English (BGE)

Welcome to BGE English

The Broad General Education English course provides a solid foundation on which students can build their skills in Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening. A wide range of texts are studied, including novels, plays, poetry, media and non-fiction and students work towards building their analytical and evaluative skills in responding to what they have read. Students undertake regular spelling and grammar activities support development of writing skills.

Students identified as requiring additional support may be part of the ‘Fresh Start’ programme and we work closely with the Principal Teacher of EAL.

In addition, all our S1 and S2 pupils undertake set homework projects across the year, for example S1 ‘My Family Past/ Someone I admire’ and S2 ‘Discursive Essay – Gaming’ . Furthermore, all S1 and S2 classes also make weekly visits to the school library to foster good reading habits. Inverclyde Academy has earned a Scottish Book Trust ‘Silver Reading Schools’ award.

During S3, opportunity is given for students to overtake National 4 outcomes and the Added Value Unit in preparation for the Senior Phase.
