Pancake Day

On Tuesday the 12th of February, pupils worked on their weighing and volume measuring skills as they cooked their own pancakes.

Elise writes:

“On Pancake Day we got to taste the pancakes and I put on lemon juice.  We had too much batter at the end so our group got a quarter of an extra pancake.  The name of our group is The Famous Fours and our names are Elise, Carlo, Cara and Archie.”

Gymnastics Competition

On Friday the 8th of February, three teams of pupils from Abernyte Primary competed in the inter-school gymnastics competition held at Bells Sports Centre, Perth.

Two P1’s and a P3 competed in one team.  Two P4’s and a P3 competed in a second team.  Four P5’s competed in a third team.

All three teams showed great levels od concentration, enthusiasm and ability, representing the school well with great floor and vault routines.

SNOW!!!!

The weather hit Abernyte with a vengence this week, with snow and ice making driving (and walking!) conditions really treacherous.

Pupils and staff were drafted in to help clear a way to the school and some support staff members had to work from home as the roads were too dangerous.  Pupils that come to school on the school bus even got the day off school as the bus couldn’t get up the slippery hill to Abernyte!

Christmas Party

Tis the season to be jolly and everyone was having a great time at the school Christmas party.  Tayside Contracts laid on a special Turkey-with-all-the-trimmings school dinner which pupils (and staff!) enjoyed while listening to Christmas songs and pulling crackers.

Later, pupils had their annual Christmas party which was hosted by the visiting P.E. specialist.  Pupils got dressed to the nines in their best party clothes and enjoyed traditional party games, including musical statues and pass the parcel.

Fun In Athletics

On Wednesday 14th November, Primary 5-7 attended Fun In Athletics at Bells Sports Centre in Perth.  Abernyte teamed up with Forgandenny and Forteviot for the day and pupils took part in lots of different field and track events.

Athletic activities included standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, chest push, soft javelin, obstacle relays, lap relays, lap paarlaufs and over/under relays.

Thanks to Christine Cook to avery well organised and enjoyable morning!

Halloween Party

On Wednesday 31st October, the whole school took party in a Healthy Halloween Party in the afternoon.  Pupils dressed up and painted their faces before the party, then played Musical Zombies and Halloween Corners before stopping for a healthy snack.

After the break, pupils played Pin the Eye on the Zombie and went “Spooning for Grapes” before the pumpkin lanterns and costumes were judged.

“Joseph” at Perth Theatre

On Wednesday 12th September, the pupils of Abernyte Primary went on a school trip to see “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Perth Theatre.  As pupils had already learned and performed several of the songs at Show-In-A-Day in May, everyone knew all the words, but were excited to hear the songs in a professional show.

Primary 1 pupils were especially excited as this was their first every school trip!  A great time was had by all and Joseph’s coat was particularly spectacular!

Woodlands, Words & Wonders

On Wednesday 20th June, the pupils from Abernyte spent the day in the woods, taking part in outdoor learning with storytellers and countryside rangers.

Met by “Henny”, pupils walked with her to Rosie Priory, learning about the uses of various local plants and trees on the way.  Inside the tipi at the site, “Henny” told the children traditional stories, then introduced “David Douglas” (a 19th Century plant collector from Scone) and his Indian guide “Running Fox”.

“David Douglas” told tales of his plant collecting days in the wilds of North America and showed the children some of the species he had brought back.  “Running Fox” spoke of his adventures with David Douglas, showed the children how to start a fire with sticks and talked about the 4 essential elements of wilderness survival (water, food, warmth & shelter).

Pupils where then given an opportunity to collect samples of local plant life and learn more about their practical and medicinal uses, before being given the 3 basic ingredients of storytelling (character, location & narrative – beginning, middle & end) and being tasked to create their own stories in groups.
