Winter term in Hopetoun class

Wow, what a quick and busy term we have had in Hopetoun. We have made the most of being able to go on the minibusses so we have been to Dobbies and the centre to see all the Christmas lights and listen to the Christmas music, we even got to smell Christmas at Dobbies! We have had a visit from the pantomime and we have enjoyed going to see the special visitors in our garden. We have enjoyed playing with the snowballs but these ones are a bit warmer than real ones.

The term has not all been about Christmas though- we had great fun at our MATP event and it was very encouraging to have so much support. It was lovely being able to show off all the new skills we have been learning. Some of us have been to swimming at Bathgate and we have even started horse riding at riding for the disabled at Ravelrig.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year!

Glendevon end of term!

What a busy term it has been! Our topic this term has been Emergency Services.  All our children have enjoyed exploring the Topic box.  We have had Doctors, Nurses, Fire fighters, Ambulance drivers and Police officers.

Tommy favoured being a policeman and enjoyed looking at himself in the mirror! Hira happily explored the police cars and fire engines while Angel loved looking though all the doctors’ bags and trying out some of the equipment.  Peter liked listening to everyone’s heart beats with the stethoscope and also enjoyed the matching game. Hafsa and Matthew both enjoyed dressing up as well and they both found it funny being part of the role play with members of staff too.

This term we have been working really hard on our MATP activities each week with Louise  and we all did really well at our performance in the hall for all the parents and carers.  We have all been learning new skills and we look forward to extending these skill next term too.

We have all been enjoying outdoor play in various forms this term too.  Peter has been doing really well on his bike and working on navigating some road signs such as stop and go.  Tommy has been having a blast playing with the football, passing it to a member of staff and scoring goals. Angel enjoys exploring the playground and loves to spin on the basket swing and has also been working on bike skills  too. Matthew and Hafsa have been using the drive deck to get around by using a switch to make it start and stop. Hira has been using her walker outside at times but also likes going out in her wheelchair and seeing everyone and using some of the equipment and loves singing songs on sunny winters day in the colour tunnel.

Glendevon went for a day at the football too to celebrate Scotland progressing in the Fifa World cup.  We had the smells of the grass, the strip to wear,  noises of the crowd cheering and of course the goals themselves.

We have had lots of different art activities to do this terms too, our themes have been around fireworks, Remembrance day, our topic – Emergency services and Christmas.  This have given us the opportunity to explore a variety of materials much as paint, glue, pens, and lots of glitter! We also had the Clown Doctors in to help us during one of our art sessions – you can imagine how much glitter that day!

We have been spending time exploring games and stories in different group settings and enjoyed some pop up pirate and also exploring the immersive 3 little pigs story as part of storytelling day across the school.

We have all had individual tasks that we have been working on throughout our week and we  have been doing really well.  Some of us have had hydrotherapy, horse riding, swimming, Innowalk, music therapy and rebound to mention just a few of the exciting things we have been up to. We have enjoyed sessions with the clown doctors individually and also as a group too and some of us have had sessions with Charran as well.

We have also been in full Christmas mode from November with Tommy starting us off by signing for Jingle bells to be sung most days! We have been Christmas crafting and preparing for our show and parties too. We are looking forward to a well earned rest over the Christmas break. We hope everyone enjoys the festivities and we look forward to the new term ahead in 2026!!

Term 2 in Glendevon

Sorry we are a bit late putting our review of term 2 on the blog and hope that all our families and friends had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Glendevon enjoyed all of the additional festive experiences including the performance, parties, Christmas garden and winter musical parade.

As always we have been working hard throughout term 2 and continue to use our multi-sensory space for a wide variety of purposes including:

  • to explore relaxation
  • to immerse ourselves in our topic story (which this term has included some of the beautiful items made through exploring materials in art time)

  • songs and singing utilising pupils different communication styles and methods

We hope to put together a wee video showcasing all the ways that we use the 4D room for the end of the year to share with all our parents.

Glendevon took on the roles and responsibilities of our facilities management team (Calum, John & Sandy) for International Children’s day and made sure pupil’s got their lunches, ensured paths were cleared and safe to use and daily school checks for security were carried out.

Glendevon’s eco representative has been hard at work in whole school groups throughout term 2 and focused on smaller garden spaces for Winter planting.

Glendevon boys have been exploring science concepts in messy science linked to our fashion and materials topic including; what materials to make our clothes from  and what would happen to different materials when placed in water.  Skills of predicting, showing preferences, retesting theories were all on display – brilliant work boys.

We are all ready for another fun filled term.

Winter term in Hopetoun

What a busy term we have had in Hopetoun class, there has been lots of lovely learning on display as well as lots of fun activities. This term we have been learning all about “my favourite sound” and we put quite a few of these together into our Christmas show with recording of some of these sounds like explosions, giggles,  and different types of music. We have also enjoyed drama this term where our naughty horses have caused chaos! We have also been out and about to see lots of different Christmas lights and listen to Christmas sounds. We even went into chocolate production! We can’t wait to see what learning we can do next term. Have a very Merry Christmas!

Unique Fundraising Café

Thank you again for the wonderful support you all gave our S6 pupil in fundraising for the charity Unique and helping him to progress on his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh journey.

These are just some of the photos from the event and thank you again to all the children, staff, parents, carers, family members, friends of Beatlie and community groups who attended or donated for such a great cause.

Craig (Chief Operating Officer) at Unique also thanked Luca ‘Goodness me Luca, that’s absolutely amazing! £900 is incredible and we are so grateful to you all for your wonderful support. Unique is a small charity and we can only exist because of fundraising like yours… it means we can be there to help and support families when they need us most.’

Term 3 in Duntarvie

In Duntarvie class we have been very busy learning out in the community and have created some videos of our favourite things we have been experiencing and participating in this term – hope you enjoy them.

We are looking forward to getting to explore further on our bikes next term and making the most of the lovely weather (fingers crossed). We are also planning to get back to check on all our berry, fruit and vegetable plants at the community garden.

Have a lovely Easter break.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight 2023 is all about spreading a simple message: making the small switch to Fairtrade supports producers in protecting the future of some of our most-loved food and the planet.

Did you know?

Coffee, bananas and chocolate could soon be much more difficult to buy.

Climate change is making crops like these harder and harder to grow. Combined with deeply unfair trade, communities growing these crops are being pushed to the brink.

But here’s the good news.

More people choosing Fairtrade means extra income, power and support for those communities.

By making the small switch to Fairtrade, we can all support producers in protecting the future of some of our most-loved food and the planet.

Share The Love

This week Beatlie have been using their imagination and hope for the future and both experienced and participated in the campaign #SharetheLove for Climate Change.

Please have a look at our children at work and share the message to help Save our Planet for our future children.

Autumn Term Music in Beatlie

In Music this term, we had fun once more sharing and playing music together with our friends.

One of the focus points across the school has been making choices in music. In Ochiltree and Duntarvie the children have been exploring genre, from disco to indie and rock, with more to come after the holidays. In mixed groups doing ASDAN and NQs, they selected from a range of music on switches and then chose instruments to play along with the selection, including drums and electric guitars. It was surprising to find out who are the secret rock and rollers in the classes!

In Primary and Lammermuir, we have been choosing from a range of nursery rhymes and instruments. The Pentland children had great fun deciding whether songs should be loud, quiet, fast and slow. At Halloween The Hairy Scary Castle  song made a return, with all the spooky sounds inside, which the children always enjoy.

Across the school we continue to have opportunities for individuals to have short Music as Therapy sessions that allows an opportunity to focus on the particular needs of some of the children.  While this is different from Music Therapy with Aisling, we do confer and ideas overlap. Importantly, it is an opportunity for the children to express themselves through music away from distractions.

We ended the term with music for the Christmas show, quite a change after the last few years, with lots of creative ideas. Next year, we will continue to have fun with new and familiar songs alike, and also take time to use music for wellbeing and to celebrate Scotland as we head to Burns Night.
