Harvest at Port Charlotte

We had an amazing day in Port Charlotte Primary School recently when we held a Harvest Lunch for our parents, friends and family.  We had been busy all summer in the garden; growing vegetables like potatoes, turnips, carrots and leeks and had gathered them all in this term.

As part of our Crofting Connections project we also had a go at growing barley, oats, rye and wheat.  It took us ages to mill the wheat and oats to make flour!
We used the flour to bake bread and we also made soup from our vegetables and cheese scones and shortbread.

Lots of our family and friends came to the school; we served them a delicious lunch and also entertained them with a drama about plant lifecycles, an interactive games show about plants, an informative talk about photosynthesis and an enthusiastic rendition of our ‘Photosynthesis Song’.  The grown-ups really enjoyed singing along with the karaoke version too!

We’d like to thank Mrs MacTaggart for all her help with the cooking and the gardening, also Mrs McPherson, Mrs Glover and Mrs Edwards for their help in the garden, and also Mr and Mrs Mackie and Mrs Clyne for their help on the day.

  1. My goodness! What an ambitious project – you really are self-sufficient. I’m sure all of your efforts were greatly appreciated by your local community. Maybe you could set up a Port Charlotte bakery!!

    Very well done!
