Another Fun Filled Week in P6! w.b. 24.01.22

P6 have had another fun filled busy week! Keep reading to find out more.

  • Maths- We have been learning about factors and primes. We know that a factor is a number that divides into another number evenly (with no remainders). We also investigated prime and composite numbers and enjoyed lots of active tasks to develop our understanding.
  • Literacy- We have been working on our Literacy Circle skills this week and developing our skills for each job in the Circle. This has helped us to really develop our understanding of what we have read. In Writing, we have been working on poetry. We worked in trios to collaborate on some short poems by looking at a picture. We then created lists of adjectives, adverbs and verbs that we felt went along with each picture. We used our lists to create our poems- we really enjoyed this task and felt that it made us more confident in our poetry writing. We also enjoyed a live Burns Day event, hearing readings from some brand new children’s books inspired by the man himself!
  • HWB- In PE, we have been working on our fitness skills. We completed the ‘bleep test’ and are very proud to say that one of us bet the school record with an outstanding score of 152! We have also been thinking about friendship this week and have been working hard to focus on following the rules when playing games.
  • RERC- In RE, we have been learning about St Paul. We know that he was born as Saul and that at first, when he heard about Christians believing that Jesus was God’s Son he felt very angry until he was blinded by a light from the sky on his way to Damascus and Jesus told him to stop hurting Christians.
  • Science- We have continued to learn about light. This week, we looked at reflectors and discussed which materials made the most successful reflectors and why. We discovered reflectors work best when they have a smooth surface.
  • Social Studies- We have been researching European landmarks this week. We know that they can be categorised into three categories: historical, cultural and geographical. We enjoyed working in pairs to research some landmarks from European holiday destinations.
  • Expressive Arts- This week in Art, we created line drawings of European landmarks. We chose a landmark and used Google Images to search for a reference image to help us with our drawing. We then went over our pencil sketch with a handwriting pen and added depth, light and shade using a technique called cross-hatching. We then added some more light and shade by wetting some of the cross-hatching with a paintbrush and dragging the ink to create tone.

P6 Start the New Term With a Bang! w.b. 10.01.22

Primary Six have begun the new year and the new term with a bang! Keep reading to see more of what we have learned this week.

  • Maths- We have been learning to multiply and divide numbers by 10,100 and 1000. We discovered that the number of zeros in the number we divide and multiply by gives us a clue about how many places the digits in our numbers move to the left and right. We enjoyed completing active games to apply our knowledge and skills.
  • Literacy- This week we have completed active spelling tasks to help us learn our new –gh pattern. We enjoyed completing a Scots word challenge on Wednesday where we worked in pairs to guess the meaning of some Scots words, we will then use this as our glossary to help us complete some Scots Writing next week. In Grammar, we have been revising the use of commas, both in a list and to add extra information to our sentences. We have also continued to practise our cursive script.
  • H&WB- We have continued our Zones of Regulation learning and this week we created a line graph to help us plot our Zones throughout one day. This was useful for us to reflect on our feelings and we then had a discussion as to why we felt like we were in a certain zone at a given time. Most of us started in the blue zone as we feel tired when we first get to school! In PE, we have been working on fitness, completing the Daily Mile as well as completing a range of circuits with equipment and body movements- we have really enjoyed this!
  • RERC- We have been learning about sacrifices that people from the Bible have made and reflected on sacrifices we may have made in our own lives. This links us to our learning in the Pope Francis Faith Award where we have been learning about the Gift of Piety.
  • Social Studies- This week we started our new topic, ‘Exploring Europe’, we have focused on the geography of the continent this week. We were set a challenge to plot key countries on a map which we found challenging. We had brilliant fun completing a Kahoot! quiz to identify countries of Europe on a map.
  • Science- We have begun to look at our new block on Light. We watched a video to give us an overview of our new topic and created a KWL grid in our jotters which helped us to have a say in what we want to learn, what we already know and activities we would like to do to aid our learning.
  • Expressive Arts- In Art, we have been learning about textiles. We have been focusing on tartan and have learned about its history, what materials the fabric is made from and then we used our knowledge of shape, colour and pattern to design our own tartan. Some of us used our research skills to see if our families already had a tartan and we had a go at recreating that instead.

A Busy Week in P6! w.b.01.11.21

P6 have been hard at work this week- keep reading to find out more!

  • Maths- We have been learning about time this week. We know how to convert times into 12 and 24 hour times, we have also learned how to use an empty number line to calculate durations of time. This is a strategy and a skill we can use in our own lives now we know how! We have been practising the partitioning strategy in our Number Talks.
  • Literacy- We have been working on our Reading Skills. We used our reading books and each group worked on a different skill to help us understand what we have read. In Writing, we have been learning about the structure and purpose of a recount. We had a go at writing our own recounts about Halloween.  We have been practising our cursive script by writing a fact file about ourselves.
  • HWB- In PE, we have been learning tennis skills. We were playing ralleys to practise our backhand and forehand passes. We have continued our learning on Zones of Regulation and we enjoyed playing Bingo to recognise facial expressions that emotions can give us.
  • Spanish- In Spanish, we have been learning our colours. We can also ask each other what  colours we like as well as ones we love, dislike and hate.
  • Topic- We have learned what the phases of the moon are this week. We know that the moon’s phases run for 28 days and that is where the concept of months came from. We had to complete a diagram to show the phases of the moon in its 28 day cycle.  We also enjoyed creating loop cards to test each other on our Space knowledge so far!
  • RERC- On Monday, we celebrated All Saints Day with a Mass lead by Father Jeremy.
  • Art- We followed a tutorial to create a fireworks picture. We had to use our listening skills as well as technical skills like folding to create our picture. We also painted pebbles with an eco theme for our COP26 school path.

A Busy But Fun Week in P6! w.b. 13.09.21

P6 have had a great week with lots of new learning and activities. Keep reading to find out more.

  • Maths- We have been learning about negative numbers. We know that the further away a negative digit is from zero, the less value it has. We have learned about negative numbers through a worksheet comparing two numbers and finding the difference between them. We also enjoyed playing games with our maths groups to learn from each other.  In Number Talks, we have been learning to use the friendly number strategy.
  • Literacy- We completed a comprehension task on internet safety this week, we marked a peer’s work and gave them feedback on how they can improve. We then looked at and created posters about internet safety. We have been learning about similes and metaphors this week, creating some of our own.
  • HWB- We have completed our Leadership sessions with Ross, our Active Schools’ Co-Ordinator. We enjoyed these a lot! We have completed the Daily Mile this week which we are enjoying taking part in. With Mr Muldoon, we have been working on our basketball skills. We put our leadership skills into action yesterday, helping P1-7 in the hula hut competition.
  • RERC- We have been learning about Moses and the Israelites, we created a timeline about Moses’ life and we discussed the ways that God communicated with Moses. We wrote parayers asking God to always be with us.
  • Expressive Arts- We linked our art to our class novel, ‘Wonder’. We first drew a self-portrait in pen, in the style of the front cover. In the background, we wrote precepts, which we have heard in the novel, we then coloured these in bright colours.
  • Science- We started of Space this week, we thought of what we already know, what we want to learn and how we want to learn about space. We wrote these on post-its which we have displayed in the classroom.
