Good luck to the SAL Team at the SLF!

Pupils from Dunoon Primary and Dunoon Grammar are hosting the Argyll & Bute stand at the SLF today and tomorrow.
The theme of the stand this year is our SAL blog and the pupils spent a day training last week which included demonstrating SAL on iPads and learning techniques for engaging with visitors to the stand. They will all be wearing SAL t-shirts and with their deep knowledge of IT and confidence in presenting, we hope they will have a memorable experience at the SLF.

Raspberry Pi computing @ Dunoon Primary School

Pupils from Dunoon Primary have enjoyed using their I.C.T. skills to learn the basic principles of computer programming using Raspberry Pi.  The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized computer developed in the UK costing around £30.  It runs open source software and can be connected to a computer screen or TV.   It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games.

The Raspberry Pi is designed to be a motivating platform with the goal of making programming straightforward.  Pupils from Primary 5 to Primary 7 have been supported by Argyll and Bute’s, Gary Clark – a real life programmer! –  to explore and use the features of Rasperry Pi. They look forward to showcasing their skills and talents to Education Scotland next week.

If you are interested in game design then a good place to start is with a free application called Kodu. This is a visual programming language and games lab environment which allows students from Second Level upwards to design and build three dimensional games using either a PC or an XBox and XBox controller.  When using an application such as Kodu learners can begin to learn the core concepts of computer science within the context of a project which includes narrative writing, design and maths.  Kodu was developed in the Microsoft Research Labs and is completely free to download and use.

The pupils have worked with various artists and they are even working with pupils in a secondary school in Harrogate, who are designing wooden story boards based on our children’s designs.
