In 2011 CAST renovated and relaunched an important art collection held within our schools and every year we run a successful writing competition using the collection as inspiration. The competition for 2016 is now OPEN and we are delighted to announce it has continued support from Scottish Book Trust. There will be first, second and third prizes of books for pupils. The winning pupil’s school will also receive £250 worth of books. Winning pieces will be posted online as part of the Argyll Collection website and on SAL. This year’s theme is ‘Getting Up To Mischief’ and we are focussing on four paintings. These paintings are held within different Scottish collections and represent children at play. Kodu is an application developed by Microsoft which introduces young people to computer games design. The visual programming language allows students to design and build three-dimensional games. Kodu helps young people to learn the core concepts of computer science through a project approach which includes narrative writing, design, maths and programming skills.

The In-Reach/Out-Reach team at Parklands School in Helensburgh will be holding informal open afternoons from Monday 5th to Thursday 8th September from 3.30pm – 4.30pm.

I am delighted to be taking forward the role of Acting Head of Education in Argyll and Bute. As many of you know I have spent all of my educational career in Argyll and Bute and am strongly committed to ensuring our young people get the best opportunities they can. I came into Education as a Primary Teacher in 1982 wanting to make a difference for the young people in my class. My focus today is the same only it is now about making a difference for all of the young people in Argyll and Bute.

With lots of prizes to win and fun inspiring themes for nursery, lower and upper primary, secondary and special education schools we hope you enjoy looking at, talking about and finally making your own art. You can download details of each category, entry forms and applications for vouchers for free art materials or workshops from the categories on the website. All winning artworks will be framed and exhibited at the National Galleries of Scotland and feature in a colourful calendar posted to every school in Scotland. Technology 
Showcase – On Saturday 7 May 2016 around 300 primary pupils from across Helensburgh and Lomond attended a technology showcase event with parents.
The aim of the event was to help equip young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to turn computing ideas into concepts, showcase what can be created through technology and provide additional exciting computer science related learning opportunities.
Dunoon Primary held their prizegiving ceremony today at St John’s Church. The church was full of proud parents as the trophies were distributed to the pupils. The choir sang two songs to a delighted audience. Mrs Stewart gave her address speech to the crowd and spoke of the school year and all our fantastic achievements. The PTA gave out calculators and framed pictures of the P7 leavers dance and Mr Taylor of the Rotary Club gave out dictionaries to all the P7 pupils.
A fantastic sum of £1276.88 was raised for Cancer Research UK as a result of the Race for Life held last week. Children, staff, parents and grandparents all joined in for a memorable afternoon on Kinloch Green. We were very grateful to the Campbeltown branch of Tesco for donating all the bottles of water for the event. The Primary 7s helped by encouraging and running with younger classes.

On Thursday 23rd June 2016 Bowmore Primary School held a sponsored Race for Life event to raise money for Cancer Research UK. As well as the race, there was face painting, nail painting, ice lollies for sale and we dressed up in pink & blue. Each class set off running their laps around the football pitch. P1/2 did at least one lap, P3/4 did three laps and P5-7 did five laps. But everyone did more laps than they were asked!
Rosneath Primary School hall was “buzzing” on Friday 24th June – busy little bees preparing (children and adults) for our Community Event and it was very well supported as always.

On the 21st June 2016, 22 Classroom and Additional Support Needs Assistants received certificates for the SQA Professional Development Award (PDA) in Education Support Assistance in a ceremony held in the Loch Fyne Hotel, Inveraray.
Roslyn Redpath, Principal Educational Psychologist, presented the certificates on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council and congratulated the candidates on their hard work and commitment.

As part of her 90th Birthday celebrations, the Queen attended many functions and parties. Here at Rosneath Primary School, we took the opportunity to join in the celebrations with our very own Tea Party for Her Majesty. As you can tell by the faces (some of which had to be “scrubbed clean”) the whole School was very proud to come together to “devour” enthusiastically (but minding manners, of course) a lovely spread provided by Mrs Johnson (our Catering Supervisor) and her Staff.

Recently, as part of their R.M.E. Topic on Celebrations, P3/2 at Rosneath Primary School decided to make then send 90th Birthday Cards to the Queen. The children had great fun putting their own personal touch to their cards.
Never in their wildest dreams did they think the Queen would remember their cards out of all the millions that were sent.
Luss Primary School are the Scottish Champions of this year’s Total Green Award. Over the past five years Luss has won the Totally Clued-up Category three times and on a fourth occasion was awarded a Special Award created for them because their work was of such a high standard.
John Logie Baird Primary School and Pre Five Unit have been celebrating their success at the Scottish Education Awards 2016. They were delighted to be a top 3 finalist in the Learning through Technologies category at this year’s event. Judges from Education Scotland visited the school back in April and spoke to pupils, staff, parents and members of the community who were involved in their hugely successful Oscars Night and their innovative new Improving and Achieving report –
Inspired by the Team GB ‘Get Set for Rio’ challenge, Primary 7/6 started regular running in September to try to cover the distance of 9450 km from Tarbert to Rio de Janeiro before the Olympic Games start there this summer.
Easdale Primary school held a vey successful open afternoon on Wednesday
22nd. The whole school have been researching its history and have
contacted past pupils to find out where they are, what they are doing
and what memories they had of the school. They mapped where these people
now lived.They delved into its history through log books and old
registers, had past pupils visiting, learned about evacuees and the
island’s social history.
