Today some of our learners attended the ASN Football Festival at Broxburn Athletic FC. They had a fantastic time, working on kicking and dribbling skills, and especially enjoyed playing a a giant game of hungry hippos!

Duntarvie Round Up – End of Term!
Another fun and very busy term in Duntarvie !
There’s been a big emphasis on keeping our bodies moving this term and learning new skills as we do so. Everyone has either been out at swimming to Bathgate Xcite, or in the hydrotherapy pool this term, and some of us have been at both. Being in the water is so beneficial for our bodies and you can see from the photos how happy it makes us!
In the senior phase, we’ve been out in the community lots, working towards our “Sport and Leisure” ASDAN awards with Louise, with some fabulous experiences including polybat, bowling and golf. It’s been brilliant to hear all how our young people have been developing skills and understanding more and more about these games each time.
As part of our “Hobbies and Interests SQA”, we’ve had the chance to enjoy some of our favourite experiences while achieving our awards. One pupil has even been out at the gym! Another has been raising his game on the Xbox, while another has been knitting some gorgeous scrunchies, and one pupil has been acting as school librarian!
Our S6 pupils have also been expressing their bodies regularly out at Musically Active Dudes with Marcia and John, meeting up with some old friends from Beatlie and making some new connections too. Social group has also been a great opportunity to do this, and we’ve had plenty of dancing here too, as well as a visit from Potter Around and Callum from Cool Creatures. Our S6 pupils have also been working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards both out in the community and at school too.
In school, Charan from Dance Namaste has been keeping many of our Duntarvie pupils’ bodies both active and relaxed. We’ve shown some super engaged interaction with Charan. One of our pupils has also been using the Innowalk regularly, which has been a brand new experience, and she’s doing so well with it!
Some of us have been attending PE groups with friends from different classes, and those who haven’t yet, soon will. Again, some lovely progression of skills here.
Cafe Duntarvie has kept the staff of Beatlie well fed this term, as part of our school Enterprise project and another SQA award. We’ve been learning about taking orders, preparing food, delivering orders and handling money. We’re very popular with all the adults currently, and it’s been a great chance to work on our communication skills and interacting with the whole school community!
Celebrations across the school have been a big part of this term too – we had a ball during celebrations for world book day, science week and comic relief. It’s so lovely to come together as a school on special days!
Other highlights have included getting the chance to meet and care for the theraponies and build up confidence around them, Paracise, fun with our wonderful Clown Doctors, being involved in the cross schools Growing Together project, choir, and various cross class communication groups to name but a few …
Easter week is also shaping up to be a fun one, with a big egg hunt and cosy movie afternoon on the cards, with our friends from Ochiltree!
We wish all our families a restful, and enjoyable Easter break.
Love Team Duntarvie!x
Boccia & Curling Festival
Last week 3 of our pupils attended the ASN Boccia and Curling Festival run by Active Schools with the college students at West Lothian College.
We took part in lots of different stations to develop our throwing and rolling skills, and had lots of fun!
Winter term in Hopetoun
What a busy term we have had in Hopetoun class, there has been lots of lovely learning on display as well as lots of fun activities. This term we have been learning all about “my favourite sound” and we put quite a few of these together into our Christmas show with recording of some of these sounds like explosions, giggles, and different types of music. We have also enjoyed drama this term where our naughty horses have caused chaos! We have also been out and about to see lots of different Christmas lights and listen to Christmas sounds. We even went into chocolate production! We can’t wait to see what learning we can do next term. Have a very Merry Christmas!
Summer term in Lomond
What a fantastic end to the first year in our new school. We have had so much fun exploring everywhere. The weather has been a little bit nicer so we have made the most of being able to get out and about. We have had some very exciting walks and we even met a tractor with a very friendly driver who stopped to let us come close and see his tractor.
We have had lots of fun inside school as well, with our teddy bears picnic and clown doctors party both happening on nice sunny days. Even when it has not been as nice, we have still managed to make the most of our lovely new gardens, who knew that a poly tunnel was a great place to have a dance!
We finished our term with a lovely trip to Lochore Meadows country park where we had great fun in the play park then we had our picnic lunch, we even managed to have an ice cream before getting on the bus and coming home.
We hope everyone has a lovely summer and comes back to school looking forward to all the adventures we have in store for next year.
Summer Music
It has been a busy Summer term in Music. In particular, secondary classes have focused on the culmination of a year-long project, with some of our young people working towards SQA National 1 Producing a Sound (alternative context).
For this, we have been choosing instruments and playing them correctly, then using our skills to tell a musical story. The story was a traditional tale from the Borders, that of Tam Lin and how Janet saved him from the Queen of the Fairies in the enchanted forest.
Ochiltree and Duntarvie had been working separately on the skills, but this term they came together to create the sounds. We had a star guest as Carol Robbie came back to narrate the story.
It was a great success and has opened up options for other musical stories together and with others. We will certainly we doing this again, hopefully at a time that will be easier for friends and families to participate.
Meanwhile, primary classes have been having fun continuing to choose favourite songs to sing and play.
Teddy Bears Picnic
What a lovely day we had for our teddy bears picnic, thankfully the rain stayed off and we were able to enjoy some fun and games in the garden with our furry friends!
Term 3 in Duntarvie 23-24
Well Spring is here (hopefully when the rain stops!) And what a quick term it has been in the senior class. We have all been busy working on our individual SQA awards including completing a charity upcycle project as well as S6 finishing bronze Duke of Edinburgh volunteering to organise and run a coffee morning.
We have particularly enjoyed opportunities to experience and participate in lots of different groups this term. Just check out our photos:
- Assembly
- Clown Doctors with Hearts & Minds
- Exercise Group at Polbeth Hub with Heidi McDonald Fitness
- Musically Active Dudes with MUSAC at Crofthead Centre
- Archery with Paul of No-Limits Sports Club
- Multi-sensory
- Music appreciation with Chloe and Callum from Live Music Now
We hope you have a wonderful Easter break and are well rested for a busy last term.
Spring term in Lomond
What a busy term we have had! some of our highlights have been swimming for some of our children as well as continuing to explore our new school and gardens. The new willow sculptures are very exciting.
We have continued to enjoy activities like visiting the multi-sensory room and some of us are getting very good at activating the interactive floor. We have enjoyed activities like our Burns day ceilidh and having two cafes this term has meant plenty of opportunities for cooking and baking as well as seeing lots of people coming into the school.
We continue to enjoy a weekly visit from the clown doctors and our cross class PE groups have been a big success. It’s always nice to be able to see friends from other classes.
We are looking forward to the summer term when hopefully the weather will be a bit nicer and we will be able to get out a bit more.
Have a lovely Easter holiday and we look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.
Hopetoun News
This term has been absolutely jam packed with fun, it’s been lovely to welcome so many family and friends into school to celebrate different events with us and we’ve been enjoying lots of opportunities to get out and about. Some of our favourites events this term have been the Burn’s ceilidh, Science week and Storytelling week where we’ve had the best time joining all our friends from across the whole school to take part in lots of different activities, anything that involves music and dance is a definite hit for Hopetoun!! We’ve also been doing lots of work exploring and promoting our Rights Respecting and Global Goals work, here’s just a small selection of what we’ve been up to!
Hope you all have a lovely Easter break, none of us can quite believe that we’ve reached this time of year already!!
