National Digital Learning Week

Today is the final day of National Digital Learning Week and what a fantastic time we’ve had.  We kicked off the week by creating our own voice overs for a movie trailer.  We were shown the trailer without sound and had to use a range of technology to help us write a script, select and play music and sound clips and record our work.  Miss Spiers was so proud of the end results (unfortunately they’re too big to load onto our blog but we’re working on it!)

On Wednesday our Digital Leaders shared their knowledge of internet safety at assembly and we picked up some new tips about being super SMART online.

On Thursday some of the Digital Leaders visited our class to show us how to create avatars of ourselves and spoke about the important messages from our assembly.

Today was our favourite day.  We got to try out some of our new coding equipment and we got to take a virtual field trip into the Amazon rainforest with a little help from a virtual reality headset.

Phenomenal Personification in P5S!

We have been learning about personification which is a language technique where things are given human-like qualities.

Inspired by our rainforest learning context, we created poems which included personification and Miss Spiers was blown away with some of the fantastic descriptions we used.  We haven’t quite finished yet however we wanted to share some snippets of our work with you.

‘The sun peers its head over the top of the trees and awakens the animals.                                                                                                                                The tigers roar and stretch.  Birds sing and fly.                                                Lions shake and scream to the sounds of the rainforest, like a musical band.’  (Becca)

‘When the sun wakes up the animals waken too and dangerous things can happen!                                                                                                          Warm rain drops from the sky as the clouds cry in despair.’  (David)

‘I am a house, home to things I do now know the name of.  I block out the light and hardly ever does the sun penetrate my shielding arms and make its way to the floor.                                                                                The rain however does.  The drops race and come slamming down onto the ground.  The things inside me wake up.  They rush through the gaps and start to talk as the rainforest comes alive.’ (Erin)

Keep checking our page as we’ll add our finished re-drafts next week.

Have a lovely long weekend 🙂

Cinnamon Eggy Bread

Today we made cinnamon eggy bread (or French toast) in the learning lab and it was delicious!

It was quite a simple recipe but we had to be patient and work in teams whilst our food was cooking.

The eggy bread was so good that most of us ate it in school so didn’t keep any for our parents (ooops!)

If you want to try to make your own cinnamon eggy bread click on the link below to download the recipe we followed.

Eggs-cellent work in the Kitchen

Primary 7 are continuing to work on their WW2 context and decided this week to look at some basic cookery skills in the kitchen, we discussed the ways we could cook our rationed eggs in the war and had a go at making the perfect poached egg and boiled eggs on toast!

Firstly we had a go at poaching the eggs! Some were eggs-ceptional and some were not such a cracking success…

We then had a go at making boiled eggs and timed them ourselves depending on whether we like hard or soft boiled eggs – they were ouef-elly good!

World Book Day 🌎 📖

On Thursday 1st March 2018 we will be celebrating World Book Day in School by encouraging all children to come to school dressed up as their favourite book character!

We will also spend this week completing different book related activities in class and holding whole school DEAR times! We’ve also asked the pupils to find and be photographed in  the strangest place to read a book!

Thank you for all your support!

Dunblane Primary Action Team

P2W China

This term Primary 2 have been learning all about China. To launch our learning context we created a class dragon called ‘Nian’ who hangs above the carpet watching over us.

We have been learning how to write and say 1-10 in Mandarin. We have also been learning about the Legend of the  Zodiac, we have found out that we were all born in the year of the rabbit.  The restaurant  ‘Chopstx’ has opened  in class where we can play and explore.  Here are some pictures of us working at our stations.

This term we are also using the learning lab where we are making different Chinese dishes. So far we have made spring rolls where we had to carefully measure our ingredients, mix them together and roll up the pastry. The rolling was very tricky! This week we have made egg fried rice, we had to follow the recipe very carefully to make sure we had the correct amount of ingredients.

Take a look at us cooking.

Disaster Relief!

As part of their Extreme Earth context, Primary 7H have been looking at the effects of Natural Disasters on communities. One of the problems people might face after an earthquake or flood is access to clean water so we looked at what could be used to filter water in the case of a Natural Disaster.

Miss Campbell set up the experiment with us asking us to find out which materials are best to filter out the mud and debris often found in water after a disaster.

We used sand, stones and cotton wool to try and filter the water, we recognised that cotton wool could be swapped for clothing after the event of a disaster as cotton wool may not be readily available.

We made predictions about what materials would be best at soaking up the dirt in the water and found that putting both the stones and cotton wool together was the best. We decided that it would still be best to boil the water after cleaning it up to make sure it was safe to drink.
