STEM has been a learning focus for pupils of Dalintober PS & ELC. Lots of activities and investigations took place with input from local STEM Ambassador, Joanna Holbrook, and various other partners. Pupils learned about, amongst other things, life cycles and how they can be recorded, drones and coding, buildings and structures and DNA. The focus ended with a whole ELC/school ‘Sharing Our Learning’ assembly.

Lismore’s Fairtrade Challenge Day
Lismore’s Fairtrade Bake Off
On Thursday 2nd March 2017, Achaleven Primary School joined Lismore Primary School for a Fairtrade Challenge Day. Both Achaleven and Lismore are already Fairtrade Schools, so this year they decided to get together for a Fairtade Fortnight event.
Achaleven pupils travelled by ferry from Oban to Achnacroish where they were greeted by Lismore P7s who accompanied them to the school.
Science & Technology in Kirn’s P6
Kirn’s P6 have been immersing themselves in the world of science and technology. We have been learning about the science of electricity in class using BBC Science and enjoying a fantastic science and technology workshop with STEM ambassador Kirsty Jackson-Stark. Kirsty brought an amazing array of equipment to measure and observe how electrons behave, how electricity can be created and measured, and what it can be used for. All the children enjoyed a really interactive and experimental hands-on day.
Arinagour Primary School presented with their Gold Flag Award for 2016 – 2018.
On Monday 6th March Arinagour Primary School were presented with their Gold Flag Award for 2016 – 2018. This award formally recognises a school’s achievement in putting P.E. and school sport at the heart of planning, practice and ethos.
The presentation was made by Mr Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of SportScotland, Lorna Jackson, Robbie Stewart also from SportScotland and Muriel Kupris from Argyll & Bute Council made the long trip to Coll to attend the presentation. This was very much appreciated.

Bella Beatson visits Strachur Primary School
On Friday 24th February we had a very special visitor at Strachur Primary School – the mascot for the Beatson Hospital in Glasgow, Bella Beatson. The children were very excited and some came to school dressed in black and yellow to match Bella! Bella’s escort, Amy, told the children about the work the Beatson does and how people with cancer can be looked after there. We put our donations in Bella’s collection can and raised £121.30 for the charity.

World Book Day at Strachur Primary
On Friday 3rd of March Strachur Primary School celebrated World Book Day. The children (and staff!) dressed up as characters from books and everyone brought in their favourite book to share with their class. In the afternoon we paired up and read to one another. We had fun talking about books and reading new ones. All children received a voucher for a free WBD book or £1 off a book of their choice. What a fun day!
Strone Primary School pupils enjoy a Technology Workshop
P5-7 pupils at Strone Primary School were offered an after school technology workshop last week led by Mr Steven Simpson, a Modern Apprentice with Learning Technologies at Argyll House.
Two P6 pupils Adam Lawton and Adam Smith gave the following feedback –
‘We learnt how to programme a Spark Plus. It is like a little plastic orb that you can control from your iPad using the ‘Lightning Lab’ App. We learnt how to programme it to go in a square’

Sharing memories with the local community at Minard
On Tuesday 7th February 2017 some of our local community neighbours from Minard village came along to school to share some memories from their childhood. Mrs Hay and her friends brought with them things which reminded them of their childhood and our pupils brought in some things from their earlier childhood. Over teas and biscuits we all shared our ‘memories’ using our memory objects to tell stories. Our neighbours brought old coins, school photos and toys from long ago.

Strone Primary Burns Supper
On Friday 27th January the Parent Council held a Burns supper in Kilmun Hall. It was a fantastic event that was well attended by family and friends from our local community.
Third Green Flag for Dunoon Primary!

Lights Camel Action P1-P3 at Dunoon Primary
Christmas time was a time of great celebration for the infants P1-P3 at Dunoon Primary School as they practised for and presented the most wonderful version of ‘Lights Camel Action’! Susan McEwan produced and oversaw the whole show and what a show it was! The smiles at both the afternoon and evening showing from friends and families were indeed confirmation that the Nativity was a complete and roaring success.

Virtual Games Winners
Primary 4 are delighted to announce that one of their teams, The Flames, have won the Virtual Games for the Primary 4-7 age group. What an achievement! The winning team; Lewis, Anton, McKenzie, Cara and Aoife recorded the highest scores in the competition. Well done to them. Mr McGregor, who organised the event, came to the school yesterday to present them with medals and some P.E. Kit for their use.
Regional Winner of the French Drama Competition
La Concours de la francophonie
Well done to the P5 class of Dunoon Primary School for winning the regional final of the French Drama competition. The class were involved in an interdisciplinary learning project about the Titanic. They then developed a French drama linked with this project and sang a traditional French song about a sailor and the sea. Their winning entry can be seen HERE . They have now been entered into the national final. We wish them every success in the next stage of the competition.
P7 Young Leaders Clubs at Dalintober PS
P7 pupils at Dalintober PS have launched a programme of Young Leaders Lunchtime Clubs for younger pupils, beginning with Technology and Dance Clubs this week. The P7s plan, resource, lead and evaluate the clubs – building their leadership and organisational skills and inspiring their young school mates.
BMT Masterclass at Dalintober PS & ELC
Dalintober PS & ELC were delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Dalziell as part of the school’s commitment to developing the acclaimed ‘Better Movers & Thinkers’ programme across the whole school and ELC. Dr Dalziell is highly regarded for his work and research in this area and worked with the staff and pupils on the theory and practice of BMT and the marriage of healthy, active bodies and healthy, active minds – we look forward to welcoming him back in March.
‘Lismore goes Alpine!’
To get the New Year off to a flying start Lismore Primary School had a “French Alpine Ski Week” to celebrate all things alpine and wintry! We have taken the overall theme in French of the alpine year and have a large changing display in the classroom. This week, we imagined we were all off skiing to the French Alps!
Nativity at Strachur Primary and Pre-5
We are very proud of our children who took part in the nativity plays in December. We had a Pre-5 nativity and a P1-4 nativity this year. Everyone was very excited and the singing was brilliant. Some children had lines to say and they did very well. The narrators kept the story moving along and everyone enjoyed wearing their costumes and using their props. Thank you to Reverend McCulloch for having us at the church and to Sheena Dowse for filming.
Road Safety Calendar Competition winner announced
The whole of Lochnell Primary School were in attendance for an award presentation on Tuesday of this week when Tara Heritage-Crabb was announced as the winner of the 2017 Road Safety Calendar Competition. Tara, a P5 pupil, was very surprised but thrilled to be this year’s winner. Her brightly coloured picture, bearing the message ‘Wait till the red goes green’ was selected as the header for the 2017 calendar. Judging was again incredibly difficult for the Road Safety Unit who received 1,673 entries from 43 of our schools.

Strone Primary School Christmas Show
Pupils from Strone Primary School performed their Christmas Show ‘ Away with the Manger’ to a full house of parents, families and friends from the local community on Wednesday 14th December.
A nativity tale with a comic twist, ‘Away with the Manger’ gave the children a chance to show off their acting and singing talent, with some great comedy moments, which had the audience crying with laughter.
