Kilchrenan Primary pupils have been learning about the science of plant with Mrs Love, and now it is time to put their new knowledge into action and develop some practical science skills. They selected a range of vegetables and fruit for their new mini greenhouse: two types of tomato, strawberry, garlic, beetroot, mini cucumbers, cabbage and more. They took time to reassess the state of planters around the school. Some have been thrown out and new ones purchased and planted with differing types of plants to attract different types of insects, all to increase biodiversity in the school grounds. Baird of Bute Scholarship
Rothesay Academy recently held an assembly in partnership with the Baird of Bute Society to announce the winners of The Inaugural Baird of Bute Canadian Scholarship. This scholarship has been organised by Mr Chris Markwell of the Baird of Bute Society, and will commence on the 18th of May for three weeks.
This years’ winners are Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden. They will spend three weeks in Canada and will be working with Professor Patrick Gunning at his lab in the University of Toronto.
ROSNEATH PLAY AT HAMPDEN!
As you may know, the famous Hampden Park is being used to host the Field/Athletics events at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. There is major refurbishment going on outside at the moment with the deadline for completion growing ever near!!
PORT ELLEN HOLDS FINANCE WEEK FAIR
This week was finance week at Port Ellen and all the classes have been involved in learning about money, finishing in a finance fair on Friday Morning. Primary 1&2 have been learning about banks and spreadsheets, and have even started saving their money up for the summer holidays. They ran a bank at the exhibition and showed they could count change, and had even made their own piggy banks. Primary 2&3 had made commonwealth animal banks, which included a wonderful anteater and Kiwi bank.
WORTHY MEDAL WINNERS
Rosneath Primary School were delighted to take part in the Inter Schools Cross Country Run at Helensburgh Rugby Club today.
For a small school, we were absolutely delighted and SO proud to come away with the Gold medal for P6 Girls (Eva Campbell) and the Bronze medal for P7 Boys (Marcus Frame).
A GREAT BIG WELL DONE to all of our runners and to everyone who took part and crossed that Finish Line.

P2 Pupils from Castlehill visit local Co-op
Primary 2 from Castlehill Primary School enjoyed a visit from the Co-op who talked about the environment and Fairtrade Products and the children entered a Green schools Competition. Their Eco pictures were displayed in the foyer of the Co-op during the Easter holidays.
The children then visited the Co-op and would like to thank the staff for their kind donation of seeds and compost for their school garden and also for the Easter treats.
Bowmore Primary 2/3’s Learning Festival
On Friday 25th April, a very excited P2/3 hosted a Learning Festival for their families. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share their learning about Homecoming Scotland. They proudly presented their personal projects, teaching their visitors about the island’s many distilleries, Scottish wildlife, dancing, musical instruments and food. There was even an opportunity to taste some shortbread which a couple of girls had baked! It was a very successful afternoon which our parents very much enjoyed.

An inspired parent, Mr Michael Angus, offered his expertise and came to Garelochhead Primary to teach us about Architecture. We created imaginary cities based on our visions for the future. We had to describe our vision to others and they had to put our ideas onto a visual drawing.

Garelochhead Primary, Helensburgh Art Club
All classes have participated in an Art Liaison with Helensburgh Art Club. P7/6 were fortunate to work alongside Mrs Mary Duncan, a retired Art Teacher, to make Panda Puppets to be used with script work. We also created a scroll to highlight the need to keep pandas in their natural habitats – bamboo heaven!
NEW HOTEL OPENS IN GARELOCHHEAD GROUNDS!
P1 & P2 children in Garelochhead Primary worked together with their teachers Mrs Clark and Ms Macaulay to build a bug Hotel in the Anniversary Garden. Recycled resources were sorted, adapted and shaped into a new home for minibeasts. Pupils worked collaboratively in the garden to design and make a hotel fit for the 21st century!
Their biodiversity studies are part of the school’s work to achieve a 3rd Green Flag.

Rhu Primary School Primary 3 Streetfeet
Primary 3 pupils in Rhu Primary School took part in ‘Streetfeet’, a pedestrian training scheme. The scheme consisted of 3 training sessions, the first of which involved role play in the hall and the subsequent two sessions involved kerbside training outside. The children were encouraged to think about how to choose a safe place to cross the road and learned how to cross safely between parked cars.
Rhu Primary School, Primary 3 ? Roman Day
Primary 3 in Rhu Primary School have been learning all about the Romans this term. They looked at the Roman Empire, how Rome was founded, what their lives were like and how they have influenced our lives today. As a celebration of their learning the children took part in a Roman Day. They dressed up as Romans, joined in with different games and activities, such as playing merels, making a bulla, making a scroll, designing a laurel leaf crown and even ate like Romans.
Rockfield Gaelic classes launch books
Before the Easter break, children in Rockfield’s Gaelic classes hosted an open afternoon to celebrate the launch of their very own books. The event was a really enjoyable way to end a very productive term and to involve parents, carers and peers in the children’s learning.
P2/1G based their books on their topic ‘Air an Tuathanas’ (On the Farm) and P4/3G created imaginative stories about ‘Na Lochlannaich’ (The Vikings). The children were really inspired by the book-writing project and produced some excellent work.
P2 Viking Open Afternoon
Primary Two at Rhu Primary recently held an Open Afternoon with parents, to celebrate the completion of their Viking topic. Pupils enjoyed showcasing their learning, which included literacy, art and technology work. They also displayed their musical talents, performing Thor the Thunderer and Odin’s Daughters! Parents joined in with various activities including food tasting, internet research, interactive games, map work and decoding Viking runes. It was a very exciting end to a very successful topic!
The Great Escape at Rhu Primary
Primary 1 at Rhu lovingly made and decorated teddy bears, as part of their Toyland topic. The children were delighted with the results and couldn’t wait to take them home.
However, those teddies had other ideas and kept escaping. One day they just disappeared. Imagine the pupils’ surprise when their teddies turned up at ‘Helensburgh Toy Shop’. Fiona was happy to look after the teddies but was exhausted chasing after them and trying to serve customers at the same time.

THE BIG GREEN ADVENTURE
Pupils in P1-P7 at Kilcreggan Primary School recently entertained parents and friends with their wonderful production of The Big Green Adventure. The musical show had an eco message. Scenes and songs gave messages about recycling, being transport aware, switching off unneeded electrical appliances and caring for our environment. All classes participated in the song and action part of the show with P5-7 pupils taking on the speaking parts. Pupils amazed their audiences at both performances with their great acting. DGS pupil Shannon Brings Sunshine to Kirn Nursery
One of the four focuses (or capacities) of The Curriculum for Excellence is to encourage pupils to become effective contributors to their communities. What better way to do this than to volunteer some time to help out at a local nursery school. This is what Shannon Lyon, S5 pupil at Dunoon Grammar School and full time pupil in the learning centre, has been doing since August 2013.

Sponsored cycle at Small Isles
In the Easter holidays almost all the children from Small Isles Primary on Jura took part in a sponsored cycle ride from Craighouse to Lagg. It’s a seven and a half mile cycle with some challenging hills, and everyone managed to do it, even our Primary One person. It took two hours for everyone to get there.
Rhu Primary School Victorian Journey
Primary 6 pupils in Rhu took a journey back in time when they enjoyed a day of Victorian school activities.
The youngsters, who had been learning about the Victorian era, joined in the fun by dressing up in traditional costume for the day.
Bunessan Easter Fun Run
Children in the P5,6,7 class of Bunessan Primary School have been busy raising money to restore the local war memorial which stands just outside the playground. They decided to take part in the local Easter Fun Run and raised money by collecting from spectators. The children have been quite overwhelmed by the support they have received for this project and are well on the way to eventually exceeding their target. Their hard work and dedication will ensure that the memorial survives into the next century.
