Sports Day 2014

Today, Sgoil a’ Bhac held it’s annual Sports Day. We had an excellent turnout of family supporters who cheered on children in 100m, sack race, egg and spoon, partner race, hopper race, 200m and relays.

We would like to say a big well done to all the children who participated today. You all tried your best and made it a great event.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who helped to organise and run today’s event.

We’re sharing a small selection of photos here and we’ll run the full selection on the screen in the foyer this week.

We have been learning languages.  We had French and we know our numbers and some colours. Then on Tuesday we had Gaelic. Mrs MacLennan drew a line in the middle of the white board and put numbers on each side. Then she would say a number in Gaelic and the first person to find it would get a point.

On Thursday Mrs Dillon came in because Mrs Murray was off. She did angles with us in maths. After lunch Mrs Dillon did a lesson with us about what we want to be when we grow up. We also had to write all the steps we have to take to get there.

I want to be an artist.

On Friday my reading group had reading. We all have different books and we tell everyone what has happened since the last time we read aloud. My book is The Snow Merchant.

On Monday morning we had gym outside with Mr. Smith.  We played a game called Foxes, Chickens and Worms, it was really fun.  In maths this week I have been learning division facts and using EducationCity to help me.

In language I did some work on comprehension using two different stories, one about King James and one about a tightrope walker.  I liked the story about the tightrope walker because there was a part where he had to rely on his friend for help and his friend was very scared!

This week the P7s were sitting PIEs and PIMs.  That stands for Progress in English and Progress in Maths.  We will be doing them next year too.

In art on Tuesday we were learning how to draw the human eye.  This will help us when we start our Human Body topic in class.

Sports day is coming soon and some of us have already started practising in the playground!

P2 and P3 ‘Fun Fours’ Football

Some of our P2 and P3 pupils took part in a special football festival for Lewis schools today. It was organised by the Council’s Sport Development and Active Schools teams. This festival aimed to enhance children’s ability to run, throw, jump and kick the ball and to develop balance and co-ordination through playing four-a-side football games. All our pupils did really well and enjoyed their day. Thank you to Mrs Graham (G1-3), Mr Macdonald (Janitor) and Mrs Macdonald (Parent) for escorting the pupils to this event.

Sgoil a’ Bhac Memories – Book Launch

Book Launch

Everyone at Sgoil a’ Bhac would like to congratulate the book committee on the successful launch of their book ‘Sgoil a’ Bhac Memories Through the Ages’.

This book is the culmination of months of hard work and perseverance by the committee in gathering information, stories and photos, identify the names of hundreds of former pupils and staff and bringing all this together in a volume that charts the 136 year history of schools and education in Sgire a’ Bhac.

It was a delight to see the community coming together at the school last night to see the launch of the book with an evening of talks, singing and musical performances.

Nach math a rinn sibh!

After selling out the initial delivery of books on the launch night, copies will be available for sale at Gordon’s Shop and in Stornoway newsagents in the coming weeks.

This week in maths I was working on money.  I learnt how to pay for things in shops using lots of different coins and notes.  For spelling this week, I was able to choose words that I find particularly challenging and focus on them.  I chose to put them into different sentences and used them in Spelling City for extra fun!  In class I also work on learning how to touch type.  I type in my spelling words and have to use the correct fingers to type them while trying not to look at the keyboard.  In class we do lots of different reading activities.  This week I chose activity twenty one where I had to make up my own dictionary using words from my book.

This week we have been learning about fractions in maths. When you want to find a fraction of an amount, the rule is to divide the whole number by the bottom number of the fraction and multiply your answer by the top number of the fraction.

In art we heard a very interesting story about a girl from Afghanistan who has beautiful eyes and is in a world famous picture.  However, while the girl didn’t get money from the picture the photographer did.  So, twenty years after the photo was taken, he looked for her.  It took him two years to find her but eventually he found her and gave her money.

Last week we learnt about mode, mean, meridian and range as part of data handling.  We also did some work looking at different types of angles and got to learn about degrees.  One of the things we had to do was work out which way we would be facing if we had to turn a certain number of degrees.

We also had ZooLab in the school last week.  There was a huge snail, a millipede, a tarantula, a tree frog and a snake.  We got to hold them all apart from the tarantula.  My favourite was the snake!
