Another busy week in P7a

This week has been very busy. We went to visit the Peel, took part in a touch rugby event and then watched the announcement of the Scottish Rugby World Cup Squad. It was a very wet afternoon, but we enjoyed it.

In Maths we have created multi digit multiplication and division sums and solved theย  Four Fours challenge. Next week we are looking at how to calculate area of non regular shapes, simplfying equivalent and non equivalent fractions and undertaking a problem solving challenge.

We started our research on Romero Britto and Brazil, taking notes on Britto’s life, completing a mapping exercise of South America and comparing our school day to that of a child in Sao Paulo.

We have now started our reading books and finished a comprehension exercise on global warming. Next week we will be writing a persuasive article on the impact that land use has on the Amazon Rainforest and Brazil.

Today we held our House Captains and Vice Captains elections. Well done to everyone who took part and those who were elected. Information on the winners is on the Springfield Twitter Feed.

Hoodies and ties are arriving today, however not until 2pm, so everyone will get theirs on Monday ๐Ÿ™‚

Have an amazing weekend.

Primary 6 – w/e 6th September 2019

This week in maths we have looked at formal methods of multiplication and division, with us all choosing to challenge ourselves and make our brains grow.

In PE we have developed our ball handling skills for basketball, playing games and completing drills and team activities.

We have decided on a theme for our assembly and begun to research facts and information on this.

In music we have begun to create a song, with instruments for our assembly, which is on the 20th September at 10am.

In science we created helicopters which showed the changes in energy that occur when they are launched – ask us about this!!

Homework has also been issued this week – due Tuesday and Wednesday.

Kind regards

Primary 6 and Mrs Kerr

Hello from P2A

It is P2Aโ€™s first post of the year! We have been busy bees since being back at school. Take a look at what we have been doing in class this week.

In Numeracy and Mathematics we have been learning all about symmetry. We discussed as a class what symmetry means, what this looks like in our classroom and the wider world. We have enjoyed creating symmetrical butterflies and making sure that they are the same on both sides. We also created symmetrical shape patterns. This is where we traced around a 2D shape, cut and folded it. We then created our own patterns in the shape using lots of different colours. Miss Muir was impressed with our effort and hard work that we took when making these.

In Literacy we have been revising the vowel digraphs โ€˜oiโ€™, โ€˜oyโ€™, โ€˜ooโ€™, โ€˜ewโ€™, โ€˜oaโ€™, โ€˜owโ€™. We have used our magnetic boards for sounding out words with these digraphs. The whole class are making a great effort in trying to think of their own words. Miss Muir didnโ€™t even think of some of the ones we came up with! Also we have been writing our own sentences with these words which we are proud of.

In P.E this week we had Mrs Reid on Wednesday and Miss Muir on Tuesday. We played some warm up games and learned some new stretches. In partners,ย  we practised our throwing and catching skills with different sized balls.

During story and milk we read a story called โ€˜A Tale of Two Beastsโ€™. In the story a little girl rescues a fox called Fang. She takes Fang home with her and creates a home for him out of a cardboard box. However Fang misses the deep dark wood so he escapes. This got us thinking how the girl could have made her home for Fang better to stop him from escaping, so we created our own homes out of cardboard boxes. This is what we madeโ€ฆ

Thank you for reading our post. We canโ€™t wait to see what next week brings!

P4Aโ€™S GREAT WEEK!๏Š

This week in Maths we did a check-up so Ms McAlpine knows how we are doing in maths and some of it was easy and some of it was hard. (hard hard!)

In literacy this week we learned that alliteration is when the first letter of each word starts with the same letter like Sneaky Sammy snake slithered. We had fun making up our own alliteration phrases.

In Health and Wellbeing we talked and asked question about each other.

In P.E. we did team games like Marco polo and it was fun!

The SSPCA came in on Monday to talk about the work they do looking after animals and our responsibilities.

Thank you for reading P4Aโ€™S blog

First Full week in P4B

Our week started off with a visit from the S.S.P.C.A. We enjoyed playing board games finding animal homes and then we built owls and made them move. We had great fun.
In Numeracy, we have started our new jotters and have been revising numbers between 100 and 1000 and beyond. Looking at numbers before and after in 10’s, 50’s and 100’s. Our presentation in our jotters was very impressive.
In Literacy, we created an “Alphabet of Stuff”. This was related to our class novel”Fing” and we used our imagination to make up a list of things that our character Myrtle might want or thinks she might want!! Some great and funny ideas. We have also been looking at alliteration and how effective it can be, if used in our writing. We thought of some super sentences and some sensational short stories!!
We have drawn designs of our buildings and then we stuck them onto boxes to make 3D buildings. Great detail and they have made an interesting display outside our classroom.
In PE we have begun to learn the skills required to play badminton and really enjoyed it.
In RME with Mrs.Beganie, we have begun to learn about the religion of Judaism. So a very busy first full week. Thank you to those who came to “Meet the Teacher.” It was nice to see both old and new faces. Hope you’re all enjoying the weekend. Photos to follow.
Love from 4B and Mrs.Burton

Bunnies, Ants and Tennis in P1a

What a great first full week in P1 for everyone. This week we were very busy getting used to our new routines and activities.

On Monday we had 2 rabbits (battery powered) visit us from the SSPCA. We had to learn all about how to take care of them and did a role play scenario of taking rabbits to the vets. We really enjoyed learning how to hold rabbits properly and being vets!

This week we started our first sounds ‘a’ and ‘t’. We loved the jolly phonics songs of ants on my arm, and when I watch the tennis match. Everyone manged to do their first piece of writing too where we practised the letter formation of a and t. Mrs Gordon was very impressed. We also used the magnetic boards to make our first word – at.

In numeracy we learnt all about numbers 0 and 1. The stories of greedy zero and penguin one helped along the way. We worked hard at forming these numbers too and went on a number hunt looking for them in the classroom.

We did some art this week and made a great display about the three little pigs, this was linked to our construction theme. We have a tuff tray where we can try to build houses out of bricks, straw and sticks for the 3 little pigs.

Happy weekend from Mrs Gordon and P1a.

P5 Weekly Blog

We’ve had another busy week as the children settle into P5. Here’s what we’ve been up to and what we are looking forward to next week…

Health and Wellbeing

We continued working on our movement skills and spatial awareness in P.E this week. The size of ball increased as the session went on. We began by following hand-clap patterns and sequences with a tennis ball to improve our hand-eye coordination before introducing the basketballs and working with a partner. We tested our reflexes against different opponents before mirroring their movements and varying the ways in which we exchange the ball.

This week, we were also lucky enough to have a surprise visit from the SSPCA. We were spoken to about the importance of being kind towards animals and heard stories about some unusual call-outs made by staff. The session finished with a coding exercise where we were tasked with building a programmable owl which flapped its wings and moved its head. Unfortunately we weren’t able to make Oscar fly…

Technologies

In the upper school this term we have a particular focus on building and construction, mimicking that going on around the school currently as our toilets are upgraded. We’ve got real-life materials, Spheros, K’nex and Lego workstations to choose from. On Wednesday afternoon we tried some K’nex challenge cards in small groups and created our own unique designs. We had strands of DNA, noughts and crosses, cars and even a wheelbarrow!

Literacy and English

The genre for writing this week was creative and imaginative. Mr Logan introduced our word bank and recapped on the important features of a story before showing us an image of Japan. Our stories had to use this setting but the characters and plot were left to us. The standard of writing was incredibly high and Mr Logan was impressed with the ambitious range of VCOP in our work.

Problem Solving

We’ve been taking part in varied problem solving and team building exercises over the first couple of weeks to improve our teamwork and communication skills. Our final challenge of the week was the classic ‘Egg Drop Challenge’. All 8 groups were given a minimal amount of resources including tape, newspaper, string and a plastic cup to create a protective capsule for their egg. Out of 8 groups, 4 managed to keep their egg intact after it was thrown into the air in the back playground on Friday. You’ll see their proud wee faces below, well done everyone!

Achievements

Finally, a couple of achievements from this week to mention…

  • O and S have been attending gymnastics sessions in Linlithgow and received a number of medals for their efforts! Well done girls, Mr Logan is really proud of you both!
  • E has been demonstrating her creativity at home, constructing Mt. Fuji and a Japanese building using Lego. Super job, E!

Coming Up

  • 2.9.19 – Japan IDL learning context begins
  • 4.9.19 – Swimming assessment at Xcite Lgow, leave 12.15 and return 15.15
  • 13.9.19 – ‘Responsible’ assembly
  • 16.9.19 & 17.9.19 – Holidays
  • 18.9.19 – Liaise with Leadership from 16.00-17.00

It was great to meet you all on Wednesday evening, have a relaxing weekend!

P5 and Mr Logan

P7B’s First week back

Hi everyone, this week has been a great first week in P7B!

On Monday we did our spelling test to see what level we’re at in our spelling. We also did our leadership talks explaining what role we wanted. We made our envelopes for the time capsule and measured our feet size, hand size and height! (by NG and SP)

On Tuesday we did Daily Rigour.ย  This gave us quite a challenge.

This week we learned about the work of Romero Britto.ย  A Brazillian Pop artist.ย  We had a go at recreating his work in class.

We created our ” Kindness Wall” this week. The purpose of which is to send out positive and encouraging notes to our peers. To boost self esteem, we talked about how we see ourselves and how others see us.ย  Some of us were surprised to know that there are personal attributesย  which we neglect to appreciate.ย  Our friends help us appreciate these through their messages.

Primary 6 – w/e 30th August 2019

In maths we have looked at how we can exercise our maths brains. We used youcubed to help us. We found different ways of making numbers using 4 fours. Ask us how we did this!!!ย  We also completed the ‘make one cut’ challenge, discovering that some shapes could be created, while others couldn’t. This also helped to develop our resilience and growth mindset.

In Science, we have begun to look at energy,ย  talking about fossil fuels and different types of energy.

In PE we have begun to develop our basketball skills, focusing on dribbling the ball.

In art we explored Pointillism, creating landscapes using this technique.

We have begun to set targets for Primary 6, thinking about what we are confident with and the areas of the curriculum we would like to develop further.

We created an imaginative story, using a picture to help us with our ideas.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Primary 6 and Mrs Kerr
