Successful Learners during Science Week (part 1)

Our first experiment – making a dancing man with a white board pen and water.

Exciting times as we all focussed on a webcast where engineers spoke about developing Patrick’s Fair-ground garden design into reality. We learned a lot about having to make small changes to make it possible.

The Transition boys had a great morning actively engaging with robots! The boys showed great manners and listened well to instructions so they could confidently use remote control cameras, wind turbines and a trebuchet to name a few!

The class then took part in an exercise looking a design inspired by nature and had a chance to experience using a microscope.

The class also took part in a very colourful experiment. Each boy made a prediction about the number of colours in each ink. The boys then completed a chromatography experiment to separate the colours. We discovered that most inks in our pens contain a mix of colours.

In the afternoon the boys experienced the planetarium where we learned about the next steps in moon exploration.

On the way back to class the boys had time to explore and investigate the movement of Slinkys.

Once back in class the boys took part in a moon quiz where they scored 8/9.

Science Week – Making Slime!

* SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS, EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS, CONFIDENT INDIVIDUALS, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS *

Today’s science experiment involved us working together to make slime. We used blue food colouring to turn the slime a lovely blue colour and all participated in the mixing of the ingredients.

We enjoyed exploring our slime by stretching, rolling and squeezing it!

Science Week Experiments

This week the Sungazers will get the chance to participate actively in lots of different science experiments and activities.  This afternoon we have had great fun trying out 4 experiments – ‘Cornflour Slime’, ‘Balloon Pop’, ‘Make Your Own Volcano’ and ‘Rainbow Milk’.

The pupils all showed a great interest in all of the experiments, paying attention to the steps involved and participating actively when asked to. Balloon Pop  Rainbow Milk  Make your own volcano Cornflour Slime

Science Week – Dancing Raisins

* SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS, RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS, EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS *

The Bluebells class enjoyed observing the changes that take place during today’s Science experiment. We filled a cup with still water and a cup with sparkling water and added some raisins. We noticed how the raisins in the still water sank to the bottom. However, the bubbles in the sparkling water helped the raisins to ‘dance’ by bobbing to the surface. We got very excited by this!

We were also brave enough to taste the sparkling water which some of us had never tried before. Most of us didn’t like it.

Scientific Successful Learners

Apologies there is an issue affecting the upload of pictures. The Transition class started their preparation for Science week next week. NO SPOILERS! They tested their formula and equipment that they will pass to each secondary class next week. Things got a bit messy and wet but fingers crossed every class goes as well as ours!

Fizzing Lovehearts!

* RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS, EFFECTIVE CONTRIBUTORS *

The Bluebells class enjoyed today’s Valentines themed science activity. We used loveheart sweeties and placed them in different liquids. We enjoyed watching what happened! Some fizzed up and some remained the same.

FAOL Science- Rain Cloud in a Jar

We have been learning all about Scotland through out theme and have been investigating the weather. We explored rain through creating our own cloud inside a jar. We made predictions about what might happen, then loved watching the ‘rain’ fall through the cloud.

FAOL – Sciences – Ice Ornaments

The Stars class collected leaves and new buds from the garden, placed in a paint tray then covered them with water. Had the weather been cold we would have put the tray outside to freeze however as the weather has been mild we froze them in the school freezer instead. This produced fantastic ice ornaments which unfortunately soon melted.

FAOL Science

The Sungazers have been learning about vibrations and sound waves as part of their science sessions. Mr Dreghorn kindly brought in some fantastic musical instruments for us to explore.

The first was a Theremin which we played using our hands to vary the sound waves. Ryan was a natural and everyone enjoyed using this the best.  We also used an Ottomatone, a Stylophone, a Flexitone and a Tambura…. lots of new sounds for us to explore. We all enjoyed making lots of noise!!!
