Learning for Sustainability Week at Balornock will begin on Monday 30th April. This will be an all encompassing themed week for our pupils addressing learning within Eco Schools, RRS and HWB. Pupils will be undertaking various activities including nature walks, yoga, designing a school mascot, etc. This is sure to be an exciting week for everyone with lots of fantastic learning experiences for our pupils. At the start of the year P7 partnered up with a P7 class from St Martha’s to complete a series of workshops around sectarianism in Glasgow. Since then we have completed lots of work on the history of sectarianism, and thoroughly enjoyed reading Divided City by Theresa Breslin, which is a story about two boys who support opposite football teams in Glasgow. You may have noticed that some ‘new’ bins have recently appeared in our lunch hall?…. The Eco Heroes have decided to take steps towards helping minimise the amount of food being wasted in our school by encouraging everyone at Balornock to put on their Eco thinking caps when clearing up after they have eaten! We now have three separate bins in our lunch hall and would encourage everyone to use accordingly.
P7b have been trying out some programming, we’re getting the hang of making code so we can start making games and animations!
Over the past three weeks both the Primary 7s have been working with a P7 class from St Martha’s Primary School to explore and learn about sectarianism. On Thursday 11th January, all children from P5 to P7 attended a Lego workshop where they built working models of a conveyor belt. Here is some of the feedback from the children: “I think Lego is fun, it was easy to build and I think it is amazing how Lego can do that and I didn’t know that.” “I enjoyed the Lego workshop even though I don’t really like Lego.”
What a fantastic morning at Balornock Primary. Hopskotch Theatre Company visited us to perform their Christmas Pantomime The Wizard of Oz. We all thoroughly enjoyed us and we are now all very much in the festive spirit.
Throughout our topic on India we have been looking at and creating our own art influenced by Indian artwork. We decided to create our own Mehndi patterns. They are used in celebrations. As part of our topic on India, we have been creating some beautiful Mehndi designs. People in India decorate their skin with these detailed designs as part of various celebrations such as weddings and festivals. We are having a practice before we sell our artwork at the Christmas Fayre this Friday. We will be using facepaint to draw them on to your hands instead of the traditional Henna. 50p a
The Eco Heroes had a great meeting this afternoon to discuss the on-going plans for the school! There were lots of great ideas from the team including having ‘Litter Ninjas’ in the upper school playground to ensure that no litter is left after play time and lunch time.
