Jane McLean, School Nurse and every two weeks a visit from a mother and baby, Kathy and Hamish.
Roots of Empathy is an innovative program teaching pupils valuable lessons while fostering a more nurturing and caring environment in the classroom.

Pencil Cases for Nepal

Taynuilt nepal pencil casesJenna (P3), Aaron (P1) and Owen (Nursery)’s Uncle Matt was in Nepal during the recent Earthquake. He has been back in the UK speaking and fundraising to help the people of Nepal rebuild their country and he asked Taynuilt Primary to help the children of a school similar size to ours. Many schools were destroyed by the quake and everything was lost. They are trying to restart the schools but have no equipment at all.

Cardross Primary 7 in the Spotlight!

Cardross Oscar 4On Thursday the 4th of June we had our Oscar Night at the Roslea Hall Hotel in Rhu. This was to celebrate the success of our Homunculi Movies which we made in our class with the help of our teacher Miss Travers. We worked with the psychologists Dr Greig and Amy to find out more about what to do if you are worried about something. Homunculi are tiny people inside your head who help you to function, solve problems and help you with your worries.

Kirn P3 visit Western Ferries

Kirn PS wester ferries 1As part of their Seaside topic, P3 visited Western Ferries to learn about how these big boats work, and visited the beach.

Lots of us have been on Western Ferries to go ‘across the water’, but we don’t normally see the huge engines and all the machinery in the engine room at the bottom of the boat, or the control room where the captain sits right up at the top! The Sunshine Room Reunion

Parklands ReunionThe Sunshine Room Nurture Group at Parklands School held a special reunion for all the pupils past and present to celebrate receiving The Marjorie Boxall Quality Mark Award from the Nurture Group Network. The reunion allowed Adele and Fiona, the nurture group staff to find out how the pupils have been getting on since completing their time at Parklands. There was also time for fun and games and also a special healthy picnic.

Primary 6/7 Election Campaign

RPS Election Campaign 1Primary 6/7 at Rothesay Primary School have been working on a top secret challenge over the past few weeks. They have been receiving challenges and tasks from a secret organisation called MSB – Making Scotland Better. These tasks were to encourage the class to learn about elections and Scottish Parliament, to work with the local community to identify areas of Bute they wished to improve or change and to set up political parties to get these changes put in place.

Visit to the newly opened Atlantic Islands Centre

Luing PS Atlantic Ilsand CentreThe Atlantic Islands Centre on the Isle of Luing was open to visitors for the first time on Monday 25th May. Ukulele Luing – all the pupils from Luing Primary School – visited the centre and held a rehearsal (much to the delight of other visitors) of their performance for the official opening ceremony on 13th June. The children then had a wonderful time exploring the centre and were thrilled to recognise many friends and relatives in the interesting display by Luing Historical Society.

The Sunshine Room Social Skills Group Go Troll Hunting

Parklands School Troll hunting 2The pupils from The Sunshine Room Social Skills Group had a fantastic expedition to Inchcailloch Island, Loch Lomond to hunt for trolls. The boys and girl met with Fiona, the park ranger to look for signs of trolls on the island, while searching for trolls Fiona told them lots about the other animals, birds, insects, plants and flowers that live on the island. The group also had time for some toasted marshmallows on a camp fire (a trolls favourite treat) before playing some magical games on the beach.

Garelochhead PS, proud winners of the Golf Trophy!

Garelochhead Golf PresentationLast term, one of the Golf professionals from Helensburgh Golf Club, Matt Burt, gave golf lessons to P6/5 children at Garelochhead Primary School. This course was part of the Active Schools initiative using amenities in the area to get children more involved in sport. On Good Friday, five of the children who took part in the lessons went to Helensburgh Golf Club to participate in a fun golf competition against some other local schools. They had to show off the skills they had learned by scoring points while putting, chipping and hitting golf balls at targets.

Commander Riches opens the Community Covenant Sports Facilities at Cardross

Cardross Sports Day 3Cardross Primary held their annual sports day yesterday. After the tradition races, Commander Riches OBE from HMNB Clyde cut the ribbon and opened the new school sports courts.

The courts were funded by a successful community covenant bid and have been named after naval ships, boats and colleges that are significant to our armed forces pupils.

St. Joseph’s Pupil Names Local Street

St Josephs Duchess Court 1A great day was had by all recently when representatives of St. Joseph’s Pupil Council and Staff attended the opening ceremony of a new housing development in Helensburgh.

Last year the children of the school took part in a ‘Name the Development’ competition. Linked to the local community, St. Joseph’s pupils were always keen to take part – and to our delight, the winning entry came from a pupil at St. Joseph’s!

The Sunshine Room Nurture Group Farm Visit

Parklands Farm 1The Sunshine Room Nurture Group from Parklands School have been reading the novel Charlotte’s Web, to find out more about life on a farm they visited Mid Auchencarroch Farm in Jamestown. They met John the farmer who told them what life was like living and working on a farm, they got to meet a calf that was born only the day before and they learned about how to care for lambs. Outdoor Learning – Community and Parent Links at St. Joseph’s!

St Jospehs PS Outdoor Learning 1Outdoor Learning has really taken off at St. Joseph’s! Whilst Mrs Thomson and Mrs Savage have been leading developments in the school with Ross, the Pre-5 staff have linked the parental ‘Fun First Fridays’ with outdoor learning, allowing the parents to work and read with their children outdoors. Such is the commitment of the staff to continue to improve this aspect of learning; they are determined not to let the weather stop them.

Book of the Month

Rothesay PS Book of the Month 1Primary 1 and 2 at Rothesay Primary have been working with Patricia McArthur from Rothesay Library and Shiona Lawson, who works in our school Resource Centre. Patricia brings in a copy of our ‘book of the month’ for each pupil and with Shiona, tells the stories through arts and craft activities that the pupils can do in school and at home.

Bowmore Celebrates V.E.Day!

Bowmore PS VE Day 2Thanks to our wonderful kitchen ladies, Bowmore Primary enjoyed a lovely lunch which was reminiscent of the street parties, held in celebration of the Victory in Europe in 1945. This celebration was the brainchild of Mrs McHarrie, our kitchen lady! We had cheese, ham, egg and tinned salmon sandwiches, scones and pancakes, all washed down with lots of juice. We had to bring our own cup and plate as everyone did in 1945.

Achaleven Primary opens new houses in Connel

Achaleven ACHA Houses Opening 4We were very proud, along with John Finnie MSP, to officially open the new ACHA houses that have been built in Connel. A few months ago we suggested some names for the new street and were so excited when one of the names, St Orans, was selected by ACHA. It was lovely that we were invited back for the official opening ceremony.

News Reporters Appointed at Kirn Primary

Kirn News ReportersCongratulations to Oscar, Bronte and Nathan on their success in being appointed as News Reporters in Kirn Primary.

All three P6 children (as well as many other applicants from P6) completed their application forms, then attended an interview before receiving a letter to say they had been successful. All three were very happy to accept!
