Dunoon Grammar School Pupils Go for Gold!

On Wednesday, 12 September 2012, Dunoon Grammar School played host to its very own Olympic Games. The Games were officially opened by a performance from Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band. Then the Games began. Around one hundred pupils took part in the 7 events that were on offer. These events were the 90m, 200m, 800m, Shot Put, Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump.

Originally planned to take place in June, the Games were held in order to raise awareness of the Olympics, their history and their values. It also allowed the competitive edge of the new house system to come out and gave everyone involved a fun filled afternoon.

It contributed to improving the school’s ethos and brought the school, as a whole, together. There were also various non-sporting stalls set up by the many different departments in the school, including cake stalls, face painting and a fruit stall. The day was a huge success, because of the good weather, good organisation and the contribution of hard working pupils, staff and janitors.  After a tough day, Benmore House came out the overall winners.

Mr Wilson, PT of the PE Department said this about the day, “The DGS Olympic Games obviously was an opportunity for our young people to represent their house through the medium of a healthy athletics competition. To me, it was more than this; it was a celebration of teamwork, a demonstration of how brilliant our young people are, whether they were performing, judging, score keeping, spectating or applauding the manner in which they did was a tribute to the ever increasing positive ethos within Dunoon Grammar School.”

Mr Shaw, Head Teacher of DGS, said “The Olympics showed all that is good about DGS. The PE department are to be congratulated for organising such a superb event which involved the whole school. My congratulations also goes out to all the winners and I would like to thank the participants and all those who helped out on the day”

S2 pupil, Elizabeth Stirling, who won several events, said “The Games have taught me that when you want to achieve something you have to push yourself and keep running, until you reach your goal.”
