Last session P5 (now current P6), under the excellent guidance and tuition of class teacher Catherine McLean, entered the Scottish Engineer’s Leaders Award organised by STEM in conjunction with Strathclyde University’s Faculty of Engineering. The project was to create an engineering design for the future and with such a wide remit, the creativity of the children exploded onto the page! The children had to submit a drawing of their design along with a written piece to describe it.

Kilchrenan Wins Rolls Royce Award
Kilchrenan Primary has been selected as a Special Merit Award Winner in the Rolls Royce Science Prize. This award, and a prize of £1000 for science teaching and learning, comes as the result of the school’s focus on science in it’s improvement plan and follows the submission of an action plan after a summer school in the National Science Learning Centre in York. Barcaldine Primary School Chinese Day
At Barcaldine Primary School recently the P6/7 children very kindly (with the help of the staff) cooked several Chinese recipes one lovely Friday afternoon. On the day we got to sample prawn crackers and egg fried rice with chicken chow mein, sweet & sour chicken and chicken curry. Everybody got to try it all and there was definitely a difference of opinion as there was no clear winner! Thank you too to Annie who brought in birthday cake so we were all rolled out the school that day!!!
Tobermory High School & Primary School Celebrate 2nd Green Flag
Tobermory High School 3-18 Learning Community are celebrating being awarded their second Eco Schools Green flag. The eco committee worked hard over the last 2 years to minimise waste, improve the school grounds and keep on top of litter across the campus. The Eco Schools assessor was impressed with the collaborative approach the school has adopted to tackling eco topics, working in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust and the Mull and Iona community Trust.

Rotary Young Chef Competition
Well done to S1 pupil Jennifer who was runner up in the District Final of the Rotary Young Chef Competition last week – she will now go on to the Regional final which will be held in March.
8 competitors will take part in the next round made up of 2 competitors from each of the three Rotary Districts in Scotland and 2 competitors from the North East of England. We wish Jennifer the best of luck in the next round.
Dunbeg Primary Arctic Topic
Dunbeg Primary pupils in P2/3 have been learning all about the Arctic. They even sent their very own explorers on an Arctic adventure! Snowy the Seal and Penny the Penguin set off with their scientist friends Finlo (Ruari’s dad) and Kim (Sennen’s dad) who were going to work there for a few weeks. Snowy and Penny got up to all sorts of mischief which included snowmobile rides, exploring ice caves, helping with scientific experiments and meeting huskies and polar bears.
LOCHGILPHEAD JOINT CAMPUS KITCHEN HELPS COUNCIL TO ACHIEVE AWARD
We know how good our school meals are and how much effort the catering staff put into making tasty food which appeals to pupils but also promotes sustainability and healthy eating. It was no surprise therefore that a visit to the kitchen by the Soil Association assessor was instrumental in securing the Bronze Food for Life Catering Mark for the council.

Project Wild Thing!
Stramash Social Enterprise and Oban Phoenix Cinema have joined forces to present a showing of the feature length documentary Project Wild Thing. The award winning film is currently touring the UK. It brings the complex issue of the ways in which our children do (or don’t) interact with the natural world to our attention. The project has gathered significant support throughout the United Kingdom from the RSPB, the National Trust, schools, nurseries and other educational organisations.

Windy Work for Pupils
Whitelees Wind Farm in Ayrshire was the ideal windswept moorland setting to learn about renewable energy for Rhu Primary 6 pupils. The youngsters traveled to the wind farm to take part in a workshop and tour of the wind farm. School Grounds Day at St Joseph’s
Friday 22 November 2013 was a fantastic day at St. Joseph’s in Helensburgh as parents, pupils and staff joined forces to clean up and plant new life in the school grounds. Everyone from Pre-5 children to adults was involved in various activities throughout the morning. The Pre-5 and infant children were involved in sweeping leaves, picking up litter, weeding and planting flowers and trees whilst the eldest of these children (P3) cleaned up the outdoor classroom and got involved in raking and creating hanging baskets.
TEAMWORK MAKES A GREAT GROUNDS DAY
Children, parents, friends, relatives all worked together to improve the grounds of Rosneath Primary School. Many projects were undertaken (including giving our willow dome a “haircut”, building a hedgehog motel, insect hotel and beetle B & B, planting up some wellies and generally giving the grounds a “facelift”! and everybody pitched in – the “before” and “after” showed just how much hard work went in to the day.

Technology Exhibition at Cardross
Last week Cardross Primary hosted a ‘Technology Through The Ages’ Exhibition in association with Glasgow Museums. The exhibition was part of a launch day of our very own Space Adventure 2 game. The game was designed and created by the pupils themselves on the school ipads! Many of the pupils acted as Apple expert, in the evening, presenting and showcasing their work to parents and the local community.
Eco Week at Luss Primary
The pupils at Luss Primary have recently had their Eco Week. During the week the children took part in many activities which all the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. The activities ranged from finding out about beavers, making dams, taking cuttings from plants, having an eco picnic and going into the local woods. One of the activities they did in the woods was to use materials around them such as moss, leaves, grass, etc. to build a home for a mouse that would keep as much heat in as possible.
The Green Man at North Bute
Primary 4/5 have been busy working on a science topic of plants. As part of that topic, we went on Thinking Walks, copying the idea from Charles Darwin. He went on these walks regularly to think about his discoveries. We did this too and collected specimens and pressed them to study them more. On one of our walks, we collected leaves that had fallen from the trees and that were beautiful autumn colours.

Smoke Free Me
On Friday 24th October we went to the Queens Hall to see Smoke Free Me! The actors were fantastic. In the show the characters were called Ziggy with the Ciggy, Willie Tryit and Claire Air. The show was about a time machine and Willie Tryit and Claire Air tried to stop Ziggy from smoking. Ziggy went back in time to meet a tobacco lord and a scientist who talked about the link between lung cancer and cigarettes. We sang songs and a rap! They were called Smoke Free Me, Make Smoking History and Keep it to yourself.
Beautiful Butterflies
Primary four pupils at Colgrain Primary school have had the opportunity to care for and release Painted Lady Butterflies. On the 12th September the tiny caterpillars arrived through the post in a tub full of food. After 2 weeks the caterpillars had formed their chrysalides and were then ready to be transferred into a butterfly garden. On the 30th September an amazing thing happened – the butterflies began to emerge from their chrysalides! Primary four pupils were extremely lucky to see this super transformation. After a few days of admiring the beautiful butterflies and feeding them with homemade nectar and fruits, primary four pupils were very proud to set them free in the school Eco Garden. What an amazing experience and a great addition to our Living Things topic.
ROSNEATH MAKES SOME NEW “FRIENDS”
At Rosneath we were delighted to welcome Alanna from ZooLab for an Animals of the Rainforest Workshop (P3/4) and an Eco Investigators Workshop (P6/7) linked to our Interdisciplinary studies.

Luing Trip to the Falkirk wheel
The first and second level pupils from Luing Primary School had a fabulous trip to the Falkirk Wheel. They experienced going on the Wheel, learned how canals were built and had lots of fun in the play park and water park. My favourite part was on the wheel. We went on a huge canal boat that went extremely slowly. Once we were on the wheel it only took four minutes to go from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. It was so amazing and it was so quiet for its size. On the Union Canal we went through a massive tunnel called the Roughcastle Tunnel. Continue reading Luing Trip to the Falkirk wheel

Four pupils from Dunoon Grammar School recently attended a question and answer session with Dr Vinton G Cerf, an American computer scientist, who is recognised as one of only two “fathers of the Internet” and is currently employed as Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist.
