St Joseph’s was delighted to see the newly decorated memorial tree for former pupil Bridget Sharkey this week. Staff had wanted to prune the tree to keep it looking its best in Bridget’s memory and so approached John Kennedy, a parent of the school and expert gardener for his help. As with many of St. Joseph’s parents, John was delighted to assist and indeed came up with the idea of creating a beautiful border round the tree to focus attention.

‘Dare to be Different’
At the end of August, 19 Park Primary School girls from Primary 6 and 7 attended Dare to be Different at Knockhill Racing Circuit. It was an event organised by Susie Wolf (an ex pupil of Park Primary) to encourage girls into motor racing and to promote the message that gender doesn’t limit your choices. We made a hover craft, experienced go-karting, learned how to do a pit stop, participated in a fitness routine and took part in an interview with Sky Sports and some of us even got on the STV news. It was an amazing day that we will never forget.
Right on Track at Rockfield Primary!
Pupils from Primary 6 and Primary 7 in Rockfield school recently took part in active workshops, which focussed on being safe around trains, train stations and railway tracks. These safety workshops were provided by Scotrail and encouraged the pupils to think about all of the issues surrounding rail safety. The workshops included discussion work and drama activities, which the pupils really enjoyed.

Tighnabruaich Primary School celebrated Roald Dahl Day in style on Tuesday 13th September. We have been learning about Roald Dahl and sharing some of his stories since the beginning of term and were able to take part in lots of fun activities with our parents on Tuesday afternoon. Almost everyone came to school either dressed up as a Roald Dahl character or wearing something yellow (Roald Dahl’s favourite colour). We even had a visit from Mr Twit in the afternoon! Castlehill Primary School – Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraiser
Primary 2/3 and 3/4 held a Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraiser on Friday 23rd September.
P2/3 set their classroom up as a Baker’s Shop and sold delicious home baking while P3/4’s classroom was the cafe where the whole school were served juice and biscuits.

Salen PS Eco-committee Brave the Weather
Despite the wind and rain on Tuesday the Eco-committee managed to start a very important task. Many of the shrubs need pruned so the pupils took the opportunity to take soft wood cuttings and pot them up. If they root successfully the shrubs will eventually be planted out in the school grounds and at the school’s planned pond area. The photos show our blueberry and raspberry cuttings.
STF Modern Apprentice of the Year 2016
Congratulations to Steven Simpson from the Argyll and Bute Council Learning Technologies Team who won the Scottish Training Federation (STF) Modern Apprentice of the Year Award. Steven was presented with this award at this year’s STF conference at Crieff Hydro, hosted by Kaye Adams.
Dalintober P4 visits Beinn Ghuilean
As part of their forest topic, Dalintober Primary 4 visited Beinn Ghuillean. They spoke to Wildlife Ranger Kevin McKillop and beat Ranger Barry Bruce. Both men told the children about their jobs in the forest.
‘Tiree Primary Visits Coll’
Primary 4-7 pupils experienced a very rare and exciting outing to Coll on Wednesday. The Clansman was buzzing with eagerness from members of our whole Tiree community. Once on Coll we found ourselves in an unfamiliar landscape of rugged hills and twisting, turning roads. Mrs MacKechnie impressed us all by manoeuvring the new mini bus past the few not so passable ‘passing places’!
Rhunahaorine One Planet Picnic
On Thursday 22nd September we celebrated our 3rd Eco Schools Green Flag with a One Planet Picnic. All of the food at our picnic was local or sutainably produced. Our Councillor Mrs Anne Horn came to join us along with parents, family and friends. Our oldest and youngest pupils cut the beautiful cake which was made by Hannah O’Hanlon, a community member of our Eco Committee and it has a very appropriate Beach Schools theme!

Pupils and staff are delighted that the school has won this award from Sportscotland for a second time. The award is recognition of our school’s achievements in putting physical education and sport at the heart of the school. We are committed to ensuring that there are opportunities for every pupil to engage in physical education, school sport and ultimately go on to enjoy life long participation in sport and physical activity.

All of the staff and pupils at North Bute Primary had a scrumdiddilyumptious day enjoying the worlds that Roald Dahl has created. We played games, built reading dens, created dream jars, enjoyed story telling and read and listened to Roald Dahl books. What a Phizz-whizzing, wondercrump of a day!

For the past three years, primary, secondary and third sector staff in Helensburgh and Lomond have met together to form a Professional Learning Community (PLC) with the collective aims of:
• understanding the practical, emotional, educational and social challenges children from Armed Forces families face as a result deployment or mobility;
• identifying strategies for supporting children within both teaching and pastoral roles;

Science Shed Opening and School Fair
Excitement was in the air at Lochdonhead Primary on Mull when the official opening took place of the school’s outdoor science laboratory by Michael Russell MSP. The laboratory was created using the £1,000 prize money that the school received as a result of winning last year’s “Our Environment” competition. Argyll and Bute Council’s Policy Lead for Education, Councillor Rory Colville said: “This is a wonderful initiative and the pupils of Lochdonhead Primary School are very worthy winners. Roald Dahl day Celebrations at Kilcreggan Primary School
P4/5 successfully organised a super Roald Dahl Day Celebration for all the pupils. This year Roald Dahl day was very special as we are celebrating 100 years since the birth of this amazing author. P4/5 took on the task of organising the whole day. The class worked in teams- publicity team (proof read posters and put them up around school, photographed the day, will write up the day for publicity), finance team (collected money from classes, deposited it with Mrs Evans), administration team(made class lists, created tickets, named and delivered tickets) and the events team (co-ordinated the day). St Joseph’s P4/3 and the BFG!
P4/3 of St Joseph’s were delighted to attend a private screening of the BFG last week at the local Tower in Helensburgh! A particular treat for any child, but for P4/3 it was a fantastic way of bringing to the big screen their IDL for this term – the BFG! Children were able to walk the distance to the Tower and were so excited to have the opportunity. It was an excellent way to witness excellent community planned partnership and the children are all now ready to further their studies of the book – thanks once again to the personnel of the Tower!
Minard Eco Team’s Harvest Gifts to Neighbours
On Friday 16th September 2016 Minard Eco Team delivered Harvest Gift Bags to the houses which are our nearest neighbours. We managed to fill nine Harvest Bags with produce grown by us from Spring 2016 in our school garden. Our neighbours were delighted to receive the Harvest Gift Bags of carrots, onions, potatoes, leeks and we even managed to make 2 jars of plum jam with the plums from our plum trees. One of our neighbours gave us a bowl of damsons with a note “Thank you so much for your gift and veggies. Antibiotic Awareness Poster Competition
Each year in NHS Highland, we promote European Antibiotic Awareness Day on 18th November. This year the focus is on families and children. To help get the message out, we’d like to ask the children to design a poster (or comic strip for secondary pupils) using the Antibiotic Guardian messages. We are aiming to incorporate the posters in a slide show to be screened in GP practices and hospital departments over the winter time.
