This Week In P1/2S…

WOW WEE have we been bus-eeeey! Let us tell you about our fun and learning-filled week…

Literacy:

We have been learning new sounds. P1 have been learning the ‘ng’ sound and reading words like bang, long and ring. P2 have been learning lots of long I sounds – i_e, ie, y and ie. We have been sorting words out into these different sound categories.

Numeracy:

We have been learning to measure a containers volume and been practising making different volumes by reading the scales and trying to pour in enough and not too much water to reach that point.

We have been using certain words to describe how we know if a number is missing from a number line or 100 square like before, after, in between, rows and columns.

IDL/HWB:

We have been learning about harmful substances and medicines. We learned that it is important to keep these things in cupboards away from children because they can look like sweeties or drinks.

In RME, we were learning about Hinduism and we explored the story Sita and Rama and the Festival of Diwali.

This Week in P1/2S…

It has been hot, hot, hot in the classroom this week but that has not stopped us from working super duper hard! Let us share our learning with you this week…

Literacy:

We are continuing to learn new sounds. P2 have been looking at different ways to read long a sounds – ay, ai (when 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking) and a_e (magic e). P1 have been learning the ck sounds. We noticed the curly c comes first and then the kicking k. It is often at the end of words.

We read two books this week, ‘Tidy’ and ‘The Great Paper Caper’. We compared and contrasted these books – we called it Spot the Difference. We drew and wrote all the things we noticed that were the same and different on a big poster.

Numeracy:

This week in Numeracy we have been learning to explore ’groups of’.  We have been making and identifying ‘groups of’ and P2 have been organising these in arrays.

HWB/IDL:

We have been learning about the emergency services. We know that if somebody becomes really ill, we are in an unsafe situation, if we are in trouble in the sea or there is a fire that an adult cannot put out the number we phone is 999. When we phone we could get a police officer, lifeguard or coastguard, paramedic or fire fighters. We know that if we have a problem that these people would always help us solve it.

This Week in P1/2S…

We cannot believe how quickly the term is going! With only 5 weeks until the summer holidays, we are trying to squeeze in as much learning as we can. Let us tell you what we have been learning and doing this week…

Literacy:

We have met a new reading friend – Chunky Monkey. He spots little words in big words to help you read them. P2 have been using Flippy Dolphin with him to read u_e words and P1 have been reading ch words. We have still been using Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish and Stretchy Snake to help us read too.

This week we have been learning to use our imaginations to write stories. We have been using character and setting cards to help us come up with a story. This week we had stories about genies, super heroes and grannies in the wild jungle, dessert or swimming pool.

Numeracy:

We have continued to learn about money. We have been revising knowing our different coins, adding up coins and working out change from different amounts and using this in our new shop area.

IDL/HWB:

We have been learning about friends and friendships. It is important to have fun with your friends, help them and share with them. We thought of lots of places we want to go with our friends when places open up.

This Week in P1/2S…

It has been another busy week in P1/2S. Even though we had Monday off, we still worked super hard! In fact, we made up for lost time by cramming so much in. Let us tell you about our learning…

Literacy:

In Literacy, we have been learning to predict and visualise.  We were using our imagination to draw pictures from the story “Lost and Found” by Oliver Jeffers. We had to predict what might happen next and then visualise and draw what this might look like.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, we have been learning about money. We have been learning all the different coins and how much they are worth. This has helped us add up and count out coins. Next week, we will try and learn about calculating change using our new shop role play to support this learning.

IDL/HWB:

We have begun our new RSHP topic. We learned about the body and the different parts, including boys’ and girls’ private parts. We then learned the ‘pants’ rule using the Pantasaurus to help us remember that our privates parts are private and only ours.

This Week In P1/2S…

It has been another whistle-stop week in P1/2S! Between building food chains, writing imaginative stories, learning about money and shapes as well as tasting lots of delicious fruits courtesy of Mrs King, we cannot believe how much we have crammed in! Let us tell you all about it…

Literacy:

We explored the book ‘Stuck’. We used this book to help us learn to predict what was going to happen and visualise the pictures.

In the book lots of things got stuck in a tree. We visualised this tree and drew all the things.

Numeracy and Maths:

We have been learning about money. We had to learn about all the different coins that we can find in our purses. We noticed they were different colours – gold, silver, bronze – shapes and sizes.

We have been learning how to count up coins. P1 have been focusing on 1ps and beginning to think about using 2ps. P2 have been using coins up to 20p.

We have been learning about 3D shapes. We explored cubes, cones, cylinder and sphere. We talked about their faces, edges and vertices.

IDL:

We learned about food chains. Food chains show what animals eat. You start with smallest and go up to the biggest.

We made artwork to show the Polar food chain – plankton – fish – seal – polar bear.

This Week in P1/2S…

We have been very excited to return to the classroom after the Easter holidays! We are making the most of our last term as P1/2S and have worked very hard so let us tell you all about our week…

Literacy:

We have been reading ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’. We have explored the book in lots of different ways including making scenes using puppets and changing what happened, sequencing the story and writing our favourite parts.

Numeracy and Maths:

We have been learning to add and take away. To help us we have been practising using Numicon, fingers, cubes and ten frames in different ways to help us add. We all have a favourite strategy and have been using it to help us answer adding and take away sums.

We have been learning to measure how tall penguins are that live in the South Pole. We have been using our counting stick to help us, since it is a metre, and a measuring tape. The Emperor Penguin is the tallest.

IDL:

As Polar Explorers, we have been learning that the Poles are melting. We built scenes to show the ice strong and then what would happen to the animals if the ice melts. We can save the Poles by doing lots of things including not using the car as much and turning off things that use electricity like the Xbox or television.

This Week in P1/2S…

We have continued to work hard and explore the Poles by building igloos this week in P1/2S. Who know how we have found the time to keep learning new sounds, words and number strategies? Let us tell you all about our learning this week…

Literacy:

P1 have been learning the qu sound this week. We have now learned all the sounds in the whole alphabet and so have been practising reading lots of words since we can now read all the sounds! We are excited as we could now read any word in the whole wide world!

P2 have been practising the ow sounds again this week. You can say ow in 2 ways – you can say ou and oa. We have been reading this word and thinking which sound fits best.

Numeracy and Maths:

We have all continued to practise our addition and subtraction skills. We have also been learning to use balance scales. If the balance scale goes up, the item in it is light and if it goes down it is heavy. If both sides of the balance scale float in the middle, then the things in each side weigh the same.

IDL:

We have been learning to not be a lazy log or hefty hog when working in a group. You need to listen to everyone in your group, take turns and join in. We have been learning to do this by building igloos in groups.

This Week in P1/2S…

We are back! Well, we have been for a while, but we are back with our blog to fill you in on all our learning over the past week!

We are loving being back learning, working and playing in our classroom with one another.

Let us tell you what we have been doing this week…

Literacy:

P1 have been learning to read words with x, y and z sounds. We are so proud that we have very nearly learned all the sounds our alphabet letters make! We have been learning the songs that go with them and the actions to help us remember these sounds, using these to help us blend sounds together to read words like box, yes and zip.

P2 have bee learning ow sounds. This is a tricky digraph as it can sound like ou and oa. We have been practising reading and spelling words with these sounds in it, thinking carefully which one sounds right. Words like row and bow make it tricky as they can use both sounds meaning we have to think what sentence they might be used in. We will keep practising these two sounds next week.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, we have all been practising our adding and take away skills.

We have been using Numicon, our maths packs, iPads, number lines, draw pictures and cubes to help us. Next week we are going to begin to think which strategies work best for us.

We have also been learning about weight. We have been practising using a balance scale to see if we can find out if things are lighter or heavier than each other.

IDL – Polar Explorers:

We have been learning about the Inuit people who live in the North Pole/Arctic.  We have learned that they catch and eat fish. They don’t eat many fruits and vegetables as things can’t grow in the North Pole as it is too cold.

They built tents in the summer and igloos to live in the winter. Today, many live in villages.

Their favourite animal is the polar bear. They think it show strong and resilience – things we learn about at assembly with Miss Belford.

We have begun recording what we have learned in our polar explorer books which we are excited to show you when they are full of information!

This Week in P1/2S…

What a Christmassy week it has been!

We were very excited to write our letters to Santa.

We all told Santa what we wanted for Christmas by either drawing, labelling words or writing sentences.

We made sure that we sounded out please (plees) and added this to our letters because we make sure we use our manners in P1/2S!

Some of us asked for technology like x-boxes or playsations, some of us asked for a great story to enjoy, some of us asked for racing cars, some of us asked for guitar pics and other goodies!

Some of P2 made an effort to think about Santa this Christmas since he is so busy! Some asked him what he wanted for Christmas, whether the elves were working hard and some of us even told Santa a joke!

Why does Santa wear a black belt?
Because he is so good at karate – I bet he will love that one!

Today, we posted our letters to Santa at the post box. We had to make sure we wrote the address in our neatest handwriting and put the stamp on the right way.

In Maths, this week we have been leanring all about shapes – some of the shapes we have been learning about include circle, octagon, square, rectangle, triangle, rhombus, hexagon and pentagon.

We were describing them by talking about the number of edges and vertices the shapes have.

We also had an amazing time at our party – we danced, laughed, danced and danced some more! All of the children and adults had a brilliant afternoon – well done to all the children for really embracing the Christmas spirit!
