Rockfield orienteers win Inter- school Championship

Rockfield more Fun 1Following a short period of training 32 children from Rockfield P4-7 took part in the OLI Interschool Orienteering championships on Friday at Ganavan in glorious sunny weather. The children had a fantastic experience and were great ambassadors for the school. They all attempted to navigate their way around various courses at great speed with some children achieving first, second or third place but all children put in a fantastic effort and tried their very best.

‘World of Work’ Week at Dalintober PS and ELCC

Dalintober World of Work Week  SpringbankPupils at Dalintober & ELCC embarked on a journey of discovery through the world of work.
The week involved a range of visits to places of work in the local area and the school also welcomed a wide variety of visitors through its doors to work with classes.
ELCC had a visit from our School Crossing Patroller and the children loved taking turns to hold the lollipop.

Rhu P4 Healthy Sandwich – Food Technology

Rhu PS Food tech 1 May 2016Rhu P4 recently took part in a Food Technology project where they designed their own healthy sandwich. The children found out more about sandwich fillings, identified different food groups, found out about food hygiene and tasted a range of breads before making their healthy sandwich and eating it for lunch! The children brought their own ingredients and equipment on the day and successfully combined healthy ingredients to make some delicious looking sandwiches!

Duchess Woods Cross Country

Rhu duchess 29th April 2016Speedy runners from Rhu scooped top prizes in the Duchess Woods Cross Country relays.
In the Primary 6 girls race Sasha Walker, Louisa Brown and Roisin Kavanagh all put in top class performances and galloped home in first place to take the gold medals. While the nippy boys team of Ross Carmichael, Max Brannan and William Harrison put up a strong performance against toug competition to secure third place. However, their combined times put them in the top spot for winning the overall Primary 6 shield.

A Push for the Big Pedal

Pupils and staff of Barcaldine Primary School have been making use of the Sustrans cycle track, on a daily basis, as part of the Big Pedal fortnight. Today the local pre-5s, and parents, joined us for a long cycle and a picnic in the sun. The children were such confident cyclists that poor Mrs.Watson, who was supervising come of the younger children, had to run all the way to keep up! Tayvallich P4-7 – Action in an Emergency

Tayvallich First aid training 1Pupils at Tayvallich PS have been learning how to save a life. On Tuesday 19 April Mr. Andy Craven talked to the P4-7 children about the correct methods of dealing with cardiac arrest. He discussed protocols and the children were made aware of the physical signs of a person who was unwell and suffering cardiac arrest.

Tayvallich and Glassary Young Leaders

Tayvallich and Glassary Young leaders 1Primary 6 pupils from Glassary and Tayvallich joined together on a lovely sunny day to be trained as Young Leaders by Active Schools Co-ordinator, Eilidh MacPherson.
They brainstormed the personal qualities and skills that they would need to be effective sports leaders. Great fun was had by all when trying out the games and then planning how to deliver these games to groups of younger children.
At the end of the day the P6 pupils had a go at teaching some fun active games to Tayvallich’s P1-4 class.

Dunoon Primary School Health Week

DPS Health week 1This week the whole school have been involved in lots of physical activity including karate, shinty, orienteering, tennis, fitness dance and yoga. The older children also had presentations from Police Scotland, local Health Visitors and the assistant manager from the local Oxfam shop who all gave very interesting talks with very important messages regarding physical and emotional wellbeing.

Busy Time at Southend Primary School!

Southend Busy Time 1251 2Pupils at Southend Primary School have been very busy learning about the processes involved from farm and sea to fork.
We have been looking at different food groups, ‘The Eatwell Plate’ and the importance of a balanced diet. Members of the local community have visited to enrich our learning in this area. Jen Campbell discussed fishing; how the fish is caught, different species of fish found in our local area and some information about the work carried out by her husband and son, who are fishermen. We saw live crabs which they had caught and tasted crab pate.

DGS Autism Awareness

DGS Autism AwarenessApril 1st 2016 was Autism Awareness Day in Dunoon Grammar School. The Learning Centre pupils prepared a Power Point presentation to show at house time and made a whole army of gingerbread cookies to sell on the day. The whole school was invited to design jigsaw pieces which were joined together for display in the Forum, showing that DGS supports Autism awareness. The event was a great success so well done to everyone involved. A total of £120 was raised for our local autism support organisation: Autism Argyll.

DGS Learning Centre pupils visit Ardroy Outdoor Centre

DGS Learning Centre pupils visit Ardroy Outdoor CentreDunoon Grammar School learning centre pupils have returned from a big adventure at Ardroy Outdoor Centre on the shore of Loch Goil. This three day residential formed part of their John Muir Silver Award and involved learning centre pupils exploring hillsides, beaches and taking to the water in canoes. They built dens, made fire and some even made a mud slide down the hill!

Beach Clean at Strone

Strone beach clean 1P1-4 pupils at Strone Primary School are involved in a 6 week Beach and Marine Litter Project with the GRAB Trust. The most interesting discovery so far is a Dogfish skeleton. Whilst exploring the beach the pupils are also making a positive difference by collecting sackfuls of beach litter.

Sport Relief’ Fundraising at Dalintober PS and ELCC

Dalintober Sport Relief TyresPupils of Dalintober PS and ELCC held a number of fundraising events for ‘Sport Relief’, including bootcamps, a zumbathon and fitness challenges. The pupils raised a fantastic £1619.18 for the charity and would like to thank members of the school community for their kind and generous donations and sponsors.
