Pupil Committees

We are all members of a Pupil Group and our job is to work together to improve our school making it a better place to learn.  We meet each month to discuss our targets, evaluate our progress and plan our activities for the month ahead.   At our first meeting we created our targets and discussed how we intend to meet them and sent the information to Mrs McKay who then created a Pupil Improvement Plan (2016/2017).

The Vikings Land in Uplawmoor!

dscn36171Primary 4/5 have been learning how different life was in Viking times to now. To see this first hand they went off to Vikingar to experience living in a Viking village. We all had a brilliant day cooking in the longhouse, playing Viking games and some of the children even got married! The class had written a script for a play that they hoped would share all their learning on this topic with their parents. 15 vicious Vikings took that stage at their Learning Assembly and gave a first class performance of their play. Next in the topic is some outdoor learning as the children built their own longhouses! We will keep you updated…..

P7 Present the Poppy Appeal

img_2341Primary 7 prepared a presentation for the whole school today on the importance of remembering those who fought (and continue to fight) for our country.  They will be coming round the classes selling Poppies which we should all wear with pride.

This year, The Royal British Legion is asking the nation to Rethink Remembrance by recognising the sacrifices made not just by the Armed Forces of the past, but by today’s generation too.

For many people, Remembrance is associated with the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. While we will always remember them, the Legion wants to raise awareness of a new generation of veterans and Service personnel that need our support.

P6/7 Become Victorian Pupils for the Morning

dsc00680 dsc00684 dsc00721 dsc00821 dsc00818 dsc00806 dsc00848 dsc00833 dsc00749 dsc00745As part of our social studies topic, we have been learning about the Victorians.  I loved learning about the jobs  Victorians did such as miners, mill workers and working in factories.  The working conditions were awful and the workers were treated very poorly.

We were lucky enough to visit Scotland Street Museum to experience what it was like to be a Victorian pupil.  Every time we were asked a question, we had to stand up and say the answer, then say ‘sir’ at the end.  Some children had to  wear a ‘dunce’ hat, which was used to ridicule children who got the wrong answer.  We also had to do handwriting with a quill dipped in ink.  Mine was a mess!!

Eco Committee Reps Visit The Scottish Parliament.

eco1A big well done to Ollie Creanor, Alex Long, Maia Bell,  Mollie Long, Cayla Cooper, Lucy McInnes and Ashley Kee who were all finalists for their entries to the Keep Scotland Beautiful Environment Competition. They had to come up with a solution to an environmental problem in their area and they chose issues such as air pollution, chewing gum and litter as their focus.

On Thursday 27th October, Ashley, Lucy, Cayla and Maia went along to Edinburgh to represent Uplawmoor for the final event. Uplawmoor didn’t come first but we won £100,  a certificate and met the Presiding Officer Ken Mackintosh.  They were also lucky enough to get a tour of the Parliament!

Uplawmoor Primary School Support The Twinning Revo-loo-tion!

picUplawmoor Primary School support Toilet Twinning Organisation who help those in desperate poverty to have access to a proper latrine, clean water and the information they need to be healthy.

Thank you to all of your donations collected at our Caldwell Parish Church services, as we are now twinning two toilets and we hope to be able  to twin another this session.   2.4 billion people don’t have somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the loo. That’s more than a third of the people on the planet.

t-twinning-2Thanks to your generous support, Dortea now has somewhere safe to go to the loo – instead of relieving herself in the bush in an insecure area of Democratic Republic of Congo. She once narrowly escaped serious assault after her husband scared off a masked man who had pushed her to the ground. ‘I was afraid every time my daughter and I went to the bush to go to the toilet,’ Dortea says. ‘My husband would stand at the edge of the compound and wait, worrying that something bad might happen to us. Attacks on women are now much reduced – because of our toilets.’

Our donations make it possible for people like Dortea to learn about sanitation, build toilets and take giant steps out of poverty. 2

Oliver Curle – Competition Finalist

ocA huge congratulations to our very own Primary 1 pupil, Oliver Curle, who has been chosen as a finalist in MacTaggart and Mickel Homes’ Swimmer drawing competition.  They were extremely impressed with his artwork which was ‘colourful and well designed’.  Champion swimmer Mark Deans, who came to visit the children, will now look at the finalists’ artwork from ourselves, Mearns Primary and Howwood Primary and decide on an overall winner.  The winning school will receive £100 in sports vouchers.  Good luck to all the finalists and we will keep you posted on Oliver’s entry!oliver-curle-2

Skill Builders – September 2016

dscn35021Well done to Rudi, Zara, Cameron and Rowan who were the first children to receive a ‘brick’ rewarding their effort in building their skills for life, learning and work.  We can’t wait to add their bricks to our wall to show everybody how Uplawmoor Primary School are progressing their skills and building on their learning.

Keep up the good work!

Mark Deans – Scottish Open Water Swimmer

uplawmoor-38-2 uplawmoor-13-2 uplawmoor-24-2 uplawmoor-26-2The boys and girls were lucky enough to meet Mark Deans, who is a Scottish Open Water swimmer.    He talked to the boys and girls about his time in Australia where he was training for 3 months.  He said he preferred it to being in a pool as it was more challenging and exciting.  He told the children he even saw a shark during this training!

Mark has a true love for water if he’s not swimming you’ll find him by the sea kite surfing which is his favourite sporting activity (apart from swimming obviously)!

Introducing Primary 1!

DSCN3461We are thrilled to bits with the progress Primary 1 are making at Uplawmoor Primary School.  They now know their way around the school and have been busy establishing class rules and learning about life as an Uplawmoor Primary School pupil.  Welcome to each and every one of you!

P4/5 go swimming at Eastwood High School

IMG_1674Primary 4/5 are taking part in swimming lessons as part of their PE programme this term.   We are working with Mr Reid at Eastwood High and it is a great opportunity for us to visit their fantastic swimming facilities.  We have even spotted a few familiar ex-Uplawmoor Primary School faces when the bell goes!

Hooray for our new House Captains!

The Primary 7s impressed us last Friday with their pitches for House Captains at our assembly.  We had powerpoint presentations, a rap, speeches, paper games, animations, music and even a home movie!  All of the pupils listened carefully, then gathered in their classrooms to vote for their favourite pitch and here are the results:
