The Bee Hotel Food Court

Today some of the class started working on our raised flower beds that will be planted with wildflowers for the occupants of our, yet to be built, bee hotel.

The Class did a great job with hardly any paint on clothes. They also wrote some notes for their e-portfolio, I’ve put some of these below.

This term we have been learning about bees so the Kilsyth rotary club reached out and they had a big chat with us about bees and gave us information about what bees like. Tthey wanted to make a bee hotel with us and we are also making some wild flower planters and the look amazing.
Josh

We are going to “bee” building a bee hotel, but it can also be for other bugs and flies an wasps.

We are getting help for the bee hotel from the Kilsyth Rotary Club. For this We need items with many holes in them like bricks, leaves, straw/grass, sticks, wood, slates, lots of wood, logs, moss and lots of other natural objects and un-natural objects to.
Hollie

The next time they came they talked to us about what flowers would be suitable to plant they said that our Bee hotel would be for other small creatures. Like moths and flys and unfortunately wasps. When they left they gave us something called collars. Not a dog collars they were big wooden planks the opened up into a square shape.
Ben

So today we got these six wood planks and they bend and turn into a squares, and we got six of them, we painted them with white primer paint. So our teacher told two students to get one plank outside, and he showed us how to paint it carefully.
Alfred

Once we’ve done that we will fill it with soil and wild flower seeds. Soon we will be making the bee hotel but we need to get sticks, stones, log extra. We will use that to make the hotel. People will be bringing stuff in for the hotel suck as bricks with holes, bamboo and other stuff. Once it’s done we will look at it and leave.
Hazel

The next step is for the collars to dry then put designs on them then let them dry and get varnished dried yet again and then be made into raised beds for wild flowers to a-tracked bees and not that welcome but wasps next we will build the actual hotel which may “bee” a challenge but we can manage it I’m sure because I’m “bee-ing” positive.
Hollie

We still need to get some things for the bee hotel like tomorrow we are going to go to the woods and collect some stuff for the bee hotel like sticks and other things. We haven’t started to build the bee hotel yet but the bee people will be coming back after the Easter holidays to build the bee hotel with us. Some people will be bringing some stuff in like bamboo and bricks with holes in it.
Rhuaridh

We have been sent out to our homes and soon other places to collect items and other materials that bees and insects can fit through, for example a brick (the brick would have to possess holes within itself to be accepted and put into use.)
Charlie

In the afternoon the class did a bit of design work and started transferring their designs to the pained collars.

Junior Sports Leaders

On Monday Afternoon Julie from Active Schools, @NLASC_Julie, started week one of our Junior Leaders program. The Children in p6&7 are learning how to lead the younger children in keeping active and having fun.

Here is a wee video of the children practising warm up games:

We can’t wait till next week.

Highlights of the Week 29-11-2019

We have crammed in so much this week that it is hard to remember it all. We also were so busy that we took far fewer photos than usual.

We continued our preparation for the Christmas Fayre, 3 group organising the making tree ornaments, Santa faces and some cookies.

The children did really well under the pressure of a deadline.

The Fayre went really well too, the class selling the decorations they produced, their Christmas Calandars and other items.

These activities targeted our food preparation skills, especially measuring and kneading.

After all the fun of the fair on Thursday we had some more fun on Friday, we made fruit skewers and cooked them over the fire pit. This gave us more practise of our cooking skills, chopping and cutting. Some children practised using lives safely to cut kindling and we were all safe around the fire. We were so busy looking at what as going on we didn’t even get one photo! The class were brilliant and keeping safe and following or fire pit rules. they built, lit and fed the fire. We even managed a bit of literacy, thinking of adjective and alliteration.

During all of this we found time to practise our Christmas show, this was made very enjoyable for the staff by the excellent behaviour and enthusiasm  of the whole school.

Finally playtime saw the invention of The Banton Snack Van!

Junior Sports Leader’s – Hannah & Aaron

What it’s about

Junior sports leader’s is a club of p5-7’s getting coached to coach the p1-4’s to be more active and have fun.

Session 1

Julie from active schools came in to talk to us about how to be a Junior Sports Leader. We got booklets of how to be a junior sports leader. Julie quickly ran through session 1 of the booklet and then she teaches us some warm up games like Tig, What’s the time Mr Wolf and other games.

Session 2

Now Julie went onto the main games like Ice Cube where we couldn’t be seen moving. And we obviously had to start with a warmup game which was tig and we also made our own obstacle courses. And then we tidied up and we are to do session 2 in our little booklet.

The snail eggs

Today we found eggs out in our playground. at 8:54 before the bell went me and my friend were looking for robins but we were also looking for bugs we moved something and we found eggs. I thought they were seeds but my friend said NO THEY ARE NOT SEEDS THEY ARE EGGS!!!!!

So we got the teacher or playground helper. She came to lift the eggs up and move them into a net then we brought them into class to show our teacher then we searched up to see what eggs they where. I thought they were slug eggs and I was right they are slug or snail eggs they will hatch in two to four weeks. We put the eggs in a container so we can get a magnifying glass to look at them they are really see through we can’t find the mother yet.
