Science

Welcome to Eastwood High Science Department!

Within the Science department you will be engaged in all sorts of scientific topics such as “Planet Earth”, “Forces Electricity and Waves”, “Biological Systems”, “Materials” and “Topical Science”. Since science is an important aspect within our everyday lives we not only focus on scientific knowledge, but also on the scientific skills you will need to develop in order to become a successful and confident individual.

Within S1 you will cover topics from Biology, Chemistry and Physics and be given the chance to participate in and design scientific experiments, whilst learning how to stay safe within a laboratory. Skills such as report writing, analysing data (by calculating averages and percentages) and presenting data (by producing bar charts and line graphs) will be taught, as numeracy and literacy skills are very important within the sciences too!

Within S2 you will continue to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics and you will usually be given the chance to rotate topic teachers to give you a more in-depth and thorough introduction to each of the sciences.

Throughout S1 and S2 you will complete end of unit assessments. The results of these assessments along with your skills related tasks will be used to provide you with guidance as to which subjects you would like to choose to study further in middle and upper school.

Out-with the classroom, the Science department offers lots of fun, exciting and unique experiences. We have a number of pupils who attend Science Club every week and take part in fun experiments that they don’t get a chance to do in class. Through the Science Club you also have the chance to gain a CREST Award, which is a great addition to any CV.

You will also get to take part in a Science Networking Day. This is when a number of individuals who work within scientific professions (such as: doctors, engineers and software designers) provide you with lots of interesting information and you can ask them first-hand how they chose their career and what their career involves.
