Sports volunteers

East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Department is looking for enthusiastic sports volunteers to assist in our sport and physical activity sessions after school, weeknights, weekends and during the school holidays.

Our next volunteer recruitment night will be on Thursday 26th January at Eastwood High School, PE classroom 6.00 – 7.00pm. This is for students, parents or anyone who would like to volunteer and get more experience working with children.

ProJudo – Judo Sessions for Beginners: P1-7

Your child has received a Judo taster session in Giffnock Primary  from Projudo Head Coach, Brian Long. The idea of taster sessions within schools is to give children an opportunity to experience a new sports/activity that they may have not participated in locally. The children really enjoyed the judo session and were enthusiastic about the prospect of joining a judo club in East Renfrewshire. Projudo is offering session in a variety of locations in East Renfrewshire and full details are in the letter below:

cricket cluster club

Cricket Cluster Club: Thursdays 5-6pm @ Woodfarm High School.

Over the last few years our Active School Co-ordinator has arranged a Cricket club for pupils across the primary schools in P5-7. The club is run by East Renfrewshire Cricket Club and delivered by coach Ammar Ashraf. The pupils will get a chance to play lots of games and learn the basic skills of cricket. The club will run in the small gym at Woodfarm or if weather is nice run outside on the pitches.

Club starts: Thursday 2nd February- 9th March 2017.

Cost of club is £12.00.

Cricket Club

Please return the slip if your child is interested in attending the club by Friday 20th January to your school office.

You will receive a confirmation letter to state your child has a place and will be asked to bring payment on the first night.

Disability/ASN Karate

Marie Baxter, Active Schools Co-Ordinator is working with the Scottish Karate Governing Body to create new karate classes for pupils in East Renfrewshire who have a disability or ASN. Scottish Karate is looking  to develop this in East Renfrewshire and across Scotland to try and produce future athletes that could compete in the Paralympics.

The club will run at St Ninian’s High School and this is open to all pupils in mainstream schools, both primary and secondary and who have a physical or learning disability or visual impairment or ASN.

The club will start on Monday 23rd January 2017 and run from 5.10pm-5.50pm @ St Ninian’s High school. Further information and contact details are contained below:

Sport Relief March 2016

Sports reliefDear Parent/Carer,

Your child will be participating in our Daily Mile Sport Relief event on Friday 18th March 2016.

Each class will be running/walking a mile that day in the school playground. Should the weather be inclement the event will take place indoors. Pupils can wear trainers on the day and can ‘jazz up’ their trainers for the event.

Sport Relief wrist bands will be on sale for your child to buy the week beginning Monday 14th March 2016. The wristbands cost £1 with all proceeds going to Sport Relief.

Engaging Parents in Physical Education Event Information

From Education Scotland:

Lornshill Academy, Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Saturday 30th January 2016, 9.30am – 1pm

This event is suitable for both parents/carers and practitioners with responsibility for learners in all sectors. The aim of the event is to enable delegates to develop their understanding of how high quality Physical Education can support learning across the curriculum. The day will comprise of theory and practical sessions* which will demonstrate this, in addition to exemplifying how a strong home-school partnership can extend the learning experience. There will also be opportunities to hear key messages and engage in conversation with presenters, colleagues and parents.  Children are welcome – there will be PE experiences for them to participate in.

*Participation in the practical sessions is not compulsory, although is encouraged. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

Active Schools

New  Primary Table Tennis Club: P5-P7

Our Active Schools Coordinator, Mrs Baxter, has organised a new Table Tennis Club for all pupils in Primary 5-7. The club is part of Woodfarm’s Commonwealth Games legacy, which aims to encourage our pupils to participate in sport, leading in turn to a healthier lifestyle. The club will run on Mondays at Woodfarm High School from 4.45pm-5.45pm. Mr Merriman, a P.E teacher from Woodfarm, will lead the club. Table tennis is extremely popular in Woodfarm, with many pupils attending the after school club and playing in tournaments. We are sure our primary pupils will enjoy the experience.

Active School Awards:

Mrs Baxter will attend our assembly before the end of term to issue awards to pupils who have been selected by coaches, teachers and volunteers. Pupils have been chosen due to their excellent sportsmanship, determination and respect for others and the leaders whilst at the clubs. Awards will be issued to pupils who have also excelled in the sport/ activity.

Tri-Athlon event- Wednesday 25th February 2015.

Around 25 pupils have been attending a Tri-athlon club at Woodfarm High. They have been training hard and have been getting fitter every week. Over the past 5 weeks they have been training towards a mini Tri-athlon event which will be held in Woodfarm High on Wednesday 25th February from 4-5pm. Medals will be given out to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Fencing Course at Eastwood High School

Scottish Fencing, working with East Renfrewshire Active Schools,  is providing an opportunity for pupils to experience the Olympic sport of Fencing. The new club is aimed at the P4-7 age group and will introduce pupils to the basics of fencing. Active Schools Information

P5: Cricket Festival

All pupils from primary 5 attended Clydesdale Cricket club on Wednesday 27th August to participate in a Cricket Festival organised by our Active School Co-ordinator, Marie Baxter. This was part of their curriculum programme they received before the summer during their P.E lessons. All children enjoyed the festival and got the opportunity to be coached by the club coaches and also played a number of games throughout the morning.

Cluster Clubs

This term on the back of the successful 2014 Commonwealth Games there will be a number of cluster after-school clubs running in all primary and secondary schools. Please keep an eye out for letters that will be issued over the next few weeks for all our after school clubs.

Some of the clubs running across the cluster are Judo, Karate, Golf, Dance Fusion, Yoga and Tennis. Marie Baxter is working in partnership with local community clubs to try and engage more children in sports and utilise the local clubs, providing more opportunities for children to be active and involved in sports.

Commonwealth Gold Medallist visit to schools

Marie Baxter has arranged a GOLD medallist to visit all the schools across the cluster on Friday 5th September… This is a fantastic opportunity for all our pupils….who could it be? All will be revealed soon….

Giffnock Primary Active Schools are looking for any parents to volunteer to help with after school clubs!!  

If you have a hidden talent or played for a team or still participate in sport then we are looking for parents to help expand our current after school programme.  

We will provide any training you would like and will support you every step of the way!
