The sun split the sky on the morning of the 18th June and the sports pitch burst into life! All classes were piped in by Nigel Morris. Class banners were held high, flags were waved wildly – the Olympic parade had begun! The opening ceremony was a blaze of colour and diversity! After a whole school song (instigated by Rachael Morrison), P4/5 started with an emotional relay race with their Olympic torches to ‘Chariots of Fire’. The crowd were then treated to a P.1/2 swirling ribbon dance and the P3/4 Olympic Rings dance.
The Gaelic Unit added a traditional flavour as they performed a Scottish country dance. P5/6 put on a jaw-dropping gymnastic display to the ‘Rocky’ theme and Lady Gaga provided the music to P6/7’s swinging poi routine!
The games began and so did the fun! Children threw wellies, tossed mini cabers, ran races, jumped like kangaroos and competed in many other activities! It was amazing to see so much participation and enjoyment. The PTA provided a well-earned snack midway to keep energy levels up – thank you very much! The Islay High School sports leaders also did a tremendous job, supporting children and teachers alike at each event. They were so organised and such good fun!
The medal ceremony ended the games and each child received their Olympic medal from Mrs MacDougall – the smiles on their faces said it all!
We would like to extend a HUGE than you to Karen Siddall for not only training the children for each event but for organising it so meticulously. We can only hope that London can match up to Bowmore!
