P4/5 Host a Movie Afternoon

The boys and girls of Uplawmoor had the pleasure of attending a movie afternoon at the Mure Hall as part of Primary 4/5’s Micro Tyco enterprise topic.

The whole school enjoyed popcorn and snacks and settled down to a screening of ‘Bugsy Malone’. A big thank you to the parents who gave up their time to ensure the event ran smoothly. We look forward to the ‘Skills’ auction on Friday which will raise even more money for a wonderful cause. Well done P4/5!

Enterprise with P4/5

Micro

Primary 4/5  from Uplawmoor are currently taking part in a topic called Micro-Tyco. Micro-Tyco is a challenge where children are given £1 and challenged to grow it into as much money as possible in four weeks.

At the end of the four weeks all the money created by the pupils will be invested by a charity called WildHearts who will provide loans to small businesses in the developing world helping them earn their way out of poverty with dignity.

cinemaSo far we have made door stops, bracelets and wine charms and sold them at the village shop. We are running a weekly tuck shop at school and have planned a movie afternoon on Friday 27th February at the Mure Hall.  The cost of entry is £2.50 and there will be juice and sweets available for the children to buy.  Any child who does not bring money to buy a movie ticket will stay at school with a member of staff.

We are also running a Skills Auction which will take place in school in the afternoon of 7th March at 2.15pm.  This is where rather than goods people donate time, skills or special treats to attract bids.

Common promises offered are; baby-sitting, car washing, ironing, guitar lessons, dog walking, computer help, aromatherapy session, gardening, painting and decorating or the use of holiday home

The list really is endless. Everyone can do something. If you have a business such as hairdressing, massage, reflexology offering an auction freebie can also be a great way to market your services to a wide audience and gain new customers. If you would like to take part please contact Mrs Orr on with a note of your name and the skill you would be prepared to offer. You do not have to have a child at the school to take part. We would love to involve as many people in the village as possible.

Please help us out as all the money is going to a really worthwhile cause.  The more the merrier!

P6/7 are called to Glasgow’s High Court!

photo The pursuers and defenders of Primary 6 and 7 were called to court on Monday 26th January in the case of Mrs Telfer vs Talk and Text Communications.   Uplawmoor Primary School took part in the West of Scotland category and were competing against two other Primary Schools in Glasgow.

The children did a wonderful job and representing their clients and have worked so hard to ensure they were prepared for court.  Amongst the children we had witnesses, solicitors, reporters, gown makers and court artists.
A special well done to Niamh who was the defending solicitor and Erin who was the pursuing solicitor.  You both took on a very important (and scary) role and made us all very proud.

This was a once in a lifetime experience for the children and allowed them to apply their learning in a real life context.   We await the results…

Show Racism the Red Card

Primary 6/7 were lucky enough to work with Dee and Derek from Show Racism the Red Card last Monday.  The morning started with some football activities with Derek which helped us work in a team and treat each other fairly. Dee worked with the us in the afternoon and explained what racism actually is and taught us to treat everybody with respect no matter what colour their skin is, what nationality they are, what their beliefs are and what religion they may be.    Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s anti-racism educational charity and was established in January 1996. The organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. The majority of the campaign’s output is the delivery of education to young people and adults.

P7 Lord Provost Debate

Primary 6/7 were invited to Eastwood House on Friday 9th January to debate in front of the Lord Provost.  They chose the motion “every child should use an Ipad in primary school instead of jotters and textbooks“.

The children worked hard on their opposing and proposing arguements and the the final vote was against the motion (8 votes against, 7 votes for).

Do you enjoy Sewing? Do have have some spare time to help?

Primary 6/7 are looking for some help to make 3 barrister gowns for our pupil solicitors.  We are competing against other schools in Scotland’s Mock Court Case initiative and our solicitors have to wear correct attire.

If you can sew (and preferably own a machine) Megan-Jane  and Emily would be delighted to receive some help as it is their job, as gown makers, to create gowns for their solicitors.

Please contact the school on 0141 570 7460 if you could help.

We are also looking to source some more black material, therefore, if you have any spare material that could be of use please do not hesitate to let us know.

A big than you to Mrs Sanders who, already, has helped us in our search for material!

Thank you in advance, for your help.   P6/7

Christmas Fayre – Update

The Uplawmoor PSA would like to thank everyone who worked so hard over the last few weeks and on Friday and Saturday in particular, to make the School Christmas Fayre such a success.

P6/7 worked hard in the beauty Parlour painting and nails and faces and tattooting and decorating crazy hairstyles, as well as running the toy stall and mini tombola.

Thank you also to all the parents and staff manning the tea rooms, selling crafts, minding Santa and running raffles and knocking doors to sell tickets.  Thank you to all our stall holders and everyone who came to support us on Saturday.  It was very busy with lots of gifts and beautiful crafts to choose from.

Massive thanks also to Mr Wright who had to come in very early to make sure the tea urn was on and to Mrs Watson for her endless patience answering questions, printing tickets and most importantly opening the door for us many times!

We are delighted to report that the Christmas Fayre raised a whopping £1374 this year.  Well done to all!

We look forward to helping out at the Carols and Shortbread and would like to wish all the pupils, staff and parents of Uplawmoor Primary School a very Happy Christmas!
