P6&7 pupils from Luss Primary gave a presentation to the National Conference of the Rotary Club in Crieff Hydro Hotel on Saturday. The children were invited to speak to the Rotarians about their environmental work, saving the powan fish in Loch Lomond.
Powan are found only in Loch Lomond and Loch Eck.While their numbers are fine in Loch Eck, they have become almost extinct in Loch Lomond. This is because of a small fish,the Ruff, which was accidentally introduced into Loch Lomond in the 1980s and eats Powan eggs. Continue reading Luss Presentation

Tobermory P6/7, Renewable energies on Mull
Mr Finch from Mull and Iona Community Trust came to our class on 17th September to talk to us renewable energies on Mull and show us the Nissan Leaf.
Firstly Mr Finch judged our ‘car of the future’ competition. We had lots of ideas like solar powered, wind powered, hydro powered and biothermal cars. The winner was Finn’s Cow Pat Car. Mr Finch liked the idea of using the methane in cow pats to power a car and thought it would put cow pats to good use.
Felting at Benmore Gardens
On Thursday 5th September P5 and P7 spent an amazing day at Benmore Botanical Gardens with their teachers and support staff. On Friday 6th September P6/5 and P7/6 also enjoyed a fabulous day at Benmore. Cath and Katie from the Education Service in Edinburgh’s Botanical Gardens were the superb instructors during the visits. Each class got the fantastic opportunity to make felt, incorporating an image of a plant or greenery. These had been freshly picked from the gardens to provide inspiration for the felting project.
What a Buzz!
P7 pupils in Rhu are looking to achieve the John Muir award this term for discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing their work on bees and their local area. They made a great start to their project by visiting a local beekeeper. Fortunately, it was a lovely sunny day and the bees were out foraging for the last pollen and nectar of the season. What a good opportunity to spot the bees busy at work.
PRIMARY 6&7 VISIT MESOLITHIC DIG ON ISLAY
On Tuesday 27th August Primary 6&7 went on an archaeological dig to Rubha Port an t-Seilich on Islay because they are doing a topic on life in Mesolithic times. The dig was run By Professor Steven Mithin from Reading University and a team of archaeologists.

Interplanetary Pioneer – Fergus Glen-Lee
Fergus Glen-Lee from Oban High School has been invited to join Fuselab at Edinburgh University to plan life for future civilizations in the event of an evacuation of Earth.
Fergus saw the avert on SAL for the opportunity for young Scots to join the team made up of business and academia from North West European Communities. Fergus had to demonstrate his creative and divergent thinking to get through the selection process and has been chosen to spend a week at Edinburgh University.

Port Ellen Pre 5 Units Beautiful Butterflies
The children in Port Ellen Pre 5 unit have been very busy looking after some exciting new pets from our donated butterfly farm. The children transferred all the knowledge and skills that they have gained during our minibeast topic and used this to take care of our butterflies. We were all very excited when our tiny caterpillars arrived through the post. During the week they ate more and more and they grew very big and very fat – just like The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Total Green School Awards 2013
The pupils and staff at Lochdonhead Primary School are delighted to hear that they are the winners of the Totally Active category for Scotland in the Total Green School Awards 2013. Our entry was about all the work we have done in our school grounds over the last year. We had to decide what we wanted to do with our grounds, work out how to achieve it, and we have ended up with a ‘story glen’ based on an old Gaelic tale ‘Iolaire Loch Treig’.
Springwatch at small Isles
We now have seven very lively chicks who are preening and stretching their wings and legs ready to fly. Mum and Dad are still feeding everyone, but not as often – perhaps they are hoping to encourage the chicks to head off into the big, wide world. We hope that they fledge when we are all in school so we can watch them!
Campus Eco Schools Success
The Lochgilphead Joint Campus Eco Schools Committee have joined the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening and are reaping the benefits by reaching Level 3 of the organisations Benchmarking Scheme. This was achieved by providing evidence of pupil’s class work, putting a holiday maintenance scheme in place for the campus garden, growing a range of plants (see table by clicking HERE) adopting sustainable gardening practices, using appropriate signs and labels for seedlings & plants in the campus garden and finally showing the pupils in action using all of their gardening skills. Cardross Primary Green Day
The Cardross Primary Green Day took place last week. The event was planned by our Eco teacher Mrs Girling to incorporate the whole school focus this term on the Rainforest. The pupils were taking part in rainforest and eco themed activities all day. Some of the highlights were; Amazon Micro-Parks, Rainforest Story Sticks and Smelly Cocktails.
Mid Argyll Photo Competition Winner
The Nikon Digital Camera was won by Ruby-Jo Philips from Glassary Primary 2 with her photo of a snail. The judge, Matthew Boyle was most impressed with every aspect of the photo and had no hesitation in deciding it was the winner. Many thanks to all who took part in the competition..
Springwatch at Small Isles
Our chicks are keeping Mum and Dad busy feeding. They have started to grow feathers on their heads and they look like aliens. We are not sure whether one has died as we can only see six open beaks. They’re very interesting to watch. Mum doesn’t sit on them any more because she doesn’t have time to – they are taking lots of feeding.

Bee Day at Dunoon Primary School
Primary 5 arranged a School “Bee Day” to raise awareness of the need to support the bee population and to raise funds to plant bee friendly flowers and provide some seeds for each pupil in the school to plant in their garden. It was a great day with everyone dressing in yellow and black, a bee outfit or bright flower colours. Pupils sold homemade baking, badges, bookmarks and enjoyed singing bee songs and presenting powerpoints to the classes throughout the day. Continue reading Bee Day at Dunoon Primary School
S2 History pupils get the chance to dig up the past!
On Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd May a return visit of around forty S2 Lochgilphead High School History pupils took place at Dun Muirich medieval fort at Tayvallich to take part in an actual archaeological dig, thanks again to the generosity of Kate Moody of Kilmartin House Museum and Roddy Reagan, the archaeologist in charge . The weather was good over the two days, and the minibus swiftly took four runs back and forth to the site, accompanied again by either Mr Wire or Mr Kemp of the Social Subjects Department.

GARELOCHHEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL – Awesome Ardroy Adventures!!
Last week pupils from Garelochhead Primary went to Ardroy Outdoor Education centre, Lochgoilhhead for a residential trip.
Working towards their ‘John Muir’ award, they focussed on the adventurous discovery and exploration of wild places, and actively conserved areas of woodland.
Other outdoor activities included gorge walking, abseiling, night orienteering and negotiating their way through a labyrinth.

Achaleven’s Pop-Up Plant Stall
We have been busy growing plants from seed in the school garden and they have done so well we thought we would sell our extra ones! Thanks to Rosie at Connel Village Store, we had a pop-up plant stall on Friday outside the shop, where plants were available for sale (payment by donation to a box in the shop).
They are mostly tomato plants but there are a few pepper and cucumber plants as well.

Spring Watch at Small Isles
At the end of March Dyllan and Davina’s Grandad came and fitted our new bird box camera. We thought we were too late to get any birds nesting in it this year, so we did a challenge to research what species of bird might like to make their home in it, ready for next Spring. On Monday 20th April there was great excitement because we had a bluetit sitting in our box and seven eggs! Just as the children were coming into school this morning the eggs started to hatch, and as of 3.45pm when the children went home, there were five tiny chicks. Our very own Spring Watch!
Kilcreggan Primary School Visit Glasgow Science Centre
Our Primary 4, 5, 6 & 7 classes visited the Glasgow Science Centre on Wednesday 29th May and had a very exciting day. After spending the morning looking at exhibits they went in to the laboratory and learned all about how to extract DNA. Each child came back to school with a unique necklace containing a sample of their DNA!
