We got a big surprise after lunch today to find lots of dinosaur footprints leading from Mrs Macdonald’s class into Mrs Baty’s class. The footprints were all different sizes but had one thing in common, three claws ! This could only mean one thing, they belonged to a T-Rex. We asked our baby dinosaurs, Georgosaurus and Rory (the baby T-Rexes who hatched out of the eggs in our class a few weeks ago) if they had seen anything. It turned out that their mummies had paid them a quick visit during our lunch break to check up on them. Phew !!! We were so glad that we didn’t see them, they are carnivores !
We put the footprints to good use, measuring them with cubes. Some measured 27 cubes, others were 13 cubes long. We also measured our own footprints and compared sizes. We also participated in lots of other dinosaur activities. Here we are busy at work and play.

However , Raqab receives this week’s award for being a super team player. He is always helpful around the class and caught my eye this week as he helped a friend to tidy up. Well done Raqab !
Primary 1a and 1b have had a couple of very exciting afternoons ! Prof. D. Inosaur left us all a note saying that there were dinosaur fossils buried somewhere in our school ! Well, as you can imagine this caused great excitement amongst the children. Where could they be ? And what is a fossil ? Luckily for us, our kind professor told us in his letter all about fossils and he left us clues to find the fossils.
Our clues led us outside. We found a spade in our playground and started digging. Just as he had said, we found lots and lots of dinosaur fossils ! These were so cool. We had a good look at them, guessing the name of each dinosaur from the print on the fossil. It was great fun.
To help us to develop our understanding more, we then played a matching game. We had to match the picture of the dinosaur to its fossil. Thes dinosaur pictures were hidden all around our room, so we had to have a good look for them. We also made a start making our very own dinosaur fossil picture out of cotton buds. We cannot wait until they are finished.
Well done everyone for working hard !
Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Baty.

All of the boys and girls from P1a and P1b got together this week to make a school prayer. We made our prayer to Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of our school. We hope that you like it .
Prayer to Saint Nicholas.

Well done to Michael for being Mrs Macdonald’s first ever ‘Pupil of the Week’ in P1a. Michael was given this very special award for being a super listener. It was very difficult to choose as all of the boys and girls have tried hard this week. Well done everyone !
As a treat, Michael took home a certificate, medal and treat from Mrs Macdonald’s special tin. Who will it be next week ?
A big warm welcome to all of the boys and girls who have started primary 1. We are delighted to welcome you all and your mummies and daddies to St Nicholas Primary. We are looking forward to the year ahead and are delighted to be your teachers.
Love from,
Mrs Macdonald (P1a) Mrs Baty (P1b) and Mrs Gibson (P2/1).
As part of our ‘Living Things’ topic, we have been learning about spiders. This was Ronan’s great idea. We have looked at lots of spiders. We didn’t know that there so many !
We now know that :
There is a black widow spider – Kai.
There is a spider called a tarantula – Zach.
Spiders have oil on ther back – Neve W.
Spiders have eight legs – Finlay A.
Spiders do not fly – Maymunah.
Spiders spray webs to catch flies – Evan.
A spider web is made out of silk – Casper.
Some spiders are very hairy – Daniel.
Spiders have two body parts – Chloe.
Spiders have oil on their body so that they don’t stick to their web – Connor.
Some spiders eat other spiders – Kai.
Spiders have little holes on their body and this is where you get the silk – Finlay F.
Some spiders have eight eyes – Aoibhe.
After learning so many different facts we made our own spider’s web out of string and wool. We also rolled a sphere into paint to create a spider’s web. We used our thumbs to print little spiders. It was a lot of fun.
Here are P1b having fun today during their ‘Activity Afternoon’. What did we do ? We looked through magnifying glasses at lots of different leaves, plants and flowers. The magnifying glasses helped us see things in greater detail. We also had fun making butterflies and using coins whilst playing in the ‘Flower Shop’.
Thank you so much to all of the boys and girls in P2 and their teachers for inviting us to see the fantastic habitats that they made. We already knew what a habitat was but it was fantastic to see lots of different models of these. Today we seen bee hives, deserts, beaver dens, fish tanks, beaches, oceans, ponds, a bear cave, jungles, a fox cave, an insect hotel, rabbit holes, hedgehog dens, owl nests, the Antarctic and a kennel. There were so many different habitats to see !
Well done P2, you are so talented and we learnt lots from you today.
Here are the happy little chickens, (also known as P1b) working hard. We spent an afternoon doing chicken related things.
Our activities included :
Working with our shoulder partner to record a chicken related fact.
Making chickens.
Playing a chicken game on the smartboard, (we had to rescue the baby chicks from the foxes).
Sequencing the life cycle of a chicken, (the pictures were muddled up, we had to sort them and put them in the write order).
Practising our fine motor skills to colour in a chicken picture, (Mrs Macdonald said our clolouring looked like P2 colouring in !).
We had a fun, active and constructive afternoon.
Primary 1b have been very busy this week recapping 2D and 3D shapes. We went on a shape hunt and recorded our findings. We hadn’t realised before just how many things there are that we use that are made out of 3D shapes. We have been very active with our learning. What else have we been up to ?
We have played ‘Name that shape’
We played ‘Shape Bingo’.
We designed a living things picture using 2D shapes.
We played with the 3D shapes, stacking them and rolling them.
We learnt a fantastic rap all about 3D shapes.
Thank you to Miss Boyd and Primary 2 for allowing P1a and P1b the chance to help you. We loved watching you set your butteflies free. We felt sad and happy at the same time because it was nice having butterflies in St Nicholas, but we know that butterflies belong outside.
We learnt that :
Butterflies start off as caterpillars – Kai.
After a wee while the caterpillars change into a chrysallis – Jacob.
They then turn into a butterfly – Fallon.
Butterflies only live for two weeks – Aoibhe.
Before they die, butterflies lay hundreds of eggs and these turn into caterpillars.
Butterflies like to eat leaves and fruit – Harry and Chloe.
Once we got back to class, we completed a couple of butterfly themed activities. We wrote a report on butterflies and we made a symmetrical stained glass window butterfly.
Today, Primary 1 learnt all about chickens thanks to Mrs Hesketh. Mrs Hesketh has four chickens altogether and she told us all about these. We learnt that her chickens have a special hut in her garden to shelter them and she also told us that they have a long run to let them stretch their legs.
As a special treat today, Mrs Hesketh brought in two of her chickens to show us, Gryffun and Charmander. They are both girls. Gryffun is the white chicken, Charmander is the brown one.
We learnt that :
Chickens normally live until they are five years old – Zach.
Chickens lay eggs – Carson.
A chicken’s favourite colour is red – Finn.
Chickens sometimes eat tiny stones – Ronan.
Chickens like to eat apples – Jacob.
When chickens are small their little yellow feathers fall off – Fallon.
They eat insects – Finlay F.
Some chickens lay blue eggs – Aoibhe.
They eat meal worms, these are like sweeties for them – Harry.
They eat other types of fruit – Ciaran.
Chickens sometimes get eaten by foxes – Emily.
Chickens can be called hens – Christy.
Chickens babies are called chicks – Poppy.
Thank you so much Mrs Hesketh for bringing in your lovely chickens. We learnt lots and lots. We were especially pleased to see the egg that Gryffun lay whilst we were outside.
Thank you to to Connor and Cameron for bringing in their pet snails to show us. We had a good look at them and learnt that :
The body of the snail is long, moist and slimy. It has a shell to protect the soft body. When the snail is disturbed, it simply withdraws or pulls itself back into its shell. The snail also retreats into its shell and seals the entrance in dry weather to protect its body from drying up. A snail is most active at night and on cloudy days. It does not like the sunshine very much. During very cold weather or winter, it hibernates in the ground.
Sounds as though snails are very clever !
Today , primary 1b finally got to see the slaters that were hiding in Finlay’s box. One was sitting quite contentedly on top of the soil whilst the other was hiding to the side of one leaf.
We used a magnifying glass to help us to get a closer look. We learnt that slaters have 14 legs, seven on one side of the body and seven on the other. We also learnt that slaters aren’t fussy when it comes to food, they will eat almost anything, whether it is fresh or rotten. We noticed that the leaves in Finlay’s box had little nibbles on them, the slaters must have been hungry.
Whilst investigating, we also learnt that slaters are usually a grey, brown colour. This makes it harder for them to be seen when they are hiding in the soil. They can also be found hiding under stones.
Here are some of us slater watching !
Today, Finlay F arrived at school with a very well prepared box filled with moist soil, leaves and holes in the lid. What was in the box you may ask ? Well, Finlay brought in a box with slaters and slugs collected from his garden and his granny’s garden. We had a quick look to see if we could find them but they were hiding too well in the soil.
P1 will investigate again tomorrow using magnifying glasses and learn a fact or two about these fascinating beasties . Thank you Finlay for bringing these along !
Primary 1 are very excited to reveal the results of yesterday’s vote on our favourite animal. We are pleased to announce that the DOG was the most popular animal in primary 1 with 16 votes. The rabbit came second with 13 votes. The hamster came third with 10 votes and the cat came last with 6 votes. Here we are sorting and counting our votes.
Today, we learnt all about the General Election. We learnt that today, grown ups all around the country will be voting for the person that they want as the next leader of our country.
We learnt that the grown ups have an important decision to make as our leader will decide new rules for us to follow. We learnt that you are allowed to choose only person to be the leader and you do this by marking your paper with an X. We thought that this was funny ! We also learnt that you have to be 18 before you vote. Miss Toner told us that she once had the job of counting the votes. This took her a very long time !
To join in with the spirit of things we decided to hold our own vote today. We voted on our favourite animal as we are learning about living things. We had a choice of four: cats, dogs, rabbits and hamsters. We cast our vote and popped our voting paper in the box. They will be counted tomorrow. Mrs Macdonald knows which animal she wants to win ! (cat). We will let you know the outcome tomorrow when we do our big count and sort.
Today we helped to celebrate Ronan ‘s birthday . Happy 6th birthday to you ! We hope you have had a lovely day today at school.
We also wrote about our long weekend . We spoke about the importance of using full stops in our writing . We practised reading a story with no full stops . We soon got out of puff ! Between now and the end of term we are going to write lots and practise using placing our full stops in the correct places.
