Physical Education Higher

Pupils undertaking the Higher Qualification can expect to gain the following skills from the course:

  • Develop a broad and comprehensive range of complex movement and performance skills. Demonstrate these safely and effectively across a range of challenging contexts
  • Analyse mental, emotional, social and physical factors that impact on performance
  • Understand how skills, techniques and strategies combine to produce an effective performance
  • Analyse and evaluate performance to enhance personal effectiveness

 

Experiences that the pupils will encounter:

Pupils will be able to develop and demonstrate a broad and comprehensive range of complex skills in challenging contexts. Learners will also develop the ability to use strategies to make appropriate decisions for effective performance. In addition to this they will analyse performance, looking specifically at the impact of mental, emotional, social and physical factors and how to develop any weaknesses identified.

By actively participating in physical activities, learners will demonstrate initiative, decision-making and problem-solving. They will experience a range of roles and responsibilities that will enable them to develop their interpersonal skills.

Skills that the pupils need:

Entry onto the Higher course in S5 will be subject to the pupil having demonstrated a comfortable pass in the internal Factors Impacting Performance unit and Portfolio at National 5. Pupils are also required to have a sound pass at National 5 English.

UCAS points gained through all National awards can be used to help secure a place on a huge variety of college and university courses. Some courses may have specific subject requirements and should therefore be checked prior to making your option choices.

 

Assessments

Physical Education Performance:

The candidates will develop their ability to plan, prepare for, effectively perform and evaluate personal performance in one physical activity. At Higher this performance will constitute 60% of the total mark.

 

Final SQA exam in May/June of S5:

This final exam will assess the pupil’s ability to integrate and apply knowledge, understanding and skills from across the units. Evidence will be collated by the pupil on an ongoing basis during the course. At Higher the written exam will carry 40% of the total mark.
