Harvest Cafe and Foodbank

Last week we celebrated harvest time by hosting a cafe for all our friends and families.  There were lots of visitors. The pupils made some delicious autumn treats to share with everyone. There was also a collection for the foodbank and a raffle. In total we made £134 and also had lots of donations of tins and packets of food. The secondary pupils are looking forward to visiting the shops to spend the money buying other essential items for the foodbank. Great work everyone!

Elmer

Our topic is Elmer the Elephant this term.  We have been doing lots of fun activities linked to the book.  We read an interactive version of the story and all the children enjoyed feeling the animals and using the switch.

We have done some messy play activities with colourful rice, ice cubes and pom poms! Everyone explored the different textures and colours really well. In art we made our very own Elmer using milk cartons and tissue paper, we also used colourful paint in lots if ways to make some wonderful pieces of art. We explored paint, pens and crayons in theses activities.

We did a little science experiment with skittles and watched all the colours spreading around the plate and we played with coloured ice cubes and watched the colour mixing as the melted too! We have been exploring colour in our colour group too, the children enjoyed choosing different items to explore in this group.

What a fun topic this has been!

Music Autumn 2023

This term we have focused on making choices in Music. Lammermuir joined Hopetoun for some fun for Hairy Scary Castle, first choosing spooky sounds from switches for Halloween and then using symbols to select animals to sing about for Old McDonald’s Farm. Pentland also made musical choices with instruments and symbols and appreciated movement and relaxation.

In Lomond the children greatly enjoyed coming together, singing nursery rhymes and  playing along with instruments. Sometimes this could be up tempo or more relaxed, depending on the needs of the day.
Glendevon focused on our regular routines, structure, and exploring instruments, including playing along on wooden instruments and dancing to a percussion track by Moondog – an American improvisational composer and performer.
Duntarvie worked towards their SQAs by playing different ranges of instruments for different moods and textures, such as tuned instruments in A minor or wooden instruments. This is to work towards a project in 2024 with Ochiltree, who followed similar lessons.
All the classes enjoyed some Song Massage with All the Leaves and then All the Snow as we got to December. The children had a great time moving to some Christmas songs and playing along to Jingle Bells. In case things felt too busy, we also had some sensory music time, taking some time to relax while exploring instruments to gentle music with subdued lighting and festive lights.

Lammermuir Term 2

This term in Lammermuir we have been busy celebrating lots of different events – From Children in Need to St Andrew’s day, World Children’s Day to Christmas.  We have taken part in cooking and baking activities, arts and crafts activities and some relaxing activities.

We hope you all have a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year!

From everyone in Lammermuir

Music Term 1

This term we have had fun settling into our new space in Music. Some of the lessons, the1-1  and small group sessions have taken place in the new GP room while other lessons have been taking place in the classrooms.

Lammermuir have sociably been joining Hopetoun in their classroom and have had fun choosing nursery rhymes to sing together. Lomond and Glendevon had more relaxed afternoon lessons to meet the children’s needs at that time of the day.

Pentland used the giant scrunchie to sing about The Great Big Turnip at the Bottom of the field and it became a big favourite. Tommy and Matthew found it hilarious when the different characters shouted for help and that the mouse had the biggest muscles.

All of the Primary classes also enjoyed the The Wheels on the Bus. This turned into something bigger, with everyone taking turns choosing  the different things that are on the bus from a range of choices on cards. The result was like a different remix of the song each time as the order kept changing.

As we approached Scarecrow Festival time, all of the Primary classes of course enjoyed singing the old favourite Dingle Dangle Scarecrow.

In Secondary, the groups focused on playing tuned percussion instruments to rock backing tracks and there has been lots of interaction and engagement, which bodes well as we head into a musical project together. More will be revealed in due course!

Lammermuir -Term 1

We have loved settling into our new ELC this term.  You can see from the smiling faces in the photos that our children have been enjoying exploring the different areas of the school, both indoors and in the playground.  The children have been working extremely hard on important skills like playing and developing their independence using switches, benches and walkers.  So far we have shared the Very Hungry Caterpillar story and made lots of butterfly pictures, made our own scarecrow for our first cafe in the new school and have enjoyed lots of sensory art work using items such as shells, pine cones and twigs.  We hope everyone has a lovely holiday and a well earned rest.

Lammermuir – Term 1

Lammermuir have had a busy time since starting back in August.  We have welcomed two new pupils to our class.  We have been exploring different textures for messy play – some weeks we have even made our own mixtures during cooking groups and then played with it during messy play.  We were lucky to have a visit from Calum and his Cool Creatures – our learners loved feeling all the different animals that came to visit.  One individual has been working on mark making skills and has been independently drawing on the easel and on paper when they have their chair tray on.  Another has been communicating likes and dislikes through their facial expressions and body language, they are very good at showing us the things they enjoy as their whole face lights up!  Our newest learner just started with us at the end of the term, they are settling in really well and we are looking forward to getting to know them better.  So far they have shown us that they enjoy singing counting songs and exploring our hat bag.
