English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
ESOL courses are developed for learners whose first language is not English. These courses allow young people to develop English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
At Inverclyde Academy, we are supported by the local authority ESOL Team to offer SQA ESOL qualifications from Levels 2-6. At times this can be via consortium across the local authority.
English and ESOL courses are equivalent qualifications, intended for different learners based on their language needs. These qualifications are now given parity of esteem by all colleges and universities including Primary Teaching and Medicine. However, they are not designed for dual presentation – schools cannot enter a learner for both English and ESOL courses in the same session. You can find out more about the qualifications here: ESOL – Course overview and resources – SQA
Aside from the qualifications, our ESOL team also work with young people across the curriculum with language assistants supporting pupils from S1-6 in a wide range of subjects as available.
