Last week we learnt about mode, mean, meridian and range as part of data handling. We also did some work looking at different types of angles and got to learn about degrees. One of the things we had to do was work out which way we would be facing if we had to turn a certain number of degrees.
We also had ZooLab in the school last week. There was a huge snail, a millipede, a tarantula, a tree frog and a snake. We got to hold them all apart from the tarantula. My favourite was the snake!
This week in EP6-7 we have been learning about Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. We learnt that the boy has his Bar Mitzvah at age thirteen and a girl has her Bat Mitzvah age twelve. In the Jewish faith they speak Hebrew and Bar Mitzvah means ‘son of the commandments’ while Bat Mitzvah means ‘daughter of the commandments’. When Jewish children have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah they have a big party, get lots of presents and they read from the Torah – which is the Old Testament. They also make speeches to their parents and families saying thank you for bring them up. Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a celebration of them becoming adults.
On Monday the 14th we all came back from the Easter holidays. We were asked to choose any article from a newspaper. We cut it out and stuck it into our reading jotters and we then had to write a summary of what it was about. This is so that we can work on our reading skills for use in our literacy circles. We also did some Alta maths which we did online on the computers in the ICT room.
On Wednesday the 16th James’s grandfather, Jock Murray, came in to talk to us. We had all been working on personal talks on a subject of our choice. James had chosen to speak about his granddad and invited him in so we could ask him some questions. He has lived a really interesting life and it was good to get a chance to speak to him.
This week in class we have been busy making sushi as part of our Japan topic. We made it in time for our parents to come in and try it. We didn’t think they liked it very much! In maths we have started working on fractions. Today we all did our individual talks. They were all very interesting. It is now the holidays!
Every week EP6/7 are going to have a Weekly Website Whizzkid to explain what we have been up to in class for the week. This week is my turn!
This week we were making lots of different things to go on display. We made posters showing how to survive an earthquake and we did a news report on the tsunami that happened in 2011 in Japan. We were also talking about peace and conflict in the news. We had to bring in a newspaper report that interested us to do with peace or conflict and write a summary of it as well as give our own opinion.
Some of the EP6/7 boys in our class went to the Soccer Seven football competition in Dundee with some of the GP6/7s. We know some of their scores but haven’t found out their final placing yet.
Today the pupil council are doing a Sports Relief fun day. They are doing an obstacle course for the P1/2/3 and they are also doing a tea afternoon.
Congratulations to EP7 who raised just under £200 towards their school trip by organising a movie afternoon. The EP7s did a fantastic job and showed a huge amount of enthusiasm and dedication when organising the event. We would also like to extend our thanks to all of the parents who contributed baking for the day. Your generosity is very much appreciated. Congratulations also go to David Anderson GP5 who won our fantastic chocolate hamper!
Today, Sgoil a’ Bhac hosted this year’s inter-schools EuroQuiz competition. As well as our own team, we welcomed teams and supporters from Laxdale, Lionel, Sgoil an Rubha, Tolsta, Sir E Scott and Stornoway Primary. A simultaneous event was being held in the Southern Isles for Uist schools. Quizmaster Zena Stewart got the competition underway with a packed hall of supporters from all the schools.
The first part of the competition involved four rounds:
– European Geography
– Languages (French, Spanish, German)
– European Union
– Culture, History & Sport.
At the end of the four rounds, the top two teams across the Western Isles were to go head-to-head in the final to decide the winner. At the end of the four rounds, the scores were as follows:
Sgoil a’ Bhac – 50pts
Stornoway – 46pts
Sgoil an Rubha – 40pts
Sir E Scott – 39pts
Lionel – 36pts
Balivanich – 36pts
Laxdale – 34pts
Paible – 29pts
Tolsta – 25pts
Daliburgh – 23pts
As the top two teams, Sgoil a’ Bhac and Stornoway Primary went head-to-head in the final. In a nail-biting battle, the final finished in a 7-7 tie. The tension ramped up even further as we entered a knockout tie-break. In a gripping finale, Stornoway Primary edged the win with a 3-2 victory.
We’d like to say a huge well done to our team (James, Ellie, Holly and Maia) for such a great performance on the day and for working so hard in preparing for the event. We’d also like to say thanks to their teachers, Miss Macdonald and Mrs Murray for their help in tutoring the team and to our janitor, Mr Macdonald, for organising the tables and seating in the hall.
We’d also like to pass on our congratulations to Stornoway Primary and wish them well when they go on to represent the Western Isles in the national EuroQuiz in Edinburgh later this year.
Today, the pupils of G5-7 and E5-7 visited a special exhibition in Back Free Church Hall from Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). During a very interesting presentation they found out about the work of MAF in supporting people all over the World, flying food, water, medicines and other aid to the needy.
The school made a donation to MAF at the end of the presentations to help continue to support their work.
As part of their visit to Lewis, MAF will be offering the opportunity to have a go in a flight simulator. The simulator will be available at the MA Memorial Hall, Stornoway on Saturday and at Back Free Church on Sunday evening during the Youth Fellowship.
EP7 are holding a movie afternoon on Friday 7th March. We will be showing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The entry will be £1 per ticket and there will also be a tuck shop before the movie starts. In addition to this we will be selling raffle tickets for a chocolate hamper. These will be priced at 50p per strip. All money raised will go towards the P7 trip in June.
We are starting to get very excited about our school trip in June. This week we got to vote to decide what six activities we will do while we are there. There were lots of different options so now we just have to wait to see if we managed to get our top choices!
EP7 are organising a film afternoon to raise funds for the trip. We are currently doing some market research to help us finalise the details. GP7 will also be helping us out on the day to organise everything. They hope to organise another fundraising activity in April.
