Room 17

with Miss Jamieson

August 2024

All pupils have settled in well and are excited to be in Primary 6! We are so excited for the year ahead.

Term 1

Numeracy

We’ve been having so much fun getting creative with numeracy! This term, we’ve explored the place value and calculations through meaningful contexts, such as Global Goal 14: Life Below Water, and Global Goal 11: Sustainable Communities. A highlight was designing and building our own sustainable cities and staying within budget, using our creativity and initiative. We even had the opportunity to present our work at assembly, proudly showcasing Article 13 of the UNCRC—the right to share what we learn, think, and feel.

Right now, we’re diving into a range of strategies to develop our multiplication skills!

Literacy

We had a wonderful time reading our class novel, Matilda! Our favourite moments were group reading sessions, where we made great use of the flexible seating options in Room 17. We participated in a variety of collaborative activities that helped deepen our understanding of the story. By examining character items and profiles, we practiced making logical inferences and justifying our thinking—developing our critical reading skills in the process!

HWB

In P.E., we’ve had an exciting time exploring a variety of sports, including athletics, rugby and gymnastics. We developed our leadership skills by creating movement sequences to demonstrate to the class, all while motivating and supporting our teammates.

We also had great fun exploring the Zones of Regulation through drama. Using freeze frames, we creatively expressed and examined our own emotions as well as those of others, helping us build a deeper understanding of emotional regulation.

Outdoor Learning : Sustainability & Biodiversity

We love getting outdoors in Room 17. During our woods sessions, we explored Global Goal 15: Life on Land. Over five weeks, we monitored “sit spots” to observe and track the human impact on our local woods, inspiring us to create our own Forest Guardians.

We also participated in a sustainability lesson, learning all about Global Goal 13: Climate Action, and discovered practical ways we can live more sustainably. It’s been an exciting journey connecting with nature and exploring how we can help protect our planet!

Science : Mixtures & Solutions

Our class had a fantastic time exploring mixtures and solutions through hands-on experiments! First, we made predictions and then tested our theories to determine whether different materials were soluble or insoluble. It was an engaging way to develop our scientific thinking and draw meaningful conclusions.

General Information
  • Please ensure your child has a pair of indoor shoes in school. They will change into these when entering the school building.
  • If your child is bringing a bottle to school, we would encourage this to be water only. This will help to keep our carpets clean if there is a spillage.
  • Our PE days are a Monday and a Wednesday.
  • Our Forest School day will be on a Thursday afternoon during Term 3 with Mrs McCreadie. Please provide outdoor clothing and appropriate footwear for your child to change into.
  • Children should have an outdoor jacket every day as we aim to take the children outside at some point each day. Pupils should also have a pair of indoor shoes to change into within the classroom.
  • Miss Jamieson will use homework diaries to communicate with parents and carers. Homework will be issued on a Monday and will be due in by Friday each week, although can be brought in earlier if completed before Friday. In Chatelherault, children earn 6 minutes of golden time each day throughout the week and are then awarded their 30 minutes of golden time from the week on a Friday afternoon. If children lose any golden time this will be communicated in the homework diaries.
Class Charter

Chatelherault is a Gold Rights Respecting School, therefore Primary 6 have been learning about their rights under the UNCRC (United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child).  The children used their right to give their opinions and have them taken seriously (article 12) when they decided on a theme for their class charter. Many ideas were collected and the class had a vote to select our theme. The class voted for a theme for the class charter and have created a display to show their rights and responsibilities. Each child has representation within the class charter and has contributed to creating the display.
