SCOTA-LAND IN PORT ELLEN

On Wednesday morning Leigh from the Mull Theatre group came to a workshop for P6/7 on creating props for the theatre. The props will then be used for a performance on Islay of the groups latest play called Scota-land. We made a map of the Isle of Mickle for their play Scota-land and we also made artifacts that will go in the pretend museum. We made models of black houses, a beautiful crown from copper leaves, ancient runic writing, clay pots and a dinosaur model that all went on the island. The Island was made by everyone passing a crayon along and doing squiggly lines. Continue reading SCOTA-LAND IN PORT ELLEN

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

Barcaldine Primary took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event in support of MacMillan Cancer today. Primary 5-7 went along this morning to Poppies Garden Centre in Dunbeg by Oban.  We helped Poppies by entertaining all their customers while they enjoyed their cuppa as well as selling raffle tickets and baking.  We sang a few songs and also some of us managed to play our musical instruments like saxophone, clarinet, piano and violins to name but a few.

Yesterday we had our textile bank emptied and because we managed to raise so much we decided to donate our earnings to MacMillan Cancer.  We presented Mrs Marion MacPherson of Poppies Garden Centre with a cheque for £100 to pass onto this worthwhile cause. We really enjoyed ourselves this morning taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and hope we helped to raise lots of money for this great charity.

Event Heroes Ensure a Warm Welcome at Dunoon Grammar School

Teaching staff, travelling from across Argyll and Bute, arrived to a warm welcome at Dunoon Grammar School on Friday, 21 September 2012 thanks to a group of S3 DGS pupils.  The pupils from the S3 Administration & IT class had sacrificed a long-lie during their extra day off to ensure the planning day for authority teachers ran smoothly.

The purpose of the day was to allow teachers from each subject area to get together to discuss, plan and organise courses for the new National qualifications.  S3 pupils from DGS are already working on these new qualifications and those from the Administration & IT class put some of their newly acquired event administration skills to good use to help plan, run and review the day.

Harvest at Port Charlotte

We had an amazing day in Port Charlotte Primary School recently when we held a Harvest Lunch for our parents, friends and family.  We had been busy all summer in the garden; growing vegetables like potatoes, turnips, carrots and leeks and had gathered them all in this term.

As part of our Crofting Connections project we also had a go at growing barley, oats, rye and wheat.  It took us ages to mill the wheat and oats to make flour!
We used the flour to bake bread and we also made soup from our vegetables and cheese scones and shortbread.

A&B at the Scottish Learning Festival.

Argyll & Bute Council ran a stand within the ‘Local Authority Village’ at the Scottish Learning Festival last week. The SECC was the venue for the festival which attracts delegates and speakers from the UK and further afield. We met delegates from Estonia, Iceland, France and Holland as well as many many Scottish teaching professionals. On our stand we offered visitors the chance to make an animation using an ipad and full set inc. lighting all borrowed from Kilninver Primary. We also encouraged comments on the theme of the Festival this year which was ‘Creative Learning….Creative Thinking’. Visitors were asked to write on a blue cloud which was then pinned up to decorate the stand. Continue reading A&B at the Scottish Learning Festival.

Campbeltown’s All Weather Pitch Official Opening

A great morning of sporting events started the proceedings at today’s Official Opening of the Aqualibrium All Weather Pitch in Campbeltown.

100 primary school children from all over South Kintyre, Young Sports Leaders, Youth Sports Ambassadors and representatives from Argyll & Bute Council, local sports clubs and organisations, all joined together at the Opening Ceremony.  They were led in a parade by the Kintyre Schools Pipe Band. The children were in T-Shirts coloured to represent the 5 colours of the Olympic rings.  They then release coloured balloons (biodegradable of course!) to mark the opening.  It was a wonderful day and all the children really felt part of it.

Ahoy there me Hearties! Welcome to Pirate School!

Pupils at Carradale Primary had lots of fun taking part in ‘Talk like a pirate day’ …….

We took part in International talk like a pirate day because we are learning about pirates and the sea. We dressed up as pirates and came to pirate school for the day. For our topic we made a pirate ship.  Inside the pirate ship you can make a pirate hat.  You have to measure the persons head.  You can make a pattern with the necklace beads or write a letter to Captain Jack Sparrow.  Last week we went to the beach.  Cameron P2

Skills Ahoy!

Shipmates at Furnace Pirate, sorry, primary school celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Wednesday by learning a whole host of skills with a piratey flavour.

Through a day of cooperative learning activities, children from Primary 2-7 practised a whole host of skills and developed their school values.  Pirate games at the swimming pool were followed by art and craft activities where the children made floatable model ships and an edible treasure island with ‘Boson Bones’ (Miss Miller).  First Mate Mrs Baird helped shipmates ‘mash up’ a shanty with a rap (“When I say Yo, You say Ho!”) and Master-at-arms Mr Young challenged crews to show of their knowledge of angles and direction along with problem solving skills in a treasure hunt.

Vote for our scarecrow!

This week Lismore Primary School are taking part in the island’s first Scarecrow Competition.  The children began by drawing some designs and suggesting how a scarecrow might be constructed.  Next, they stuffed old bolier suits with rags and hay before dressing the scarecrows in school uniforms.  Last week, “Miss Strict, with her pupils, Jimmy and Caitlin” were finally finished and put in position close to the roadside.

There are about 20 scarecrows dotted around the island and members of the public are being asked to vote for their favourite one before Saturday 22nd September.  There are photographs of all the scarecrows on our community website so why not go onto isleoflismore.com and click on “Recent Updates” to vote?

Animal Antics

Primary 1 pupils at Lochnell have been finding out more about how to care for pets.  As well as visits from kittens, a terrapin and some day old chicks with a mother hen they were treated to some snake handling and a visit from Barney, the new pup who we all decided looked exactly like Floppy from the stories we’ve been reading in school.

Next in store are our investigations of animals who can help us ….. with a guide dog and a horse poised to enter the playground.
