S3 Dance Elective

The S3 Dance Elective course is the foundation for any of the dance courses further up in the school. No experience is necessary but pupils may benefit from extra practises to keep up with those who are experienced dancers.

The pupils will focus on the development and application of appropriate dance skills in two contrasting styles: Contemporary and Jazz. They will be taught through technique classes and will perform a tutor-led dance in both styles. Pupils will also enhance their knowledge and understanding of the styles by observing and appreciating professional dance pieces.

Pupils will also begin to develop basic choreographic skills, creating and developing movement from various stimuli and the application of simple choreographic devices. Learners will then reflect on the effectiveness of choreographic choices.

National 5 Dance

This course is suitable for all learners with a general interest in Dance or for those hoping to progress onto higher levels of study. The National 5 Dance course develops pupils’ knowledge, understanding and technique within two contrasting Dance styles. Pupils will choose one of them to perform for their final exam (35%). Pupils will look at the technical and performance skills required within these styles in both a theory and practical setting. They will also research the development of a selected dance style and analyse a professional piece of choreography as part of the question paper (20%). Pupils will develop a range of choreographic principles and, as part of their final exam, candidates will be expected to demonstrate their understanding by choreographing a duet which will work through their chosen theme, include a choreographic structure and demonstrate a variety of choreographic devices (35%). Pupils will also write a review on this choreography which also contributes to the final grade (30%).
