Senior pupils in Tarbert Academy took part in a Moral Conference at the end of October. This ‘Question Time’ style event found pupils asking questions about Scotland’s future, footballers’ wages, the issues surrounding foreign aid at a time of recession and current debates on marriage. Pupils achieved highly in setting questions, taking part in debate and listening sensitively to a wide variety of views. Anne Paterson praised the pupils highly – as did the panel members. Football Crazy Day in Easdale School

Easdale Primary School were football crazy with a difference recently.  After some divergent thinking about how we could use balls but not play a game of football the children planned a range of fun learning activities.  The six mixed age groups from Pre 5 – P7 donned their designer t-shirts and explored maths, language, art and PE activities including time dribble, number ball, word shoot, roll the marble, ball art attack, coconut shy and dribble and shoot.  At half time they enjoyed some football poems and learned a song called ‘Fitba Crazy’.  When the final whistle blew all teams voted the day a great success and closed the day with their team chant and mascot. Let’s Eat, Kilchrenan!

Kilchrenan Primary has been eating its way around the world.  Using the book, “Let’s Eat”, pupils used the experiences and cultures of other children, to reflect on their diets, life styles and skills.  They learned about the importance of breakfast, and the wide variety of foods used in celebrations.  Each stop on the journey involved a session cooking, baking and, of course, eating.

The children prepared Condensed Milk Pudding from South Africa, Salsa from Mexico, Spicy Eggs from Thailand, chocolate cake with yoghurt from France and Jamie Oliver’s chocolate cookies. Continue reading Let’s Eat, Kilchrenan!

Toothbrushing Skills

Nursery and Primary 1 children at Lochnell were visited by Yvonne Sloss, the dental nurse, who reminded us how to stay healthy by eating and drinking the right things at meal times.  She also showed us how to brush our teeth properly so that we won’t get any holes in them … we all agreed that we didn’t want toothache.

All of the children were given new toothbrushes to use at home as well as the brushes they have in school.  Yvonne had a giant sized toothbrush that we got to brush huge teeth with.  Thanks Yvonne!

Butter Fingers!

As part of this term’s food and farming work, P6/5 in Garelochhead have been investigating dairy products and the journey they make to reach our plates.  We have been looking at dairy farming and the milk industry in Scotland. We also tasted many of  the different types of milk and discussed the similarities and differences.  We then went on to making our own butter.  It was really interesting to see the cream separate into curds and buttermilk.

The butter was put into the fridge overnight and in the morning we had hot toast with our butter. P7/6 loved the taste of the butter too.
