Port Ellen Go Golfing

On Monday afternoon Primary 4 & 5 were lucky enough to have a trip to the Machrie golf course on Islay to practice their golfing skills. Shona Ramsey had spent the term teaching them to putt, chip and hit the ball in the correct way, but it was so much better to get an opportunity to have a shot on a real golf course. The Machrie is in a beautiful setting right by the sea and it was a very calm and peaceful way to spend the afternoon. Some groups practiced putting with Mrs Clark, some chipping with Shona and some got to have a go on the real course with real clubs with Mr Gairns! Continue reading Port Ellen Go Golfing →

Recent Enterprise visits at Innellan Primary School

On Monday 18 June 2012 pupils at Innellan Primary School, as part of their Health & Wellbeing “National Smile Month” project activities, were delighted to welcome again our two dental nurses Fiona and Rhona from Dunoon Community Hospital. All P1 – P5 pupils were encouraged to participate in a mini drama session where they were allowed to dress up as a dentist or a dental nurse and carry out a mouth inspection using real dental tools. The excellent “Curriculum for Excellence” workshop concluded with all pupils receiving super “goody bags” which were very gratefully received. Building bridges between Luing and Easdale Primary Schools

Easdale and Luing school communities are part of the shared head teacher pilot.
The children in the schools both requested an opportunity to work closer with their peer groups. The nursery children took the lead by taking a day out for a Teddy Bears Picnic in the ancient Hazel woods of Kilbrandon that stretch between the two schools. This was followed up with P4-7 joining forces for 3 days away with Stramash taking part in challenging team building activities, forging friendships for future learning opportunities.

Olympic Fever! at Lochgilphead Primary

Over the last term Primary 2, 3 and 4 pupils at Lochgilphead Primary School joined together to work in co-operative groups to learn about the Olympics.

The children decided to have an Olympic Games event to celebrate their topic. All the groups worked towards this event by planning, organising and managing the 20 different sports stations. It was a fantastic day and the children were very proud that their hard work produced a successful event!

Luing community sports 2012

Luing Primary School hosted their annual community sports event on the playfields of Luing for all ages. The staff and parent council organised the games for all ages, BBQ and raffle. The islanders turned out to join in the event, supporting the children from the Primary school.
Competitors of all ages competed in all events. The wet net obstacle course was popular with all ages and was followed by the whole island tug-of-war – Cullipool verses the rest of the world. Run For The Top at Kilchrenan

Kilchrenan Primary held it’s annual hill race, as part of it’s school sport’s day, on Thursday 14th June.
The pupils are challenged to run to the top of one of the three single track roads that lead to school. This challenging event, which all pupils try, tests fitness and stamina, and that has seen a noticeable improvement following the decision to hold weekly Forest Schools events. Bowmore Primary Mini-Olympics 2012!

The sun split the sky on the morning of the 18th June and the sports pitch burst into life! All classes were piped in by Nigel Morris. Class banners were held high, flags were waved wildly – the Olympic parade had begun! The opening ceremony was a blaze of colour and diversity! After a whole school song (instigated by Rachael Morrison), P4/5 started with an emotional relay race with their Olympic torches to ‘Chariots of Fire’. Orienteering event at Castle Toward

On Thursday 31st May 2012 Toward Primary School, Fiona MacLean (PE Teacher) and Lindsay Mitchell (Active Schools) hosted an Orienteering Event at Castle Toward. This annual event gives P7 pupils from throughout Cowal the opportunity to participate in a challenging and energetic event where they have to use the skills they have been taught by reading maps, using compasses and getting lots of exercise. Olympic Themed Youth Games in Oban

A spectacle of dance, music and colour, inspired by the Olympic Games was showcased at the opening ceremony of the Argyll and Bute Youth Games in Oban on Thursday 14th June.
A record 598 of our first and second year pupils from Argyll and Bute’s secondary schools staged their own version of the Olympics to welcome in Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week.

‘Lochbeg’s’ momentous occasion!

22nd May was an exciting day for the pupils and staff of Lochnell and Dunbeg Primary Schools, or ‘Lochbeg’ as they were renamed for this momentous occasion. The two schools engaged in the ultimate in interdisciplinary learning for the whole term from Easter onwards as they competed for their country for prestigous online medals. The pupils across the schools were split into six teams and could earn medals in every aspect of school and out-of-school life if their efforts correlated with one of the six Olympic and Paralympic values, such as friendship, fairness, determination etc. Continue reading ‘Lochbeg’s’ momentous occasion! →

Bookbug ‘Get Fit’ Olympics Celebration

On Tuesday 12th June, the Oban Bookbug team took over Atlantis Leisure and invited all the local participants to a Bookbug ‘Get Fit’ Olympics Celebration.  The session was crammed with active songs and dances featuring the specially penned Olympic Torch song.  Everyone took part and there were 65 adults and children in attendance.

Olympic Torch Relay Trip

On Friday 8th June as part of our Curriculum for Excellence project on Ancient Greece and the Olympics 10 pupils, 3 members of staff and 2 Parent Council Members from Innellan Primary School travelled to Port Glasgow to see part of the Olympic Torch Relay. A very exciting time was had by all as we stood patiently waiting for the historic torch to pass us. Organisers in Port Glasgow did themselves proud by providing music, free flags and safe cordoned off clear viewing areas. Pupils and staff were delighted to also receive free Bank of Scotland Olympic ribbon flags. JUBILEE LUNCH AT KILCREGGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL

What a beautiful day for a “Special Lunch”. Kilcreggan Primary School held it’s Jubilee Lunch outside today. The sun shone and everybody enjoyed a lovely buffet. Our thanks go to Mrs Reid and Mrs Stewart our Catering staff for preparing such a superb feast and decorating the the tables to make the day so special.

St Columba’s get cooking for the Queen

Primary 7 pupils at St. Columba’s Primary School in Oban have been announced as one of four winners of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall’s competition inviting schools to create a special Diamond Jubilee menu for The Queen. The prize winning team of Samantha Parkinson, Jessica Swan, Rebecca Campbell, Nathan Allan, Jack Forgrieve, Lucy Anderson, Niamh MacKenzie and Robert Krolikowski will travel to Buckingham Palace on 15 June to see their recipes prepared by the Royal Chef and will help serve the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall at a special reception. CHRISTIAN AID NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Rosneath Primary School were very excited to be taking part in this annual Tournament at the Lomond Sports Hall in Helensburgh. We played against teams from other Helensburgh and Peninsula schools. We were DELIGHTED that our little school won a Bronze medal. We played our hearts out and everyone is SO proud of us. Our joint Team Captains look so happy and the main point of the evening was that everyone had great fun meeting up together and cheering each other on. Port Ellen Beach Clean

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
On Friday afternoon the whole school took part in a beach clean of our adopt a beach Leodamus Bay in Port Ellen. It was a lovely if windy afternoon, and the tide was very far out so we were able to access parts of the beach we do not normally manage, and gather a large quantity of rubbish. Apart from the usual suspects such as tyres and plastic string, we also cleared an old umbrella, boat rudder and half a canoe. Polly Mather, the Islay and Jura beach ranger, was there to help and provide the bags. In total we collected half a tonne of rubbish, earning the school a donation of £110 from REJIG.
